* From the Evanston paper…
[Cook County Commissioner Larry] Suffredin himself noted that he defeated two candidates in his own primary — one 20 years old, the other 30.
“It’s good to see youth entering the party,” Suffredin said, “but it’s good to beat them as well.”
That made me laugh so much. I can just hear Larry saying that with his gentle voice and a smile. Classic.

Another lobbyist by trade who serves his own interests first

Has Larry ever voted against a county tax increase?

Some people posting here can’t enjoy politics at all. Selfish.

Unfortunately Cook County just elected two more kleptocrats to the Board. Our future is not looking good.

Larry has character and integrity. He explained to me his support of the soda tax, while I didn’t agree, his explanation was grounded on facts and evidence. We need more bright, grounded public servants like him.

That was me at 8:40, sorry

Trapped, what was the reason? Cook County should be laser focused on controlling spending.
Comment by Ron Friday, Mar 23, 18 @ 8:54 am
Seriously, has Suffredin ever voted against a tax increase?
Comment by Ron Friday, Mar 23, 18 @ 8:56 am
#sorrynotsorry as the youngsters would say

Ron, why do you torture yourself (and us) by staying in the kleptocrat nirvana of Illinois?
I’m thinking of starting a GoFundMe to get you the one way ticket. Anyone in?

That amused me, because that word was coined in the 1960s, when I was still a youth.

I love Chicago, why should I allow the worst government in the nation destruloy my life?
Comment by Ron Friday, Mar 23, 18 @ 9:30 am
I want Illinois to be a great place for everyone not just pols and public workers.
Comment by Ron Friday, Mar 23, 18 @ 9:31 am
Love me some Suffredin.
With 5 new Commissioners and continuing budget challenges, the Cook County Board needs institutional knowledge and creative thinking now more than ever.

So has Larry ever voted against a county tax increase?

Tax increases are creative?

Cook County lost 20,000 people last year.

Larry is one of the best at his trade and a upstanding guy. Rare combo these days.

What makes him so good?
Comment by Ron Friday, Mar 23, 18 @ 9:47 am
Larry is a very nice guy.
Comment by Amalia Friday, Mar 23, 18 @ 9:48 am
I’m sure he is nice. But what makes him so good as a county board member?
Comment by Ron Friday, Mar 23, 18 @ 9:51 am
He is a peach of a guy, but what makes him a good commissioner? Tax Increase after Tax Increase isn’t my definition of a good county commissioner. What he is excellent at, is getting the Trib Editorial Board to constantly give him a free pass over his pro tax increase voting record. They hammer other commissioners on any tax increase yet justify his.
Comment by Board Watcher Friday, Mar 23, 18 @ 10:12 am
That made me guffaw. That sounds just like something my jokester of a dad would say. He sounds like a very relatable guy & that goes a long way to getting votes…whether you agree with his policies or not.
It’s politics, not civics.

Public Servant and others, I know just the fellow who may provide Ron a place to land in Arizona. Certainly a kindred spirit and fellow deep thinker.
Comment by Arthur Andersen Friday, Mar 23, 18 @ 10:59 am
There is empirical data to support a direct link between the adverse effects of sugar and hundreds of millions of dollars in medical costs to the county. Similar to the impact of tabbaco use. While I didn’t think the way the tax was implemented was anything other than Toni Preckwinkle thoughtlessly imposing
her will, he had legimate reasons. Curiously, two of the commissioners that led the fight to repeal the tax, Boykin and Fritchey, were targeted and defeated. While I disagreed with Larry on his soda tax position, I respected his thoughtful and principled position.
Comment by Trapped in the ‘burbs Friday, Mar 23, 18 @ 11:42 am
Why not reduce the sales tax and to offset the soda tax then? I’m all for that.
