* Monday press release….

Today, the Rauner campaign is launching a new statewide TV ad titled “Scheme To Defraud.”

Last week, an independent Inspector General report detailed JB Pritzker’s scheme to defraud Illinois taxpayers. After filing fraudulent affidavits to the Cook County Assessor’s office, Pritzker received a $330,000 tax break on his home, forcing Illinois taxpayers to pay the price of his fraudulent behavior. Pritzker’s potential criminal activities have now been referred to the special prosecutions unit of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.

* The spot

* Script

“JB Pritzker engaged in a scheme to defraud taxpayers.”

“A scandal over toilets and taxes.”

“He and his wife used the toilets to defraud Cook County.”

“Ultimately costing the county more that $300,000 in property taxes.”

“A scheme to defraud tax collectors.”

“Did he commit a crime and could he be prosecuted?”

“Could face federal tax fraud charges.”

“You got perjury, you got conspiracy, you got all kinds of federal crimes.”

  1. Rauner’s administration let people die to save face. You don’t get a second chance for that.

  2. They should really focus on how he wants to raise YOUR taxes while he and his wife commit crimes to avoid paying their taxes.

  3. This is a prime example of malpractice in a campaign either flat out ignoring their own oppo, or knowing their oppo and negligently and purposely ignoring it…

    … you get “Scheme to Defraud”. Wow.

    You can run a mediocre campaign and win. Happens often,

    That’s a… “Scheme to Defraud”.

    The ad is a B+… it won’t mske up for Rauner being terribly unlikable and a failure… but it does highlight a lacking by the Pritzker Crew… will this malpractice continue if Pritzker wins.. ignoring glaring things that need fixing?

    It’s a “B+”, the impact will cut into a… 16-22 point lead?

  4. The problem with the ad is that Rauner has spent the last 6 months calling Pritzker corrupt and every other name in the book. This ad is just more of the same.

    Had Rauner not been so hysterical throughout, this new info could have been devastating, but since Rauner has been so over the top for so long, this ad will barely register.

  5. Toilets and fraud don’t compare to Death and cancer denials. The ad won’t do much to change the result of the election.

  6. ==- slow down - Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 9:13 am:==

    Agree. While this is a good ad, what punch does it have that Rauner hasn’t already delivered?

    Comment by Precinct Captain Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 9:19 am

  7. This is a willfully shady edit of news clips, as the news readers’ conditional phrases are cut, making it appear they are reporting established
    facts, rather than allegations from the IG.

    The inclusion of Brady rattling off crimes at the end, giving the impression that he’s also a newsreader and not a Rauner surrogate, is particularly dishonest.

    There’s material in the IG report to make an honest, effective spot. But it seems BTIA(TM) doesn’t think they have time to dink-and-dunk down the field, so they went Hail Mary.

  8. So, splicing news stories together took a week to produce, huh?

    Comment by Canon Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 9:40 am

  9. Honesty in politics went out the window a long tine ago in this state, but with each election it reaches a new low. The ad won’t change a thing in the election, but JB will be forced to deal with it each time there is a tax increase during his administration. It’s just too easy of a question for a reporter to ask.

    Comment by SSL Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 9:43 am

  10. As others have said, the toilet scam is not new to voters. This ad doesn’t really say anything that hasn’t already been said and the polls show voters are choosing Pritzker over Rauner in spite of the toilets.

    Comment by Montrose Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 9:47 am

  11. The ad is a “B.” Not sure if there is sufficient time for the story to be of benefit to Rauner.

    This is a major unforced error by Pritzker that could have been addressed by quietly repaying the $330,000.00 months ago. It looks like greed and arrogance that it was not repaid sooner. This is a penny ante scandal that resonates with people somehow. Recall that Dan Rostenkowski’s lengthy career ended over a postage scandal.

    Comment by Practical Politics Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 9:48 am

  12. This ad reinforces the point that JB and his wife were *personally* involved in both the decision about, and execution of, the toilet removal tax avoidance scheme. That scheme has been examined, explained, reported on, and is beyond dispute. So this ad is not a lie. All voters –from the most sophisticated political junkies to those barely interested in politics (the more casual voters) do get this. They will individually decide how much this character tell about JB does or doesn’t ultimately mean to them and their vote, but they get that it’s an issue to at least consider. Each ad that reinforces this is not a good half-minute for Pritzker. Grade B.

  13. I don’t recall Rauner’s multiple homestead exemptions as a “scheme” to defraud taxpayers…not to mention securing an (undeserved) spot at Payton College Prep HS.

    Always sad to see someone so insecure that they feel the need to preposterously claim that “all” agree with him.

    All voters agree on a tax break scandal, but in the other thread they’ll each come to different conclusions about cancer. OK.

    Actually, I’d say your Concern Trolling “analysis” of and “recommendations” for Mendoza a couple of weeks back was more transparently smarmy than sad. Though, it was sad, too.

    I’ll check the catalog at Northwestern to see if I can find a good course for you. Maybe “Sincere and Logical Discourse.”

  18. Rauner’s ad hits home, as long as you “focus, Amanda”. Clearly JB’s been caught, and could face State and/or Federal charges. The news clips are standard sound-bites, so playing the whole piece won’t change voter’s minds. But ironically, Rauner could find himself sharing cell space for Quincy and Sterigenics, making himself the next convicted Illinois governor.

  19. ===“You got perjury, you got conspiracy, you got all kinds of federal crimes.”===

    That line fits Rauner for claiming he didn’t know Stuart Levine was on his payroll as Levine directed millions of TRS money to Rauner’s investment firm.

    Comment by DuPage Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 11:15 am

  20. If Rauner hadn’t already ran ads about ripping toilets out of that house repeatedly in the months prior to this the ad might be more effective. For many listeners this is just going to be more noise.

  21. Hearing a lot about toilets at the doors recently. Just sayin

    Comment by walker Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 11:45 am

  22. Slow down is exactly right. It’s largely baked in the cake. I hear people complaining about the toilets a fair bit. But they’re also voting for JB because, like Crain’s, they don’t view this as disqualifying.

    Also, why the hell did they sit on this for a week???????

    Comment by Anon0091 Tuesday, Oct 9, 18 @ 12:36 pm

  23. This ad is not going to leave much of a mark. There’s nothing new here — and nobody died from this. But here’s a pet peeve: Cook County didn’t get “$300,000 less” because of this. Cook County gets its whole levy no matter what, and the City of Chicago gets its whole levy no matter what. The issue is who pays what share of the total levy.

    So there are, like, 5.2 million people living in Cook County. Let’s say, for argument’s sake, that 2 million of them pay property taxes. To make the math easy, let’s assume that each of those taxpayers paid an equal share of this additional burden. That means that YOU, the TAXPAYER, wound up paying 15 CENTS MORE ON YOUR PROPERTY TAX BILL BECAUSE OF THIS. THAT’S OUTRAGEOUS.

    That’s why people aren’t going to get up in arms over this. The Sterigenics stuff, the Quincy stuff — these are people’s lives. JB’s toilets are no big deal.

  24. mediocre, but the end was clever.

    And Quincy, too. They just don’t know if a governor is actually responsible for governing.

    That’s objective analysis.
