* Press release…
Today, the Rauner campaign is launching a new statewide TV ad featuring Governor Bruce Rauner and Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti. In the ad, Rauner and Sanguinetti list the major accomplishments of their first term, but note there’s more to do to save our state — which is why they’re asking Illinoisans for their vote.
* The ad…
* Script…
Rauner: To set the record straight, we’re going to have to talk fast.
Sanguinetti: 210,000 new jobs.
Rauner: Cut fees to start a business and expanded the U of I for tech jobs.
Sanguinetti: Job creator endorsements and an award from black business owners.
Rauner: Record school funding, school equity, school choice, and apprenticeships.
Sanguinetti: A national leader on criminal justice reform, mental health services, digitizing government, and future energy jobs.
Rauner: Restored freedom of speech for public employees.
Sanguinetti: Cut Medicaid fraud and vetoed sanctuary laws.
Rauner: Cut taxes for disabled vets and families who adopt.
Sanguinetti: But there is more to do.
Rauner: And we’re asking for your vote to save our state.

“Sanguinetti: But there is more to do.”
Rauner: yes, public and private sector unions still exist in our own backyard. I plan on stopping that once and for all.

So here’s the thing: If somebody said, “Oh my gosh, that’s not Evelyn Sanguinetti! They hired an actress!” — would you know if it was true?
I remember, during the TWO YEARS WITHOUT A STATE BUDGET, my mom was saying that we should just impeach Rauner. And I said, “So you think Evelyn Sanguinetti would be an improvement?” And mom said, “Who’s that?”
(by the way, could somebody check and make sure that’s really Evelyn Sanguinett? I thought she was ordered not to talk…)

“If you say it fast, it sounds like a lot”
I thought Bruce was running with Diana… hey Slip and Sue…
Couple quick “sillies”…
Labor… “Freedom of Speech for State Employees”… so they can “retire with a pension to work for the Illinois Policy Institute…”
They are taunting you Labor… Bruce “won”… Witt pictures on the steps of the Supreme Court… victorious.
“Save Our State From Taxes and Corruption”
(Ron Howard voice): Bruce and Evelyn are the incumbents
It’s a D+… they have nothing, they look ridiculous, they are taunting Labor again…

Govenor Rauner fast talker
Comment by Rabid Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:22 am
It’s actually a very clever ad. It hooks you and makes you listen to it.
To the crew who ideated it and put it together; excellent work.
Comment by A guy Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:23 am
That’s a pretty thin record to run on and that’s with a lot of spin - “restored freedom of speech for public employees.” When you see and hear the list of Rauner’s “accomplishments” it puts the non stop Madigan narrative in context. Unlike any governor in recent history Rauner was gifted with a mandate to govern and unite the state under and he squandered it on ideology.
Comment by Pundent Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:26 am
I liked it better when Paul Wellstone did it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTiW0YCMM0g

===It hooks you and makes you listen to it.===
Do you learn they didn’t do much… the closing argument is “we got nothing done of consequence, so talk fast”?
As closing arguments go, it sealed their fate as failures.
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:26 am
===and vetoed sanctuary laws===
Not all of them, lol.
D+. They didn’t need to talk too quickly to cover this list of “accomplishments.” Heck, many of them are made-up, like “Restored freedom of speech for public employees.” That’s a fun way to spin the Janus decision, don’t you think?
This could be the shortest list of accomplishments by any Governor in my lifetime. And that woman next to him, whoever she is, is right, there is more to do. But Illinois needs a Governor who can actually get a lot accomplished and Rauner proved he isn’t that person.
Thanks for reminding everyone.
Comment by 47th Ward Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:27 am
Bruce’s eyes do all the talking in that ad and they’re saying “no one knows what it’s like to be the sad man - the man who will lose soon”
Comment by Natty_B Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:27 am
It doesn’t seem serious…like they’re just sitting around drinking beer and packing for Italy…finally at peace after losing the big game.
Comment by Moby Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:28 am
Lakeside got to the Wellstone angle first. This ad is too little too late. Why is he still spending money on ads? People do not like him!! Why try going positive with over a week left!! This ad could actually have a negative effect on his campaign. Ad = D.
Comment by anon Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:28 am
This is bad, like as in made in the high school AV Department bad. I think OW is being generous with the D+. There is a reason 30 second bits only hit on 2-3 issues and keep the viewer focused on simple, bold, contrasting letters/colors. Waste of money. #BestTeaminAmerica
Comment by Hermosa Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:28 am
To the ad itself I rate it no better than a C- or a D+. Voters need a reason to feel good about the last four years and optimistic about the next four. There’s just simply not enough to do that.
Comment by Pundent Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:28 am
Watch it with the sound off. The governor blinks literally twice in the entire ad. I am unsettled.

