* Rauner campaign…
At an event in McLean County on Tuesday, JB Pritzker was asked if he’d commit to only serving two terms as Governor. He replied curtly with: “Do you really want me to commit to that right here?” (VIDEO)
Pritzker did not make that commitment and later said, “I’m not in favor of term limits generally.” (VIDEO)
80% of Illinoisans support term limits, and Governor Rauner has always said he’ll only serve two terms because he believes public service should be a calling, not a way to make money.
“JB Pritzker doesn’t want term limits for the governor’s office or any other elected official because he’s a corrupt insider looking to become a career politician.” -Will Allison, Rauner campaign spokesman
Sounds like that first clip was a joke. And Pritzker has said before that he doesn’t favor term limits except for legislative leaders. But, still a fun little ding.

We already have term limits. The Governor might find that out for himself in November.
Comment by Demoralized Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 1:15 pm
Why would he commit to being a lame duck?
Comment by Huh? Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 1:17 pm
That is gonna be run a billion times between now and November.
Comment by Saluki Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 1:21 pm
The buyers can term limit anyone.
First, you can’t beat someone with no one.
Second, you make your case and vote your pluses.
Last, you make your case that your candidate is better, and have a candidate that can be seen as that better alternative.
A fair map *could* help, but Madigan besting the GOP House map with a longer game strategy, but I digress…

===That is gonna be run a billion times between now and November.===
Meh.
Rauner is polling at 26% approval.
Rauner needs the start thinking “people don’t like me, I need people to like me too”
Otherwise… Rauner’s failures will sink him as his approval rating shows.
Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 1:25 pm
One response is. I will govern in my first term, then citizens can judge me.
Two terms of Rauner refusing to govern is a terrible future.

===Rauner needs the start thinking “people don’t like me, I need people to like me too”===
This x 1000.
Until Rauner figures out something new and positive to say about himself, no amount of negative campaigning will save him…It will continue wear on voters who are already tired of him.

If he says he favors it for legislative leaders that is good enough for me. The power of leaders who stick around through fear for 20 years is what is so corrupt, not rank-and-file.
Comment by Just Me Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 1:33 pm
We have term limits.
They’re called “elections.”
Now, if we want to talk about open primaries that may, perhaps, encourage more participation in the process, that’s another thing altogether.
Comment by Osborne Smith III Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 1:39 pm
Ask anyone in MI politics about term limits and they’ll tell you it was a good idea in theory, but awful in practice.
Special interests writing bills and telling doe eyed state reps how to get them passed.
Comment by FDB Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 1:58 pm
I keep telling you….
Term limits + Citizens United = super rich control both parties
The 1% wants term limits so only candidates with money will have name recognition.
Term limits will push the country further to the right. The rich already have too much power. We’re getting squeezed.
Comment by 33rd Ward Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 2:00 pm
Term limits shift the power from the politicians who barely have it to the life long lobbyists and staffers who run the bureaucratic essentials of any office. No one really wants term limits. Voters just want term limits for politicians that don’t represent them.
Comment by MG85 Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 2:05 pm
I think term limiting leaders is sensible, given how they can have disparate impacts on people who are not their constituents. Otherwise, agree with those who say that it places too much power in the hands of lobbyists.
Comment by Actual Red Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 2:09 pm
I thought Rauner said he would not run for re-election.
Comment by Barrington Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 2:11 pm
At least he is honest and upfront about it.

Bruce is sittin’ down to have a beer with regular folks — he’s droppin’ his g’s and talkin’ like regular folks– he’s goin’ out bikin’ with regular folks — he’s wearin’ costumes like regular Village People — ain’t that enough?
Comment by IllinoisBoi Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 2:16 pm
I agree with term limits as long as Citizens United is overturned And There is public financing of elections.
The only reason failed Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner wants term limits is because he is obsessed with Mike Madigan.
Comment by Mike Cirrincione Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 2:32 pm
It’s just so funny to read comments that try to establish the existence of term limits in Illinois via elections. How many examples of elected officials who not only stay in office forever and then give their office to a son or daughter do you need to admit that, except for when we send a politician to prison, there are no term limits in Illinois
Comment by NeverPoliticallyCorrect Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 2:55 pm
And Rauner said he would only run for 1 term. Go ahead and believe him if you wanna

I’m 64 years old. When MJM was first elected, I was in high school.
Think about that!!

“JB Pritzker doesn’t want term limits for the governor’s office or any other elected official.” Umm, no. That would be a lie. For about a year JB has said he supports term limits for leaders. But he Bruce, why let that stop you.
Frankly, people strongly favor term limits as a way to get rid of Madigan. But it’s the wrong tool for the job. Term limits for leaders matter. They would prevent another 30 year speaker.
Comment by Anon0091 Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 3:37 pm
Open primaries sound nice but the machines are too invested in knowing who their voters are. They’ll never change that. Priztker will probably win but he should be prepared for the gotcha stuff, I don’t get how he still doesn’t have good answers for some of these questions. He waffled on the Madigan staffer harassment stuff in the primaries.
Comment by Maxfaxington Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 3:57 pm
The voter determines a candidate’s term limit every time he/she votes for that candidate. If the candidates are not doing the right thing by the voters, they will vote them out. If the voters like what the candidate has done in office, that person is voted back in.
Term limits are for one thing only, and that is to get rid of the other party.

Ok, I thought about it. Now what?

If the state would legalize open primaries, a lot more people would vote in the primaries.

Why do you care how long he has been representative if he is not in your district?
Comment by Mama Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 4:42 pm
Because it’s Madigan’s fault I couldn’t get asked to the prom./s

Let’s term limit Bruce Rauner.

We have open primaries.

Illinois doesn’t even have party registration, we have to have open primaries.
Comment by Arsenal Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 7:31 pm
Did he say it in a private meeting with a self affirmed nationalist extremist? Or was the meeting held in a building he was responsible for that has 13 dead veterans?
Rauners week was really bad and it’s still Thursday.
Comment by DuPage Bard Thursday, May 10, 18 @ 11:34 pm
The people in this thread mentioning open primaries are the same people who complain about everything and never vote. IL already HAS open primaries.

That proves that their constituents like them. So what are you saying? That you are so much smarter than these voters?
