“A spot in the timeline that just reads: ‘Disaster’”

Posted in:

* You’ll recall Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign is running a TV ad featuring a “lifelong Democrat” who is supporting the governor’s reelection. The fact that she’s been a paid consultant to the Rauner campaign and has voted in four GOP primaries over the years is of course not mentioned.

Well, the Pritzker campaign is responding with two new ads. The first one features Tom Hughes, who has worked for several Republicans like Comptroller Loleta Didrickson. He also worked at the Illinois Department of Public Health under both a Republican and a Democratic administration. And he served on Bruce Rauner’s transition team

* Transcript

When I was asked to be on Bruce Rauner’s transition team, I really thought it was an opportunity to advocate for the people, particularly of Downstate Illinois. I wanted to have that impact, but unfortunately I don’t think I did.

Bruce Rauner was determined that it was going to be ‘No budget unless I get exactly what I want,’ not recognizing that that affected so many people in Illinois.

Thirty years from now, I think they’ll be a spot in the timeline that just reads: ‘Disaster.’

I’ve known Tom a long time. He’s currently the executive director of the Illinois Public Health Association. Very respected Springfield guy.

* And here’s the second Pritzker TV ad, which features former Rauner voters and has a somewhat lighter touch

  1. Both of these spots are short and to the point. People really need to never forget how insistent Rauner was in his demands for change. Never compromise to do the “doable”, and make incremental changes. As a result, it is definitely time for him to move on to another of his houses and leave Illinois.

  2. They’re fine.

Where are the Quincy and Sterigenics spots?

  3. I’ve gotten to be too cynical to hear someone’s opinions, based upon their credentials as some kind of expert, so ad 1, is white noise.

But I can identify with the voters in the second ad. I always like to see voters giving their opinions, regardless of the candidate. I believe in common sense and democracy.

    C for first ad.
    A for second ad.

Too bad Pritzker is a tax fraud or I’d have hope.

That “disaster”, timeline begins in 1999 and it looks neverending, in my opinion. Gov. Pugsley doesn’t look much better than current Gov. Lex Luther.

  4. I know the bar is pretty high for TV stations to refuse political ads for being patently false, but isn’t Rauner’s “lifelong Democrat” piece kind of in the ballpark? I mean, she is objectively not a lifelong Democrat. Maybe Pritzker should raise the stakes with some fake Nobel Prize winners.

  5. Tom is respected, but for the Love of Pete Dude, what are you going to do if Rauner somehow pulls this out?

Not sure the Illinois Public Health Association will be getting a lot of meetings with the Rauner folks in the future.

  7. Very good spots. Rauner won in part because voters wanted a competent businessman who can make things happen. Instead the state gets a destructive zealot crippled by hatred and indifference.

“Gov. Pugsley doesn’t look much better than current Gov. Lex Luther”

Pretty close comparison there: unprecedented and purposeful human, fiscal and economic damage in the billions compared with ripping out toilets and getting $300,000 plus in tax refunds.

  9. Tom Hughes is a class act.

Tom Hughes is the type of Republican that understands 60/30 and that a party that grows, governs.

Both ads continue the Rauner failed theme, one with a governing sort, explaing how Rauner failed Illinois, the other are voters, knowing now they got played.

    Good stuff.

I, too, am still waiting on Quincy and Willowbrook….

  10. Is Rauner backing off his ad buys, maybe in a money-saving nod to the inevitable? I’m told he hasn’t been up in the St Louis market for a week or more. Meanwhile, Pritzker is hammering away with double saturation buy of negative spots and some of his original positive intro ads. While Illinois candidates never used to advertise in St Louis due to return on cost, both candidates have been on there for months. October is a strange time to close fat wallets…

-That “disaster”, timeline begins in 1999-

Hit the nail on the head. No one seems to remember that Ryan left office with a $5 billion hole.

  12. JB needs to jump on the Sterigenics mess that Rauner owns by shooting and ad with the people who live in the area. Have those people tell how it affects their community and what Rauner is doing about it.

  13. I’ve been really critical of Rauner and his all or nothing approach; but the ads seem to overlook the fact that both parties were complicit in that budget debacle.
