* 3:53 pm - Rep. Harry Ostermqn just said he will not be calling Sen Kotowski’s SB1007 until he has the votes.
Gov Blagojevich has called a special sessiob today to take up the bill. The measure would require 71 votes to pass unless the effectice date is changed.
But Osterman pointed out that changing the effective date so that it would require only 60 votes means that it won’t take effect until next June, so there is no need to rush.
Osterman also said that the top priority of the Legislature now should be the budget.

Oh, we’re not going to be fooled by such sound logic, Harry!
Question: Does the same logic apply to the governor’s consideration of scaling-back his health care hopes — delaying effective date in order to make it a simple-majority vote, now that we’re in OT?

PS If the answer is “yes” to that question, it’s another opportunity to quote Harry quoting the governor: “What’s the rush?”

Lord, if even Harry Osterman can figure out that the General Assembly has to focus on passing a state budget, why can’t our Governor realize this simple and obvious fact?

His top priority should be his constituents. I can’t get the guy to return a e-mail these days.

Osterman deserves a lot of credit. In a cesspool of ignorance and self-importance he speaks logic and commonsense. Thanks Harry.
P.S. Rod, you could learn something from Harry.

Rich….dude, you must be tired from the OT sessions! SB1007, vice 1070 as listed in your post.

While I’m sure Rep. Osterman and I differ on the subject of SB 1070, I wholeheartedly agree with his action today. Everything else should be secondary to the budget at the moment.

Osterman for governor!

[…] UPDATE 2: Rich Miller reports Rep. Harry Osterman will not call SB1007 for a vote because he still has neither the 60 votes needed to pass the bill with an effective date change or the 71 required to pass it as is. Maybe if Blagojevich had been working the phones and actively supporting this bill it would have passed before May 31, let alone in Overtime. Blogroll […]

I don’t think I like the concept of needing fewer votes if action is delayed. The votes should depend on the time of the vote, not the time of the implementation.

It’s “an e-mail,” not “a e-mail”
and he probably doesn’t return your e-mails for a reason.

The bottom line is that 1007 is an unenforceable bill that would have zero impact on crime. Some suburban Repubs got duped into voting for a feel-good bill, but that won’t happen again.

I agree that there are more important things to be focusing on right now, like passing a budget.

If SB1007 becomes law, SB16 (Daley Gun Grab) is sure to follow.
