Ives makes her case for 2022

Posted in:

* The governor’s political body isn’t even cold yet, but possible 2022 gubernatorial hopeful Todd Ricketts was on yesterday’s Republican Party fly-around. And today, Rep. Jeanne Ives’ spokesperson Kathleen Murphy writes this in National Review

Ives’s candidacy demonstrated that Illinois Republicans gain ground quickly when they engage in ideological confrontation on cultural and economic issues.

Speaker Madigan and his machine may be powerful, but they are wholly unaccustomed to such confrontation from their Republican counterparts. Their ability to handle such an attack has never truly been tested.

ILGOP flacks might brush off the suggestion as “far-right extremism,” but Illinoisans know the difficulties they’re facing. For many, exhausted by the state’s onerous tax burden, lack of opportunity, and moral libertinism, an ILGOP with a strong contrasting vision, adherence to principle, revolutionary instincts, and simple grit would offer reason for optimism.
Comments

There are no guarantees. But as conservative talk-show host Dan Proft puts it, “As long as we’re still here, we might as well fight.”

In Illinois, conservatives have to embrace these challenges for the opportunities they must be. Nationally, the revolt against the big-government “swamp” has been messy. But the ground we now hold is precious. If Illinois offers any lesson to conservatives, it is this: Never Surrender.

  10. I’ve never seen anyone screw up as many races with as much money as Dan Proft. Republicans are screwed if this sorry ineptitude is all we have.

Comment by anonymous Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 10:05 am

  11. Delusional. It’s like they’ve never heard of Jim Edgar and Jim Thompson.

A Republican party that focuses on fiscal conservatism and social moderation could be formidable. Rauner ran and won on that message.

His failure was that he failed to govern as such.

Seriously, the Ives/Proft/IPI/Uihlein/Katrina/Kass kiddie-korps taking over the GOP? Silly, cranky children with gas cans playing with matches.

Madigan wishes he could take credit for that crew and all their good work.

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 10:11 am

  19. Good news if Pritzker wins today.

Ives would be out of elected politics (possibly) for 4 years, and her last record in elected office is Right of where a majority of Illinois voters have gone, less Peter Fitzgerald, defeating the most vulnerable senator in America, Carol Mosley Braun.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 10:11 am

  20. But as conservative talk-show host Dan Proft puts it, “As long as we’re still have money, we might as well spend it.”

    Fixed it;)

  21. Proft, Tillman, Ives will continue to make money hand over fist conning the right wing and Uhlein.

It will be interesting to see how the Ricketts/Baise experiment moves forward.

Assuming Rauner loses and the General Assembly maintains the same DEM/GOP ratio, it appears the battle within the GOP continues to be a battle of attrition and erosion.

The only hope for the GOP is the Progressive movement does the same to the DEMS. UGH!!!

  29. That Ives-Art Jones ticket will sure engage in ideological confrontation on cultural and economic issues.

  30. Ives vs Durbin (or any other dem if he decides to not run)? That works.

Ives vs Pritzker? This works, too.

She has shown she can stand up and fight for the values of freedom and personal responsibility.
The politics of this century can be divided between those that think government should solve personal problems, and everyone else. This trend towards invasive statism has created too much dependence on government and ruins lives in the long run. Ives gets this and has a good voice to lead away from that disaster.

Comment by cdog Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 10:24 am

  31. ILGOP has to worry about an increasingly Trumpist base picking candidates who are completely unelectable in a statewide race.

Comment by Nacho Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 10:26 am

  32. Jeanne, you lost. Against the worst governor in america. Your “base” is a minority of a minority party.

Comment by Langhorne Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 10:30 am

  33. Sounds interesting, but Harold does not want to play second fiddle, even against a business tycoon like Ricketts. She believe she is the main attraction, so I don’t see this working with her being on his ticket. The future of the IL GOP is going to be very interesting.

  37. Republicans can be small tent and irrelevant, or big tent and competitive. This is true on both the state and National levels. Imagine if we had President Kasich and Governor Dillard.

    We have chosen badly.

Comment by Last Bull Moose Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 10:45 am

  38. @Bull Moose Indeed, if Dillard had won that Primary he likely would be favored to win a second term tonight. Instead the GOP put forward an unknown with no experience, deep pockets and an agenda not acceptable to the majority of folks who call Illinois their home.

