* The governor’s $1 million donation to the state fair’s foundation yesterday was actually a purchase of the Coliseum’s naming rights…
Asked if the name picked for the Coliseum would be permanent or only last for a set time period, Elizabeth Tomev, spokeswoman for the governor, said “The details of the program will be announced soon.”
Past discussions about naming rights have included the idea that they could be purchased for a period of years. Slayton said in 2017 that preliminary discussions at the time for naming rights for the Coliseum, Grandstand and Exposition Building were in the range of $200,000 to $250,000 a year for five years.
Slayton said Tuesday that there had been discussions with an agriculture association to get to name the building for $1 million for five years, and the offer was sweetened to $1 million for 10 years, but it was passed over.
As for how long the naming rights purchased by the Rauners will last, Slayton said that will be up to the foundation board, which will meet after the State Fair. It would also be up to the board if the name would last forever. He noted the possibility that the name will come from an Illinois school child.
Some legal background is here.
* The Question: Your suggested name for the Coliseum?

Duquoin Colessium, and close the Duquoin State Fair.
Side Note, I like the Duquoin Fair better than the one in Springfield. Just a different atmosphere. Would have loved to been around in the mid 20th century during The Hambletonian. Seeing people from all over the world head to small town Duquoin for the face. Must have been a sight to see.

Generous donation, don’t want to take that away from Rauner. Nor do I want to dump all over people involved with this Fair Foundation. But, click the link for the legal background, story from a year ago about a “draft” legal memo that says Foundation can give away the rights to name a state asset, with the final ok by the Department. Excuse me? Who authorized the give away of a state asset with money going to a foundation?? Most foundations associated with an agency or university are created by passing a law-no law has been passed, signed into law that gives any type of legal rights to a fair foundation. Go ahead and blame Madigan if you want as there have been bills proposed to establish a fair foundation, but none of them have gone anywhere. Again, glad for donation, but this is something that need to be careful about-slippery slip. Remember under Blago when they were going to sell naming rights? Fiasco.

Part of the namin’ rights contest for the school kids, will be that “Rauner” must included in the full proposed name. ( possibly not snark)
