The League of Women Voters takes action on an issue or advocates for a cause when there is an existing League position that supports the issue or speaks to the cause.
Positions result from a process of study. Any given study, whether it be National, State, or Local, is thorough in its pursuit of facts and details. As the study progresses, a continuing discussion of pros and cons of each situation occurs. Prior to the results of the study being presented to the general membership, study committee members fashion consensus questions that are then addressed by the membership.
Additional discussion, pro and con, takes place as members (not part of the study committee) learn the scope of the study. After the members reach consensus, the board forms positions based on that consensus.
It is the consensus statement — the statement resulting from the consensus questions — that becomes a position. Firm action or advocacy can then be taken on the particular issue addressed by the position. Without a position, action/advocacy cannot be taken.

*** UPDATE *** Pritzker campaign…
Today, Bruce Rauner said “we need to move expeditiously” to take “strong action” on gun violence, but so far he’s vetoed or ignored any concrete solution passed by the legislature and only proposed a task force.
Rauner vetoed the Gun Dealer Licensing Bill a week before his heated primary election, and the fate of three other bills passed by the legislature remain unknown as Rauner takes his time to make up his mind.
“While gun violence ravages our communities, Bruce Rauner is talking out of both sides of his mouth and dragging his feet on critical bills passed by the legislature,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “Unlike Bruce Rauner, when JB Pritzker is governor he will treat gun violence like a public health epidemic and take strong action to keep our communities safe.”

These groups are trying to motivate the base to stay active. The same as the group’s who oppose firearm ownership motivate theirs. Of course you don’t have to look intimidating to lobby legislation so the stature and sex of the lobbyist group is irrelevant.

The members of the ISRA know all about the domino theory. First it is the meeting at the library and then its lobbying legislation and then who knows what bad thing, for the ISRA, will happen next.

I am an ISRA member who has some reservations about confronting organizing meetings of proponents of gun control at non- legislative meetings. But I do have to say many gun owners get more than a little upset at picket sings reading NRA Stop Killing Our Kids, or NRA how many kids have you killed today appearing across the country. So now we have entered an escalating situation heading towards a breakdown of civil discussion relating to the second amendment. It is not a good situation at all. Rich’s post further inflames the situation, but it will drive up the hits on this site I suspect.

More than a little, huh? Hard time controlling the emotions. About signs. That’s just swell.
I’m pretty sure there is an amendment before the Second Amendment. I think it’s called the First.
And as I’m sure you know from your research, there are all kinds of lawful limitations that can be placed on guns that fall within the parameters of Supreme Court rulings on the Second Amendment.

So gun owners should either quit the NRA or if they already are in the NRA get rid of LaPierre and all the rest of the right wing loonies and get back to its NRA roots, you know, teaching gun safety and teaching marksmanship to newbies.

Last Friday I happened to be driving through rural Alabama and I have to tell you, it isn’t just picket signs that are angering gun owners. Stop signs, yield signs, deer crossing, you name it, almost every road sign had holes in it.
What is it about signs? Why do gun owners hate signs?

Rod, once the NRA returns to their previous position of supporting reasonable gun control, I’m sure the signs will stop. But since they have supported things like cop-killer bullets, unlimited magazine size and opposed things like universal background checks (after being for them decades ago), I’m pretty comfortable that those signs are both appropriate and accurate.

First, any shooting resulting in death or injury to someone’s loved one or friend is a tragedy. How do we end this violence? Why is the violence so disproportionate in some neighborhoods and cities? I would guess there are twice the number of guns per person or per household in downstate Illinois, but the teenagers and young adults aren’t shooting each other over drug deals, “disrespect,” or gang turf or the wrong color hat in the wrong neighborhood. Too many “get-my-face-on-tv politicians run to the bright lights of the television news crews and clamor for more gun control and now gun dealer control. Maybe they should be talking about self-control, but they don’t have the courage to stand up and do that.

A handful of civically minded women want to use their First Amendment rights to advocate for their beliefs and that’s an attack on you and your rights?
Just stop it. They’re exercising their right to advocate for their position. Courts have held that the Second Amendment is not an absolute license to own any arm you want and they’re not asking to do repeal it.
