*** UPDATED x1 - Pritzker campaign responds *** Rauner to offer up his “vision for the future of Illinois” this afternoon… right after crossing a picket line

Posted in:

* This media advisory was supposed to be for planning purposes only, but I saw two mentions of it in other publications this morning, so here you go…

Governor Rauner will deliver a speech framing the gubernatorial election. The speech will cover lessons learned in the first term, the contrast between Governor Rauner and his opponent, and the governor’s vision for the future of Illinois.

The speech begins at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the Hilton Chicago on South Michigan Ave.

He’s also speaking this morning to the Civic Federation’s board. I’ll try to let you know if he previews his afternoon address.

Anyway, predictions?

…Adding… Sigh…

Bruce Rauner giving his “vision for the future of Illinois” speech at a hotel where @UniteHerelocal1 workers are currently on strike is the most Bruce Rauner thing possible. #twill #ilgov #ChicagoHotelStrike pic.twitter.com/9WuHNui0Ne

— Illinois Working Together (@IllinoisWorking) September 13, 2018

The list of hotels hit by the strike is here.

…Adding… DAGA moved its fall conference to avoid crossing picket lines…

In response to the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) moving its Fall Quarterly Policy Program Conference from the JW Marriott to another location in Chicago to show support for workers, UNITE HERE and UNITE HERE Local 1 applauded the Democratic Attorneys General Association for its commitment to supporting workers.

“We applaud the decision of the Democratic Attorneys General Association to stand by the thousands of hospitality workers in Chicago and move their conference site,” said Karen Kent, President of Unite Here Local 1. “We are proud of our members who are making their voices heard this week in Chicago—and we are proud of the Democratic Attorneys General Association for listening.”

Thousands of Chicago hotel housekeepers, servers, cooks and doormen have stopped working and are on strike for year-round healthcare, workloads that keep them healthy, and wages that keep up with the cost of raising a family. Hotel workers are on strike at 26 downtown convention and boutique hotels. Some of the affected hotels include the Hyatt Regency Chicago, JW Marriott, Sheraton Grand, and Hilton Chicago. Union contracts with UNITE HERE Local 1 expired on August 31, 2018.

I’ve heard they haven’t moved the rooms, however. We’ll see.

…Adding… I’m told he didn’t break any new ground at the Civic Federation this morning. “Rauner’s greatest bits” was one explanation. So, we wait for the afternoon speech.

*** UPDATE *** Pritzker campaign…

With 54 days until election day, Bruce Rauner is desperately trying to reframe his inability to lead after four years of failure.

While nothing can undo his damage done, if Bruce Rauner truly wants to take responsibility for his failures, here are five questions he can answer for voters today:

“Bruce Rauner is a failed governor who has spent four years wreaking havoc on communities across the state, and nothing Rauner says will undo his damage done,” said Pritzker campaign spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “A speech can’t erase four years of failure, a ‘reset’ can’t save a flailing campaign, and the same failed governor can’t convince anyone that another term will be any different than the last.”

  6. This is easy…

Bruce is frustrated too, he’ll say, but his vision is to take steps to reform Illinois, in hopes of a long term budget stalemate that will crush social services more, finally close a state university or two, and ring up greater debt.

Incumbents should already have a blueprint, based on 4 years of accomplishments.

    Think on that….

The fact Rauner is giving this speech underscores Rauner’s failures… as there is no blueprint, there are no accomplishments, and there has never been an honest attempt to make Illinois better by the Rauner Administration.

“I’m frustrated too but taking steps to reform Illinois is more important than a short term budget stalemate.”… that was the first two years.

Overrides and phasing out Rauner has been the last two years.

  14. Rauner’s not just bad at being Governor, he’s also profoundly unlucky at it. Only offering up a “vision of the future” with 55 days left, with no advance work and an entire summer of stumbling messages is bad enough. Crossing a picket line to do it is worse. But doing it while everyone’s distracted by the hurricane and Trump’s conspiracy theories? That’s just snakebit, man.

  17. Other than finding out that union membership (specifically fair share) can be circumvented via free speech, I don’t think Bruce has learned anything.

Comment by Jocko Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:46 am

  18. Illinoisans have paid a high price for his education.
Four years ago busting unions was a cornerstone of Rauner’s campaign. Today he crosses a picket line.
    Obviously he’s learned nothing.

