* I’ll be bringing my laptop to the fairgrounds with me, but, I don’t expect to post much of anything this afternoon. The Democrats are having a beer bash at the Bud Tent, so I’m thinking there will be nothing newsworthy. But, one never knows.
Anyway, please be nice to each other and keep it as Illinois-centric as possible. Aretha Franklin’s role in the Blues Brothers movie makes her life and passing on-topic.

NL Central race is getting fun. Don’t think the Cubs can be caught, but Sept baseball is gonna be exciting. Word, looks like you were right on the Brewers and I was wrong. Yikes.

Does anyone think this incident involving Rodney Davis’ campaign staffer will have a meaningful impact on his re-election?

I was excited to see the “JB-Madigan” logo, instead of the Pritzker-Madigan” design.
That’s better. At least show some effort if you’re trolling.

RIP Aretha Franklin
Your voice will be the standard by which all others are judged.

@DarkHorse, right now I would say it will be a good rallying point to get Dem voters out to vote but not much else. If they can convincingly tie it to Davis then independents might be turned off enough to choose Betsy over him, but that might be a hard angle. If they can figure out how exactly Davis’s field director got into the event that might help, Betsy’s campaign said it was ticketed which means Davis’s field director might have bought one to get in.

Rich - I’ve been meaning to ask - have you participated in any of the Celebrity Showmanship events at the Fair these past years? I remember you having done this some years ago.
Comment by illini Thursday, Aug 16, 18 @ 1:05 pm
So, I’ve been walking the grounds at lunch every weekday since the fair started. There’s usually bands playing loud, announcements on the PA system one after the other loud, waves of cool mist drifting through the air.
Today silence. The Apex, Lincoln and Rising Star stages were all silent. The only announcements were from a little girl giving the time. Finally came across a couple playing Appellation music in the Ethnic Village. On the way back there was a couple people playing the Apex stage, but the volume was real low.
If I was the cynical sort, I might think this was planned.

Elvis died on the exact same day 41 years earlier than Aretha.
The king and the Queen of Soul on the same day.

Anyone know status of AFSCME? My understanding is it’s with compliance officer but what does that entail? The governor still says it’s not owed.

RIP Queen of Soul
There was never a stronger advocate for women during her reign.

If Lady Soul had recorded nothing but “Respect” and “Chain of Fools” she’d still have left one hell of a musical legacy.
Jody Rosen called her “the almighty greatest American singer” and I can’t see the lie.

If anyone was on a “mission from God” it was Aretha. Mission accomplished. Angels are being serenaded by her “amazing grace”.

Nah. election day is many days away. and even candidates that have gotten into fights have won their election. this was a 22 year old staffer. File this one under, not news by next week. sorry.

Aretha in the pink houseslippers in Blues Brothers far more appropriate than Brucie’s cowboy shirts!

Speaking of the Blues Brothers - Matt “Guitar” Murphy who played Aretha’s husband in the diner scene passed without fanfare in June. One of many great scenes in that iconic movie.

Anyone else been hearing the “pre-Trump tariff tax sale” advertisements from Illinois car dealerships recently? I’ve heard this from two different central IL car dealerships on the radio recently. Urges buyers to get in now, but before the “trump tariff taxes” go into effect, likely raising car prices by “over $6,000” per vehicle. Makes me wonder who is more trustworthy to Illinoisans, trump or used car dealers?

I have lost track of the times my son, who turns 17 today, has watched the Blues Brothers movie. It is one of his favorites. I love them referring to the nun as “the Penguin” (Kathleen Freeman, another great actress who was born in Chicago)

Just saw an old Aretha performance from Chicago. No frills, just her and a very large band. The best natural singing performance, giving it to people straight.