==Watch it with the sound off. The governor blinks literally twice in the entire ad. I am unsettled.==
I watched it with the sound off, but was way more unsettled by Sanguinetti’s facial expressions.
Comment by Arsenal Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:33 am
In a word…weird.
In two words…weirdly ineffective. Closing ads are supposed to evoke some emotion or give undecideds some reason to look past all the noise and vote for the person (Quinn’s “you know me” ad). This cutsey ad does little in terms of evoking emotions or swaying independents. And if he is still trying to mend the wounds of his base…I say it falls flat on that too.
It’s like he’s running an ad for a lower level constitutional office and is simply trying to get his name out there amidst the onslaught of political ads.
Again…weird.

Agreed, Arsenal.
There is really something magic about the ad’s ability to convey both “manic joy” and “hostage situation.”
Comment by lakeside Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:38 am
I really don’t understand why Sanguinetti hasn’t had a more public profile during this campaign. For those that know “the business of politics” she may not a great spokesperson, but for the “typical voter” she’s got great chops…state and local government experience, a woman, a latina, and good public persona. Another missed opportunity for Rauner.
Comment by Anon Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:38 am
The ad’s not half bad but I don’t think people are going to recognize the candidate by Rauner’s side. Folks are used to seeing Diana.
Comment by Dome Gnome Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:38 am
==It’s actually a very clever ad.==
Too clever by half, in fact. Listing off a bunch of vague things is always weaker than focusing on one or two concrete things, and neither messenger really has any credibility left.

Take 32
Director: “Okay, now this time, remember — you want to look HAPPY. Governor, think about how beautiful Tuscany will be in the spring – and this time, try to keep your eyes open. Ms. Sa… Ma’am, let’s bring up your energy just a little bit? Ok?”
(Audible squeaking noise as they painfully adjust their faces into smile positions.)
Rauner: “I now pronounce Illinois…”
Director: “CUT!”
Comment by Soccermom Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:40 am
===Rauner: To set the record straight, we’re going to have to talk fast.===
“To set the record straight, we’re going to have to be vague and misleading” would be a more accurate way to describe it.
Comment by Cubs in '16 Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:40 am
“Restored freedom of speech for public employees?”
Thing is, public employees never lost “freedom of speech”.
All Rauner restored is yet another way to *rip off* public employees.
Comment by Bobby T Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:43 am
“Freedom of Speech for public employees”. Bruce the comedian until the bitter end. Has Illinois ever had such a goof ball Governor? I seriously wonder if Rauner really wanted to be a comedian but Second City wouldn’t let him on the stage, so he went the Governor route to get a captive audience.
Comment by A Jack Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:43 am
Even if all these things were true, it is thin. And sadly, most of this is spin, untrue, or enacted over his opposition.
Comment by Jibba Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:43 am
===I really don’t understand why Sanguinetti hasn’t had a more public profile during this campaign.===
The insurance cost alone for personal injury is Pritzkeresque dollars.
===For those that know “the business of politics” she may not a great spokesperson===
So ya kinda-sorta answered your own question. Plus, there can only be one Diana Rauner and that’s Diana Rauner. Slip and Sue checked boxes, Diana Rauner was the partner.
===but for the “typical voter” she’s got great chops…===
… for what? Before Bruce “found her”, she was looking for a job from Pat Quinn, voting on stop signs on a city council.
===state and local government experience===
“Hey girl, are there any lawyerin’ jobs in the Quinn Administration?”
That was fun.
===a woman, a latina, and good public persona.===
… some like Slip and Sue might say she’s… magical.
===Another missed opportunity for Rauner.===
They dodged lawsuits for personal injury with Evelyn, so did Illinois.
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:44 am
It’s kind of a strange ad. Virtually no one knows who the woman is standing next to Rauner. Maybe it will remind people that he kept her hidden and told her to be quiet for 4 years.
As for their accomplishments, Rauner will leave the state in worse shape than he found it, that is undeniable. His supporters won’t deny it but they will say that it’s mostly Madigan’s fault and that Rauner really tried hard.
Comment by The Dude Abides Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:46 am

