RSLC busts the contribution caps for Leader Durkin

Posted in:

* Press release…

The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) today announced the launch of a six-figure digital ad campaign in Illinois House District 82 in support of Republican Leader Jim Durkin. The RSLC has a history of supporting Durkin, along with key Republican candidates in all fifty states. The RSLC’s 2010 REDMAP Project helped flip nearly 1,000 state legislative seats from Democrat to Republican in the past decade, on district boundaries largely drawn by Democrats.

“We want to remind voters in Leader Durkin’s home district that he has kept his promise to stand up for Illinois families against Speaker Madigan’s liberal, tax-and-spend agenda,” said Matt Walter, President of the Republican State Leadership Committee.

They’re starting with a website. Durkin has only token opposition, so this likely isn’t about saving him.

What this is about is Speaker Madigan busting the contribution caps for his own personal committee (Friends of MJM) last month with a $100,001 personal contribution. I asked for clarification, because I assumed if the RSLC is gonna spend “six figures” on Durkin they’ll spend at least $100,001 because a dollar less wouldn’t undo the contribution caps. I was told they will spend at least that amount.

* Madigan has since used his capless committee to raise $300,000 from the Illinois Federation of Teachers and $500,000 from the Laborers Union’s DC headquarters.

So now, contributions to Durkin’s personal committee won’t be capped, either. By the way, Gov. Rauner did this for Durkin two years ago by independently buying radio ads for him.

I really should sell blog ads to people who do this stuff. I’m sure at least one person in Durkin’s district (Durkin) reads the blog. Man, what a racket that would be.

  2. Here comes the big dump ins from Rauner’s buddies- Griffin, Ricketts and others.
I’m sure they don’t trust Shaw and Schneider to use the money correctly and don’t want them to divert it from where Durkin needs it spent. So they’ll give it to Durkin instead, he at least has an organization, that the State apparatus doesn’t.

  3. “Man, what a racket that would be.” Yeah, but then you’d be accused of being a “corrupt insider.”

  4. ===I’m sure they don’t trust Shaw===

    This.

    It bypasses Shaw.

All that talk, Shaw is marginalized at jump street.

Raunerism was never about making peace with conservatives, it’s about running things and telling other to get in line or else.

    Good stuff there. Agree.

  5. ===Yeah, but then you’d be accused of being a “corrupt insider.” ===

    It’s just advertising. lol

  6. ===don’t want them to divert it from where Durkin needs it spent===

Um, no. This is basically just lighting $100,001 on fire. Anybody can do that.

  7. “It’s just advertising. lol”
    Nuance.

  8. Rich - go ahead and sell the blog ads. Capitalism at its best - as long as they never have any editorial control on this valuable site.

And while you are at it, don’t forget about getting some of that RP Lumber money for another Jason Campaign. / Snark

Not the best use of $100,001.00, that’s for sure, lol

  10. You should, Rich - it definitely would be a a lucrative revenue stream…

    I’m not running for office.

  12. While I know a lot people think campaign caps actually are reforms it’s been obvious for awhile it’s nothing but a shell game. I don’t really care since I have always thought the caps were BS. It’s basically only the little guys were are hurt. If you are a middle income person running for office and have a rich friend you are out of luck if the rich person you are running against has the party backing.

  13. CapFax IE ads:
$100,001 for an ad that will run from now and 11/6/18.

    Can I be the middleman?

Comment by SaulGoodman Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 4:39 pm

  14. I am confused. If this was intended to allow big contributions from Uhlien, Ricketts et al., why didn’t they just blow the cap for Durkin?

Comment by TominChicago Tuesday, Sep 11, 18 @ 4:51 pm

  15. Wasn’t talking about the $100,001 being spent on anything of substance.
That’s just the needed opener to allow more money to pile into Durkin’s coffers. Griffin and Ricketts will pay handily to Jim since that door has been opened without going through the party. The party’s inept apparatus with Shaw and Schneider made the wasted $100k necessary to get the bigger payoffs.
If Schneider got that money he’d probably use it on his race. Or at least a sizable chunk. Mark Shaw would spend heavily to keep Helen Miller Walsh.
Griffin and Ricketts could care less about that. They want their own actors in this play.

  16. ===The party’s inept apparatus with Shaw and Schneider made the wasted $100k necessary to get the bigger payoffs===

    Again, no.

Did you read the post? Rauner busted the caps for Durkin in 2016.

  17. But Term Limits Durkie…Don’t be a turkey, resign because term limits.

Regarding advertising: Take the money and let them place ads here. Ads work on the gullible. With a few exceptions, this is the least likely place to find them.

That’s the sanest thing I’ve heard all week.
