*** UPDATED x3 - Quinn, Ruiz, Sen. Raoul respond *** Rauner bemoans “nightmare” of not having an attorney general who is “working for taxpayers and our administration”

Posted in:

* Gov. Rauner told the Tribune editorial board today that he was excited to have “personally recruited” Erika Harold into the attorney general’s race because retiring incumbent AG Lisa Madigan, who was “loyal to her father”

She and I together will transform this state. Having an attorney general who’s not actually undermining me every day, just working for her dad, blocking our initiatives, never defending our administration when we’re taking strong, tough actions. It’s been a nightmare for me not to have an attorney who is working for taxpayers and our administration.

*** UPDATE 1 *** From the Kwame Raoul campaign…

Bruce Rauner already bought one constitutional office and it’s clearer than ever that Illinoisans can’t afford to let him buy another.

We’ve seen this horror movie before. Bruce Rauner and his Comptroller “shook up” Springfield with a 793-day-long budget crisis which led to multiple credit downgrades, the erosion of the state’s safety net and a record bill backlog. Now Bruce Rauner wants a taxpayer-funded legal department to help promote his anti-worker Turnaround Agenda and guard his administration in secrecy.

Illinoisans deserve an Attorney General who will stand up for them AND win on their behalf. Kwame Raoul is the only candidate who has stood toe to toe with Bruce Rauner’s anti-worker agenda and won.

*** UPDATE 2 *** Jesse Ruiz…

Governor Rauner today whined to the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board that Attorney General’s Lisa Madigan’s refusal to do his bidding has been a “nightmare.” Rauner complained about how difficult it is for him to have to deal with an Attorney General who insists on upholding the law and protecting the rights of the people of Illinois.

Rauner’s comments were eerily similar to President Trump’s recently reported complaints about the apparent unwillingness of the “Trump Justice Department” to blindly follow every whim of the White House.

Although he took a solemn oath to uphold the Constitution, Rauner clearly fails to understand that the Attorney General is accountable to the people and the Constitution. We need a forceful, independent-minded advocate in the Attorney General’s office - not Bruce Rauner’s hand-picked political stooge.

I am proud of my record of standing up to the powerful. So when I’m elected as Illinois’ next Attorney General, I’ll keep on giving Bruce Rauner nightmares - and I’ll keep on fighting for everyone’s chance to achieve the American Dream.

*** UPDATE 3 *** Former Gov. Pat Quinn…

“The Office of Attorney General must be an independent lawyer for the people of Illinois, not beholden to Bruce Rauner and his ruthless agenda. Attorney General Lisa Madigan has been a strong advocate for Illinois consumers, taxpayers, and workers. Apparently, by doing her job, she’s causing nightmares for Bruce Rauner.”

  2. The Attorney General should be appointed by the Governor. Our system makes no sense. It enables political squabbles to gridlock the state.

Whoever the Governor is, Democrat or Republican, they should be a reliable advocate for the Governor’s positions (who is the Chief Executive).

  9. The one case I can think of where she didn’t defend the administration in court was on whether employees should continue to be paid absent and appropriation.

Whatever your thoughts on the merits, the judge ruling in favor of Rauner and Munger almost certainly prolonged the length of the impasse, which also helped lead to the state being required to pay over a billion dollars in late payment penalties. So who is standing up for taxpayers there?

Another “Rauner Wingman” would be devastating to Illinois.

What Mendoza has done has made Rauner take serious pause, especially when her own Transparancy Act Fire flew through the GA.

Rauner wants people working for him, not questioning him, or considering the Rule of Law to do it.

    Dear Ms. Harold,

    This is about Janus
    This is about public unions
This is about the state workforce.
    This about regulations
    This about taxes
    This is about legislative boundaries
Look at what he could do with an AG
Allow Rauner to literally destroy public unions
And legally allow it to happen
    Wages
    Health Insurance
    Collective Bargaining
An AG could maximize gains from Trumps
    Anti regulation
    Anti taxation
    Pro business owner/investor
    Pro free market administration.
    Legalization of Bannonism
    Death to unions
    Death to the administrative state

Lisa Madigan has never stated that she is MJM’s wingman unlike Munger. It seems that Lisa Madigan believes that she is an independently elected constitutional officer. Unlike Munger.

I guess you are ok with a governor that is a proven liar, pathological even. Which means most people do not take hm seriously when he is complaining (and lying when he complains).

And maybe you could provide evidence that Lisa Madigan has been anything but a competent AG? The governor didn’t have any so I assume you will.

Given your lack of comments on the governors lies regarding his “blind trust” and doing business on the people time, I assume you are ok with lies.

  50. For someone in cash management who talks to vendors looking for payment, a nightmare is a Governor who repeated and proudly claims we don’t need a budget because Illinois has never had a budget, who runs up a billion in late interest penaties and hides billions in unappropriated expenditures from the General assembly and the office of the Comptroller. Now that is a nightmare.

Comment by Al Monday, Jan 29, 18 @ 4:10 pm

  51. Pretty sure Lisa Madigan has been widely respected not just by Illinoisans but by her peers and the judiciary in her time as AG. But yeah, I know it’s hard when you’ve allowed MJM to get so far into your head that you can’t speak coherently… or sleep…or eat. For goodness sakes, the Governor looks terrible and he couldn’t talk his way out of a paper bag today. It became clear today that while Ives may be the “fringe” candidate - his unwillingness to debate her was not as much about staging and narrative as he might have implied but rather it was at least partly about ability to defend and explain oneself. Which he can’t.

Fellow republicans told me to get outside counsel since the AG is bias and will only hurt my standing. Thank goodness I didn’t take their advice. 84. Lisa Madigan is, on a national level, a slightly above average AG. She’s not in the top tier. She’s done an ok job, but former employees have told me that every decision of moderate possible public attention is thoroughly considered from the political level and not just left to the line attorneys and supervisors.

We’ve had far worse; other states have had far better. In criticizing Rauner’s buffoonish comment, AG Madigan shouldn’t be fireweed Asmara a model.

  86. Rauner said that he’s golfed with Madigan. What do you think his golfing costume is like? All I can think of is The Honeymooners when Ralph was learning to golf “ hello ball”

  87. Our governor is an ideologue not a politician. That is his great weakness. Illinois is a Democratic state. To succeed, BR must work as a Republican colleague with elected Democrats, and he did not.
He nearly destroyed the state government as a result. Or is that gkurnment?
