Question of the day

Posted in:

Some legislators have asked that you help come up with a “theme song” for the overtime session.

Bonus: Propose theme songs for each chamber (or even each caucus) and the governor as well.

  18. No, you can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
    You get what you need

  19. Madigan/House: “Busted.” I prefer the Johnny Cash version, but the Ray Charles version would work.

Jones/Senate: “Countin on a Miracle”, Bruce Springsteen

Blago: “I’m Not From Here”, James McMurtry

Comment by Skeeter Thursday, Jul 12, 07 @ 9:38 am

  20. We need a Weird Al approach to this.

Senate: The Dead’s Casey Jones -> Emil Jones
    Sample lyric:
Driving that train, Blago on his brain
Emil Jones you’d better watch your speed
    Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know casinos just crossed my mind

House: Ballad of Gilligans Island -> Ballad of Madigans Island
So this is the tale of the castaways, they’re here for a long, long time,
They’ll have to make a budget up, with Blago it’s an uphill climb.
Madigan and Skip Saviano, will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable, in the tropics with the pest.

    Blago: Heartbreak Hotel
Well, since Mike Madigan left me,
I found it’s overtime in hell.
I’m down at the end of lonely street
    at Heartbreak Hotel.

Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart

You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes,
    Youre paralyzed

cause this is thriller, thriller night
And no ones gonna save you from the beast about strike

  34. This truly proves that any situation can be remedied by Sinatra…It’s like a sadistical musical score from the seventh circle of hell.

    Blago:
“Just what makes that little ol Rod
Think he’ll win and be like God
    Anyone knows that
    Rod can’t
    push a budget roughshod
    But he’s got high hopes
    He’s got high hopes
He’s got high apple pie in the sky hopes”

    Madigan:
    “I won’t dance
    don’t ask me
    I won’t dance
    don’t ask me
    I won’t dance
    Mad-man with you
My head won’t let my heart vote the way you want it to.”

    Jones:
“This ain’t my kind of town
    Springfield ain’t
    My kind of town
    Springfield ain’t
    My kind of people too
Like Forby whom I can royally screw.”

G-Rod - “My Own Prison” by Creed

MJM - “I’ve Got the Power” by Snap

Pres. Jones - “I Walk the Line” By The Man in Black

Of course the lyrics do not really reflect the situations at hand, but the titles can be construed to mean whatever you want.

In addition to the meat of the chorus saying…
“We gotta get out of this place
If it’s the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place”

…the song also begins with the eerily fitting,
” In this dirty old part of the city

    Hmm.

  46. We Can Work It Out Lyrics
    The Beatles

Try to see it my way,
Do I have to keep on talking till I can’t go on?
While you see it your way,
Run the risk of knowing that our love may soon be gone.

    We can work it out,
    We can work it out.

    Think of what you’re saying.
You can get it wrong and still you think that it’s all right.
    Think of what I’m saying,
We can work it out and get it straight, or say good night.

    We can work it out,
    We can work it out.

Life is very short, and there’s no time
For fussing and fighting, my friend.
I have always thought that it’s a crime,
So I will ask you once again.

Try to see it my way,
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong.
While you see it your way
There’s a chance that we might fall apart before too long.

The Who - The Dirty Jobs Lyrics

I am a man who looks after the pigs
    Usually I get along okay.
I am man who reveals all he digs,
Should be more careful what I say.

    I’m getting put down,
    I’m getting pushed round,
    I’m being beaten every day.
    My life’s fading,
    But things are changing,
I’m not gonna sit and weep again.

I am man who drives a local bus
I take miners to work, but the pits all closed today.
It’s easy to see that you are one of us.
Ain’t it funny how we all seem to look the same?

    We’re getting put down [etc.]

    My karma tells me
    You’ve been screwed again.
If you let them do it to you
    You’ve got yourself to blame.
It’s you who feels the pain
    It’s you that feels ashamed.

    I am a young man
    I ain’t done very much,
You men should remember how you used to fight.
Just like a child, I’ve been seeing only dreams,
I’m all mixed up but I know what’s right.

  69. Those songs are WAY too short for this. Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” is more appropriate, because that’s what we’re going to see. And the sonnet Vivaldi wrote for Summer is appropriate:

    (Allegro non molto)
Under a hard Season, fired up by the Sun
Languishes man, languishes the flock and burns the pine
We hear the cuckoo’s voice; then sweet songs of the turtledove and finch are heard.
Soft breezes stir the air… but threatening north wind sweeps them suddenly aside.
The shepherd trembles, fearing violent storms and his fate.

    (Adagio e piano - Presto e forte)
The fear of lightning and fierce thunder
Robs his tired limbs of rest
As gnats and flies buzz furiously around.

    (Presto)
    Alas, his fears were justified
The Heavens thunders and roar and majestically
Cuts the head off the wheat and damages the grain.

Print: The Beatles - Yesterday Lyrics print version

    Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay,
    Oh, I believe in yesterday.

    Suddenly,
I’m not half the man I used to be,
There’s a shadow hanging over me,
    Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

    Why she
Had to go I don’t know, she wouldn’t say.
    I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

    Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
    Oh, I believe in yesterday.

    Why she
Had to go I don’t know, she wouldn’t say.
    I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

    Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,

  72. For the Gov. and those in the Legistature…”Makes Me Wonder” by Maroon 5. Specifically if you change the intention of the song from a romantic break up to a fueding Illinois political system - “I still don’t have a reason, and you don’t have the time…Cause I don’t believe in you anymore…I wonder if it even makes a difference to try!?”