The last thing Rauner wants in this race is a battle between the LG candidates.
Comment by Arsenal Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 9:48 am
Pretty weak, considering the problems we have. If Rauner was the bipartisan governor who many for some strange reason thought he would be, he could be touting budgets, property tax freeze, more workers comp reform, paying bills, bipartisanship, etc.

Created a record-long budget impasse.
Ran up the state’s backlog of bills to $16b.

Not that I think any ad could save Rauner at this point, but this is a particularly poor effort. I’ll cut him some slack on stretching the definition of “accomplishment,” but the whole thing is an illustration of just how muddled and undisciplined his whole campaign has been. Certainly he shouldn’t be talking about “sanctuary cities” in his closing argument for the general election.
I rate it a D.

MrJM, had I but world enough and time, I would definitely do a bad lipreading version of this. “Why officer don’t be ridiculous we just found this car with a little note on it saying it was okay to take it if you needed to run errands and so we were going to the nursing home for our volunteer shift we do the night shift because thats when they really the need most help at like 3 am”

Bad ad. People liked you and Diane in 2014, ugly shirt ad. Why switch up now? You’ve done ads with her already that aren’t terrible why switch to a woman no one knows.
JB made his Lt. Gov. part of the team and of the process. She went to events in his stead. She has her own views on policy. She attacked when needed. Your choice has failed to impress or help your campaign. Why bring her out now?

==Restored freedom of speech for public sector employees==
They are really trying to spin union-busting into freedom of speech?
Then why, let’s say, did Rauner’s administration oppose, and lose, public sector employees’ rights to use signs that opposed his illegal bad faith bargaining tactics and impasse?
Which is it? Is he for freedom of speech or speech that he likes?
At the end of the day, any ad that includes this failure of a Governor only hurts down state ticket Republicans.
Grade: F for failure.

Taking credit for accomplishments achieved during an administration that refused to engage in governing is a new twist. As a democrat that was happy to see Pat Quinn go, the Governor has been nothing short of a disappointment. The ad while not terrible does nothing to persuade me that he deserves another four years. I lived it and I paid attention to it.
Comment by Dodger's Blue Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:18 pm
==210,000 new jobs==
Never mind the fact that ‘miserable failure’ Pat Quinn had 241,500 new jobs in the same amount of time.
By their own (generous) count, they accomplished fourteen things in the past 4 years.
Comment by Jocko Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:52 pm
Is this their 14th or 15th stab at a Core Message?
I’ve lost count.
The time to pivot to a positive message was two years ago.
The last two years were spent ranting about how people were fleeing Illinois looking for economic opportunity, one week out you want to convince folks jobs have actually been flowing into our state? Are those folks all salmon swimming against the economic current?
Everything else seems like duct tape to try to patch up some self-inflicted leak in the SS Rauner.
Badmouthed U of I? We mention the tech center.
Enraged public employees? Freedom of speech!
Killed a bunch of veterans? sure, but we cut their taxes!
And so on and so on.
It’s a communications failure.
