* Press release…

Today Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza released her second television ad of her re-election campaign: “Champion.” The ad highlights Mendoza’s accomplishments as Comptroller over the past two years featuring editorials and endorsements from around the state.

In their endorsement of Mendoza, the Herald-Whig called Mendoza “a champion for those who couldn’t advocate for themselves.” The State Journal-Register called her an “Agent of change” who “has sought to create a more transparent government” in their endorsement. In September 2017, Mendoza was called “one tough lady” in the Chicago Tribune. And in their endorsement, the News-Gazette wrote “Mendoza has shown herself to be an energetic, thoughtful steward.”

Mendoza loves standing up to big bullies and Politico called her “one of Rauner’s worst nightmares.” She has the strength and determination to keep fighting for the people of Illinois as Comptroller.

  1. There is no doubt in my mind that voters will keep on giving her that chance. What a breath of fresh political air she is.

  2. Susana has a long history of going against the grain. From her work at City Clerk changing the city sticker process, to her vote for school choice under Meeks, she seems to be a true free thinker. Refreshing.

  3. I suspect this will be on its heaviest rotation in Chicago.

  4. A nice couple of intro ads for the mayoral campaign

  5. I’ve been stuck on seeing Mendoza’s ads as serving a dual Comptroller/Mayor run. With Rauner almost certainly on the way out, so who is the “big bully” Mendoza purports to defend us from? Who is the big bully that Rahm, as Mayor, has “taken on?”

  6. The ad is pretty good. My one caveat is that, like JB, Susana is very very good to camera. I get the need for third party validation, but the more VO they have, the more they’re not taking advantage of their best asset. So with that in mind, I give it a B.

  7. Shows her momentum, her cred, super positive and upbeat. It’s good. Hope it can inspire voters who are looking to vote “for” someone and not just “against’ Rauner.

  8. Fixed it for you.
*this claim is in no way meant to represent I ever stood up for or voted against Mike Madigan. All claims and references to bullies are meant specifically towards Bruce Rauner airmotjer bully-like elements outside of the Democrat party.

  9. == so who is the “big bully” Mendoza purports to defend us from?==

This is just me, but when I hear the bully line right now, I hear, “Don’t worry, I can handle the Chair of the Cook County Dems and all the dirty tricks she throws at me.”

Comment by Arsenal Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 10:03 am

  10. A strong, positive, issue based.

  11. Nice ad. “A” She does what she says she will do, and doesn’t back up for anyone. She will be around a long time. JBT would be proud of her.

  12. Good ad. Not as good as soccer ad.

  13. A+ She looks so earnest. refreshingly positive like her soccer ad. Great ad for re-election as Comptroller and, of course, lays a strong foundation for any campaign for mayor that may start shortly.

  14. Great positive ad, refreshing.

Comment by Barrington Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 10:17 am

  15. A reminder that a strong incumbent who’s been successful in office doesn’t need to resort to dog whistles or vulgar stunts.

“This is who I am - if you like that, vote for me.”

    Solid.

  16. Always good to present somebody else singing your praises. A clean, positive ad.

    I’d give it a B+.

  17. What a good ad. Not the best I have ever seen, but very, very solid and positive. If not an outright A, then an A-.

Comment by Mr. Smith Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 10:39 am

  18. Arsenal — you mean the place where there are the most Democratic voters? You shock me, sirrah…

Comment by Soccermom Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 10:47 am

  19. This is a good ad. The only soft spot is where the voice inflection changes from the Voice over voice to hers. Her voice sounds “wee” by comparison to the guy who sounds like the guy from NFL films in this.

Otherwise, a really, really well done ad.

    Comment by A guy Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 10:59 am

  20. What’s not to like? Great, positive spot, with reinforcing quotes from a variety of pubs.

I think someone saying she’ll stand up to bullies resonates particularly well these days in many circles.

Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 11:09 am

  21. I love the “susan toughing it out in the snow” part. She seems authentic and accessible when she talks. Winner.

Comment by NoGifts Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 11:25 am

  22. Probably best that she didn’t have her pal Schock reciprocating for her support of him against the people of the 18th CD.

Comment by Duopoly Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 1:06 pm

  23. Easy A. And she’s definitely not afraid to stand up to any bullies. That is clear.

Comment by Shytown Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 2:23 pm

  24. Solid ad but I hope she doesn’t think she can just jump into the mayor’s race based on this campaign. Not a big fan of Toni but she’s done a nice job (along with Chico) of locking up traditional Mendoza supporters. Getting enough signatures will be tough. But Mendoza so far has the best ads of this election cycle.

  25. == Not a big fan of Toni but she’s done a nice job (along with Chico) of locking up traditional Mendoza supporters.==

Just curious but which Susana supporters would that be? Seems a little early to make such a claim.

Comment by Shytown Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 3:11 pm

  26. It is stylish (solid “A”), but it is quite obvious that Mendoza is using the Comptroller election as a springboard for the mayoralty. I rather doubt her current campaign needed another television ad buy.

I never recalled her being such a heroine while serving in the General Assembly or as the Chicago City Clerk. I guess it is easier to fight Rauner than her fellow Democrats.

Comment by Practical Politics Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 4:19 pm

  27. Not early at all. Look at all the early endorsements Toni is racking up from both individuals and organizations. Trying to clear the field which is smart politics. She’s already pinned down the service unions which have in the past supported Mendoza. Chico got Burke who would have been a source of cash.

Comment by Original Rambler Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 5:49 pm

  28. SEIU Local 1. Not aware of other unions though. A couple of aldermen, county board members and state legislators. As Chair of the Cook County Dems you’d expect a heck of a lot more to have stepped up by now. Burke is too busy trying to save his own hide to raise money for mayoral candidates.

Comment by Shytown Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 9:35 pm

  29. Chico will drop and Burke will back Susana once Susana gets in.