  19. Apparently one lesson learned is that you can send out 4 teeets boasting of luring 10-15 jobs with EDGE tax credits. (See Faber Castell teeets to the right)

  22. “close a university or two”
This might actually make some sense in a state that families are leaving with increasing regularity. Deciding which one(s) to close would be the hard part I guess. The college towns don’t see themselves as anything but college towns.
Northeastern IL is sitting on some primo real estate and could probably fetch a good price.

Comment by CS Blankenship Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 9:57 am

  23. JW Marriott is across the street from my office. Room reservations for attendees? Any word yet if any of them crossed the picket lines last night or today to check in?

    (Sigh)

Why do ya think Rauner wants to, and has tried to do it passively?

    Ugh.

===Room reservations for attendees? Any word yet if any of them crossed the picket lines last night or today to check in?===

    LOL… oh - Louis G Atsaves -

No one… I mean no one… can say your blind loyalty wavers.

  29. To the Pritzker update…

Really solid work… up to here.

===Why haven’t you protected Illinoisans with pre-existing conditions from losing their healthcare coverage to Trump’s attacks?===

    (Sigh)

Four of the five are direct Rauner failures, the inclusion of Trump makes the other 4 look like “Trump bad” type thinking.

    Why go “there”?

The symmetry of Rauner failing by magically inserting Trump.

    October 1st. Add Trump. Stir.

It’s really quality work… why tarnish it with a lazy point to… to Trump?

    Why muddy the retort… today?

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:49 am

  30. I think we’ve seen the preview of this in the Diana commercials (”reform takes time”). He’ll claim that he’s got Madigan and others on their heals and simply needs four more years to finish what he started.

On a related note I saw two back to back “Rauner failed” ads between innings of the Cubs game yesterday. They were short and very much to the point. It really should be the opening and closing line of everything that Pritzker says and does.

Comment by Pundent Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 10:56 am

  31. The response is generally good. It would be even better if they could slam him for crossing a picket line. But they can’t, because the picket lines include their guy’s hotels.

    2014 Candidate Rauner agrees… #Skyhook

Rauner, in the math, would need to get Pritzker 17 points lower in approval/disapproval to be in striking distance as Rauner, even Diana Rauner, has given up making “Bruce” likable.

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 11:00 am

  33. Somehow “Lessons Learned” and GovJunk do not seem to mesh.
Is this the moment when he adios IL and catches to 4 p.m. flight to Rome?

Comment by Annonin' Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 11:08 am

  34. I think the closing of any state universities is going to have to come out of the GA where some compromise is possible.
Chicago State could be closed and its students absorbed into UIC. Probably Governor State and Northeastern too.

Comment by CS Blankenship Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 11:14 am

  35. Louis, I think your designated reader skipped over the part where they’re leaving the Marriott because of the strike.

You realize these events are booked many months in advance? And the strike started last week?

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 11:25 am

  36. CS Blankenship: While I disagree with school closings, at least prior to making multiple concerted efforts to increase attendance, I agree that a Chicago-area college or university is least likely to hurt the local economy or students, who have other local options. When you get to the directionals outside Chicago, the towns would often dry up and blow away without the university, which is often the only driver of economic development, so those should stay unless dire circumstances occur. But we can’t forever support a university operating at half capacity, so they should be making maximum efforts to innovate and recruit right now. That and regular funding from the state, of course.

Comment by Jibba Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 11:38 am

  37. –I’ve heard they haven’t moved the rooms, however. We’ll see.–

IMTS is in town, so there might not be any rooms at the inns, even the ones not on strike.

JB might have to put them up at his Gold Coast and Lake Geneva cribs.

Call dibs on the ones with working toilets.

  42. ===I think the closing of any state universities is going to have to come out of the GA where some compromise is possible.===

What governor wants universities closed on their watch.

Again, why did Rauner try to close universities… passively.

    Why?

Comment by Oswego Willy Thursday, Sep 13, 18 @ 1:05 pm

  43. Trump said today that Democrats inflate the number of Puerto Rico hurricane deaths to make him look bad. Where’s Rauner’s condemnation of Trump? If this year is a Democratic wave election, it’s a response to Trump. It would be political malpractice to not use Trump to attack Rauner.
