Rauner claimed that the impasse deeply affected him. He told the Tribune editorial board that to see how much, they should compare photos of him from four years ago to today.

When you think about the impact of the impasse on our state’s most vulnerable, no amount of professed sadness from Rauner is going to change the fact that people’s lives were devastated.
When you add to the analysis that the impasse was a product of Rauner’s admitted plan to use these people as leverage for his political agenda, that we’re even talking about his feelings is laughable and frankly absurd.

Wait, what does Rauner mopey face yesterday have to do with his suffering during the impasse that ended last year? What a phony.
Rauner is only stressed now because he’s down in polls. If Rauner was up in the polls he’d be quite relaxed and happy, and arrogant.
He was quite happy during the impasse, waging his war against Madigan and unions, AFSCME in particular. He could have decided to work with Democrats and his own party to come up with some reforms. He could have allowed Democrats and Republicans to keep working on reforms and the budget during the grand bargain. He could have returned to the bargaining table with AFSCME, who was practically begging to go back and bargain and not have to take a strike vote.
Hatred of opponents and attacking them drives Bruce Rauner and makes him happy. The sad face we see now is because he is staring at a real chance of losing the election.

Yes he looks older. Less hair. Worse lighting. No make-up, no filtered photoshop, etc. I’m sure he has had stress in this job.
Maybe he shouldn’t have run for re-election. If he cared about the effect on his health.

He’s probably lost some weight and hair, looking at the photos. Don’t know how much of that is stress and how much age. We also don’t know if that stress was due to him losing the “fight” or if he was legitimately worried about the cost of the fight he was embroiling us all in.

A full body shot would be more telling than a headshot. He has lost a lot of weight since he took office and he slim to begin with. Doesn’t make me any more or less sympathetic to him though. He lost some weight and maybe some sleep. Others lost their jobs, their businesses, their abilities to get needed help/education…

There have been numerous studies that concluded lying a lot has a negative affect on one’s health.
So does he look so haggard because of the numerous, ridiculous, easily proven lies he has been throwin’ out there on a regular basis? Or is it because he feels so bad about how the impasse has had such a negative (and in many cases devastating) impact on so many Illinoisians?
I don’t know - I’m no doctor - I guess we can just look at his actions over the past 3 years and form our own opinions.

The second photo is just bad lighting. Whoever did the advance work for that Hilton speech yesterday ought to find another line of work. That was a poor performance all the way around: bad writing, bad delivery, bad stage, bad lighting, bad sound.
If you photographed anyone in that room yesterday, including Louis Atsaves, they would appear dull and colorless. They crossed a picket line for that?

Just thinking a bit on the phrase “disruption that many families experienced.”
1. Passive voice obscures the actor, who was in this case himself who caused the “disruption.” Why not own it, Governor?
2. The use of the word “disruption” which has a fairly mild connotation, at least to me. I think of this broadcast being disrupted to bring you an important announcement. A minor inconvenience. A hiccup in your day. Not in the end that big of a deal. Tell that to someone who lost a child to an overdose, or who had to drop out of college, or who lost their job because they could not get child care, lost their housing, had to go into a nursing home instead of living at home, etc.
3. “many families”. Many is such a vague term. Does not hint at all at the magnitude of the devastation that resulted from the impasse.

The comparison of photos is a joke. But I agree that there has been a physical toll on him and it’s visible. I was in a meeting with him in December and it looked like a two inch gap between his neck and his collar. Even his body language said he was giving up.
But whoever picked out that backdrop yesterday shouldn’t be doing political advance work.

You know what makes me pretty sure Rauner didn’t lose any sleep over the impasse victims?
Yesterday, he described it as a “disruption.”
Know one who truly empathizes would describe the impact on Illinoisans as a “disruption.”
Disruption is when Metra cancels your train.
Rauner forced entire nonprofit organizations to close. Entire communities lost services. Parents had to quit their jobs to care for their children or their own parents. University staff got let go. Students had to look away from Illinois and scramble to other states to earn a college degree.
Job creation fell by 16 percent.
Every household in Illinois was saddled with an added $2500 in unpaid bills.
People died.
Does that sound like “Disruption”?
Me neither.

I think its entirely possible that both scenarios are correct. I mean Diana did say what she said after all and there’s no denying how the position has aged Bruce. To me he looks like a guy who has suddenly realized that he made a $100M investment with no return.

He’s aged. No surprise. And so what. When you instigate a war, even if you win, you take a beating. When you lose, especially in the way he has lost, you look, well, defeated. He found out his cloak of invincibility was a myth. He ran up 10 billion in debt while gutting social services. The well being of people in need clearly took a back seat to his anti-union agenda; an agenda he kept under wraps during the campaign.
Who wants to sip Carmenere and nibble Brie in the same room as Bruce and Diana anymore?
It’s more that he’s lost face rather than that his face has aged.

What did the guy think, that he should easily steamroll his opponents and they should lie down for him? He waged war on people. Workers who live paycheck to paycheck stood up to someone who’s income skyrocketed while he was fighting to make brutal cuts on them. Rauner illegally withheld money from the state’s newest and lowest paid workers by not paying their step increases, while making $279 million.
People did not want to fight Rauner. So many people want to live their lives with as much peace as possible. Who wants to constantly ward off attacks? That’s why people implored him to work together. He brought this on himself. He is most unqualified for this job. He’s better in an unempathetic world of knuckle busting corporate CEO’s.

Dude’s sourpuss and his bad face are from losing his base. Jeanne Ives running all over him. Getting torn up by the media finally on a daily for inaccuracies of his statements. Mike Madigan taking Rauner’s best shots and not going out for the count. Labor, who was fractured when he came in to office, building trades vs State employees and now banding them together in a massive way. The cocktail party set in Winnetka whispering about him behind his back when he and Diana leave a room.
I could go on and on and on.
This was your own making, your own creation, your own fault. You shouldn’t look at the pictures Governor you should look in the mirror.

That was his M.O. in the private sector; he expected to do the same in the publuc sector. Just like he expected to be able to shuffle money around with no restraints or limits or needing someone else’s approval.