Comment by The Dude Abides Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 10:52 am

  39. Ives: Bear with me here, but what if I tailor my entire campaign to appeal to minority bloc of the state’s voters as opposed to a majority of them in a first-past-the-post election format? She’s absolutely brilliant. /s

Comment by Cream of Wheaton Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:15 am

  43. Here is what Republicans need to understand. As an independent, I did not cast 1 single republican vote today. I can not support their agenda. They have totally lost touch with with any sense of obligation to the middle class.

Comment by Generic Drone Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:17 am

  44. Ives vs Durbin would be awesome.

I would love to hear Durbin defend the looming Pentagon audit findings, predicted to contain “unpleasant findings,” since he has either been the ranking member or chair of the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcomittee.

I doubt Miller will post this comment though…

Comment by cdog Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 11:20 am

  45. Ya Generic, the tax cut that put more money in your pocket and that unemployment rate and the fact you hardly hear about ISIS and the GDP mean nothing to the middle class.

    Good Grief

Because the Ranking Democrat and/or Chair controls an Administration’s Pentagon. OK. Just say “Because Madigan” - it’s easier and about as salient.

Pick-a-name - I assume based on this comment you don’t have a mortgage or pay property taxes? Or, if you do, talk to me about that “tax cut” after you file your taxes in the spring.

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:03 pm

  50. By 2022 there might not be too many Republicans left in Illinois.

Comment by Steve Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:05 pm

  51. ===and the fact you hardly hear about ISIS ===

They’re in the caravan, or so POTUS has repeatedly told us.

What I do hear a lot about is white nationalist terrorists who sent bombs to prominent Democrats, killed 11 Jewish people in a synagogue, and racially-motivated killing in a Kroger in Kentucky. And that was just in the last two weeks.

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:06 pm

  52. –Ya Generic, the tax cut that put more money in your pocket…–

Remind me of that after I fill out my Schedule A next year.

And what do you “fiscal conservatives” call doubling the federal deficit in a growth economy? Bozo Keynesian? Drunken Sailorism?

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:11 pm

  53. If there’s any combination of Ricketts, Ives and Harold in 2022, people who work for a living better not tear down the barricades after today; they best be reinforced.

    Comment by Stumpy's bunker Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:16 pm

  54. @pick a name.

Nah, I’m just smart enough to realize a back loaded scam when I see one like the republican tax plan. All they did was give more tax breaks for the wealthy in the ling run while trying to steal from SS to pay for it. Ya. Republicans really lookin out for middle class. You keep beliving that. By the way, I used to be a registered republican.

Comment by Generic Drone Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:23 pm

That is a shot at the LGBTQ movement and the recognition they now have in Illinois. Pretty sad on the NAt Review.

Comment by JS Mill Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:38 pm

  57. ==Moral libertinism?==

What better way to grow a political party? “You’re all a bunch of moral libertines” certainly has a welcoming ring to it. Will definitely lead to millennials lining up around the block outside Ives/Breen rallies.

Comment by Amalia Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 12:59 pm

  61. Ives has NO legislative accomplishments to speak of at all. Will her platform be the same as this past primary? More hatred is surely not the way to win a general election, maybe the GOP primary, but not a general election.

Comment by Honeybadger Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 1:10 pm

  62. Methinks that if Durban resigns/retires… it could be Rep Bustos for the Senate. That would be a tough challenge for Ives. She would need over 20% in Cook Co to have a chance using the Thompson math.

  67. It rests on what the JB and his crew does during the next two years. Illinois is coming apart at the seams. Infrastructure is crumbling, population has not stabilized, government pension systems are in trouble, budgets (IL and Chicago are a joke), and social services are essentially non-existent. If the Dems decide to engage in good government then the Republicans are dead for another decade. But if all they do is raise taxes, bend over to government unions and don’t fix our most egregious problems the Republicans can attack and will get some traction. But not with Ives.

Comment by NeverPoliticallyCorrect Tuesday, Nov 6, 18 @ 2:11 pm

  68. The deficit went from 3% of GDP in 2008 to 10% of GDP in 2009 due to the TARP bank bailouts. It then dropped every year till 2015 when the deficit was 2.4 of the GDP in 2015. It started creeping up again in 2016 to 3.2 % of GDP. So Obama’s net effect was a .2% increase, not double. For comparison 2019 will be 4.7% of the GDP, which is almost Reaganesque.
