* Kinda dramatic, but whatevs…
A federal judge set a hearing for the case of @McCann_Sam vs @Bill_Brady for next Friday. Today, McCann files a sworn affidavit that says without "taxpayer funded resources," he can "no longer effectively perform my duties as the Senator serving the 50th district." pic.twitter.com/JfVyasV88e
— Mark Maxwell (@WCIA3Mark) May 4, 2018
The judge had earlier refused McCann’s request that the Senate Republicans be ordered to immediately restore his access to resources.
* Good point…
McCann's conundrum here is that if/when a judge denies his request to be restored access to bill analysis and communications staff, he will be on record saying he's not able to do his job effectively, opening the door for Senate GOP to demand his resignation. https://t.co/yeJ4BtiWms
— Mark Maxwell (@WCIA3Mark) May 4, 2018
* If he loses this case, he has indeed admitted on the record that he can’t do his job. That might open the possibility of caucusing with the Democrats…
Interesting twist: two ranking @ILSenDems say they would welcome McCann into their caucus with open arms. No indication from McCann if he would try to go that route, or if Sen President Cullerton would allow it. https://t.co/2goj7XROXv

I’ve asked the SDems for comment.
…Adding… John Patterson said he’s not aware of McCann even wanting to caucus with the Dems.
* Also, remember yesterday when we talked about how McCann had called WCIA TV’s Mark Maxwell a “yellow journalist” and all sorts of other names?
Well, that wasn’t the first time he’s done that. WCIA’s former Statehouse guy Matt Porter interviewed him in March of 2016…
PORTER: The thing… that got a little bit of notoriety is that there were some campaign finance issues, there was a board [of elections] meeting on Monday, and there’s going to be a public hearing about the mileage reimbursements being unclear. There was a significant amount, $38,000, and also some expenditures that could’ve been more detailed, about $46,000 there. Do you have any regrets about how your campaign finance worked out the past year and that that became a weak point for you?
McCANN: You know, I think really what’s terrible is that you’ve brought me here to the Statehouse to interview me today and you’ve decided to go into this yellow journalism.
He then claimed he was owed “far more” than he’s taken in reimbursement, and then he threw out the “yellow journalism” epithet again.
Porter kept his cool throughout.
Sam may not be so lucky the next time he pulls that stunt.
*** UPDATE *** Dave Dahl at WTAX radio got the treatment on April 19th when he asked McCann a question…
“Did they send you over here, are you working for them, Dave?

If the Dems take him, it would play into Rauner’s claim that his third party candidacy is a JB plant. I suppose the Senate Dems can give him their bill analysis and let him borrow their photographer without formally making him a member of the caucus.

If McCann did get to caucus with the Dems and then resigned…which party’s county chairs would appoint a replacement?

“taxpayer funded resources,” Didn’t McCann originally run as a Tea Party candidate, the party of “shut it down”?
Comment by Deadbeat Conservative Friday, May 4, 18 @ 1:05 pm
I just don’t see why he would resign even if he has “gone on the record”. He’s gonna be outta here in a few months regardless of what happens.
The SGOP can do and say and call for whatever they want but he can just fire it right back and say “You guys are the reason I can’t do it effectively.” — Don’t think it changes much of anything in the Govs race either

Dave Dahl is one of the most independent reporters around.

Wouldn’t caucusing with the Sdems seriously diminish his hope to get republican/conservative votes against Rauner?

Many states have nonpartisan committee staff. If that were the case here, Sam might have a legit beef. Here, caucus staff is partisan. (Good). As long as Sam has his office, secretary, basics, office aides pd from his office allotment, it’s fine. He still has LIS, LRB, LRU, COGFA, JCAR.
Doesn’t matter if he left the caucus, or was banished.

Hmm. Like the saying goes, “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean everyone ISN’T out to get you”
It does sound like he has the “yellow journalism” as a handy excuse for anyone who asks him inconvenient questions, though.

That should go over really well with the conservative base he is after.

Re: Dave…
For a guy who is running against someone who allegedly threatened to bury him, McCann seems anxious to get everyone a shovel.

Sam sounds like a truly paranoid man, that needs to seek help. what a clown show this has become.
Comment by Iggy Friday, May 4, 18 @ 1:28 pm
Toucan Sam McCann with another display of his depth of character. Which is rather shallow.
Comment by Saluki Friday, May 4, 18 @ 1:36 pm
Maybe a bigger problem is that we have a structural dependency on the caucus. How can one be an independent in our current system?

–“Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean everyone ISN’T out to get you”–
Especially when you give them reasons to be out to get you.

What did he think was going to happen when he declared himself a third party candidate and standard bearer of the “Conservative Party”?

I clearly recall many of Dave Dahl’s columns for the BSA Champaign Troop 7 newsletter including: “Screwy Stuey Story Kablooie??? Canteen Canard Won’t Hold Water” and “Tenderfoot, Thickskull: Ronny Can’t Read”
Comment by Don Gerard Friday, May 4, 18 @ 1:40 pm
Patterson is as good as they come… akways great to see him.
To Dahl,
McCann needs the conservative voters that don’t trust any news, and also “know” McCann is “one of them”….
Going after the media? C’mon.
I guess being McCann isn’t enough?
Rauner made McCann, and McCann is throwing away voters with both hands that can’t stand Rauner but can stomach McCann.
It’s a shame.
McCann owes Dahl and Maxwell and the collective media better.
Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, May 4, 18 @ 2:04 pm
McCann really missed a trick here. He should have told the judge that Rauner and Brady are involved in a vast conspiracy to “sap and impurify my precious bodily fluids.”
Comment by wordslinger Friday, May 4, 18 @ 2:14 pm
McCann is trying to ape Trump by jumping the journalists. Can’t use “Fake News” (already taken), so he’s using his own brand of low-class in order to rile ‘his base”.

Word, I’m reaching for the paper towels to dry myself off after reading your comment.
Wouldn’t it be great if a legislator could read a bill himself and actually listen to the it’s merits during debate.

Green Eggs and Ham; the Sequel.

I do think that some provision should be made for funding for people who don’t caucus with either major party, but McCann is definitely not the poster boy for it. He’s just a whiner.