  90. Speaker to Governor:

    “Positively 4th Street” Bob Dylan
    You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
    When I was down
    You just stood there grinning

    You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
    The side that’s winning

You say I let you down
You know it’s not like that
    If you’re so hurt
Why then don’t you show it

You say you lost your faith
But that’s not where it’s at
You had no faith to lose
    And you know it

    I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
    You’re in with

Do you take me for such a fool
    To think I’d make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don’t know to begin with

You see me on the street
    You always act surprised
You say, “How are you?” “Good luck”
    But you don’t mean it

When you know as well as me
    You’d rather see me paralyzed
Why don’t you just come out once
    And scream it

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
    Perhaps I’d rob them

And now I know you’re dissatisfied
With your position and your place
    Don’t you understand
    It’s not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
    I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is
    To see you

  126. Poison Lovers by Steve Earle

I was almost out of here
    Nearly left this time
I saw you in my rear view mirror
And I pulled up on a dime
    But nothin’ ventured, nothin’ lost
You can’t say we didn’t try
That is unless you weigh the cost
    Of every tear we cried

    Chorus:
Why do we do this to each other
I guess we were always poison lovers

If you could look me in the eye
And tell me what you see
Maybe you can tell me why
    I let you torture me
I know that your lips are soft
And they sing the sweetest songs
But I’ve been listenin’ long enough
My heart has turned to stone

    Chorus

    Another time, another place
    Another wind to blame
    Cover every track and trace
I’ll find you just the same
And even if we made our peace
    And went our separate ways
You’d go west and I’d go east
And we’d meet here in this place

  128. for Rod’s proposals… Another one bites the dust… and another ones gone and another ones gone….

Not sure who these lyrics fit best…(Control, Janet Jackson)

And this time I’m gonna do it my way

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do

Are we ready? I am? cause it’s all about control

And I’ve got lots of it

When I was 17, I did what people told me

Did what my father said, and let my mother mold me

    But that was long ago

    Chorus:

I’m in control, never gonna stop

Control, to get what I want

Control, I got to have a lot

Control, now I’m all grown up

First time I fell in love

I didn’t know what hit me

    So young and so naive

I thought it would be easy

But now I know I’ve go to take…

    Repeat chorus

That’s right, I’m on my own,

I’ll call my own shots, thank you

    Bridge:

    Got my own mind

I wanna make my own decisions

When it has to do with my life, my life

I wanna be the one in control

So let me take you by the hand

And lead you on this dance

Cause what I’ve got is because I took a chance

I don’t wanna rule the world

    Just wanna run my life

So make your life a little easier

When you get the chance just take…

    Repeat chorus

Free at last, out here on my own

    Now control this

    That’s right, career moves

I do what’s right for me

    And me wants to groove

    Is that ok?

    Repeat bridge

    Hop to it

I’m in control (and I love it, that’s right)

Control, now I’ve got a lot

Control, now I’m all grown up

I’m in control, I’m in control

Watching the signs along the way,
Talking it over just the “three” of us,
    Working together day to day

  156. For the governor, I offer up a new twist on a Joe Walsh classic — aren’t all Joe Walsh songs clasic?

    Life of Illusion:
Sometimes I can’t help the feeling that I’m living a life of illusion
And hey, how about my GRT
I thought I might get at least one vote for my resolution
    I just can’t help the feeling I’m
    Living a life of illusion.

    Pow, right between my eyes
Madigan cut me up like apple slices
Wow, Papa Tony is going down
I guess I’d better check for listening devices

And the subpeonaes come with no warning
    Fitzgerald loves his little surprises
    Continual crisis

Hey, time for me to waste another taxpayer’s day
    Coming up with empty solutions
That have no meaning, just another hunch
    Based upon jumping conclusions

    Caught up in endless solutions
Backed up against a wall of confusion

    Living a life of illusion

  161. An adaptation of “Fun Fun Fun” by the Beach Boys
Dedicated to the Members of the General Assembly

Well he got a state airplane
And he cruises through the capitol now
Seems he forgot all about the budgeting
Like he told his old lady now
    And with the radio blasting
Goes cruising just as fast as he can now
And he’ll have fun fun fun
‘Til Fitzgerald takes the G-Rod away
(Fun fun fun ’til Fitzgerald takes the G-Rod away)

    Well Springfield can’t stand him
‘Cause he talks and talks and talks like an ace now
(You talk like an ace now you talk like an ace)
He makes the federal government look like its running smooth now
(You look like an ace now you look like an ace)
A lotta guys try to fight him
But he calls them into special session now
(You talk like an ace now you talk like an ace)
And he’ll have fun fun fun
‘Til Fitzgerald takes the G-Rod away
(Fun fun fun ’til Fitzgerald takes the G-Rod away)

    Well you knew all along
That the Feds were gettin’ wise to you now
(Be sure you don’t lie now, be sure you don’t lie)
And since they took your campaign files
You’ve been thinking that your fun is all through now
(Be sure you don’t lie now, be sure you don’t lie)
But you can go along with them
‘Cause we gotta a lot of things to do now
(Be sure you don’t lie now, be sure you don’t lie)

And we’ll have fun fun fun if that Fitzgerald takes the G-Rod away
(Fun fun fun if that Fitzgerald takes the G-Rod away)

And we’ll have fun fun fun if that Fitzgerald takes the G-Rod away
(Fun fun fun if that Fitzgerald takes the G-Rod away)
