New Pritzker online ad gently apologizes for the interruption

* According to Facebook, this ad started running on August 10th. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one quite like it…

Sorry to interrupt you watching your friends’ stories. I’m JB Pritzker. I’m running for governor and I’ll fight to bring jobs to Illinois and grow our economy.

I honestly don’t get the point of this ad. Or what it hopes to accomplish. In other words, why is it taking up space playing on Facebook at all?

Of course, I was also confused a couple weeks ago when I received a text message from “Team JB” that said “Hey Andrea, hope we can count on you in November”. (Spoiler alert: My name is not Andrea or anything remotely close to Andrea.)

There’s a lot of noise. Doing something novel helps cut through the noise. Its not as though this is their entire media strategy. They are adapting to the medium the ad is running on. It is more memorable and makes him more relatable. Those are both good things.

On the flip side, I can’t imagine Rauner pulling off something like this. He would just sound sarcastic.

I like it. It could get to the demographic that really doesn’t watch television (can’t afford cable) and have their attention spans shaped by social media. They like short bursts.

I always thought it would be a good idea to do an ad like this. Seeing it in real life, it wasn’t as good of an idea as I thought it would be. Still cuts through the usual noise though.

Plus, you’re not really “sorry” if you’re doing it.

Probably should limit this to Facebook and not run it on some other, um, adult sites where an “interruption” might be particularly startling and unappreciated.

Its main asset is its brevity. It’s over before it becomes annoying, and it actually communicates a positive message. I don’t know how effective it will be, but it’s a laudable effort.

JB’s ads have mostly been terrible. It started with ads attacking Trump, then the weird interview ads (Facebook or Twitter?) and now this.

Also, when a candidate for office is morbidly obese, best not to show his full stomach. I think he’s going to win, but it will be in spite of his team, not because of them.

Interesting. An unexpected message like this creates a more lasting memory. His handlers are listening to their consulting messaging psychologists. The high end advertising world plays around with this kind of stuff. The media delivery creates a wanted result without need for specific content. A politician’s dream.

What’s with the fat jokes? Presumably you two are operating above a 14 year-old’s level of intelligence, I don’t get it. I expect this stuff from Sue because she’s got nothing else to contribute, but surely you guys can do better. There’s a lot you can bash this guy on (can’t go wrong with a good toilet joke), so why resort to the childish?

The 1st person perspective shown here comes across as someone large approaching someone backing away in fear. I don’t feel like I’m following him in as much as he’s cornering me.

No tort reform, no Work Comp reform, negative business legislation you promise to sign on day one, a pledge to raise taxes along with a caving to increase AFSCME pay by at least 3.5% for a 37.5 work week….yeah, you’ll attract a ton of new business

Yes, these are definitely all items that a dem running in an overwhelmingly blue state should focus on in order to get elected as Governor. Tort reform really drives folks to get out there and vote on election day. JB should fire Ms. Caprara and hire this man immediately

I thought it worked.
But I don’t use the FB, so I’m not really the audience.
But I think “I’m a nice human being” might be part of a reasonably effective defense. With the lead he has, does he need to do more than not be disqualified?

I loved it. He is a billionaire, but with that big pot belly, he sure looks almost blue collar. It is so nice, that it made me notice. It’s effective. As a candidate, I am not enthusiastic about him.

Lester and your mustache, I never said anything about the election, JB will win. I only mentioned with absolutely zero business reform in this state and his track record of doubling down on anti-business legislation, good luck bringing businesses and jobs into this state. Would I ever want his campaign manager’s job? Nope, because only in IL will a candidate for Gov win with a platform to increase taxes, so this election cycle is one and done for Caprara or whomever.
