With Griffin money and Tribune backing, does Daley still support a progressive income tax?

Posted in:

* On the same day this week, Bill Daley was endorsed by the Chicago Tribune editorial board and received a $1 million campaign check from former Gov. Bruce Rauner’s top contributor Ken Griffin, Illinois’ wealthiest resident.

Those folks ain’t exactly friendly to a progressive state income tax. Just the opposite. Daley supported a progressive income tax during his aborted 2013 campaign for governor, so I wondered whether his new pals had changed his mind and what that could mean if he wins the mayoral race. Public opposition by Chicago’s mayor could greatly complicate Gov. Pritzker’s push to get the question on the ballot and approved by voters, after all.

So, I reached out to Daley’s campaign and received this back…

I support a progressive state income tax, and I am committed to making sure Chicago gets its fair share. Given the size of our budget issues, and the need for reforms, Chicago and state need to consider every option for new revenue, and we need to do it without increasing the burden on those least able to pay.

  1. No surprise there.

  2. The tronc endorsement is some of their best comedy work yet. Really, every paragraph is a barrel of laughs.

Among other things, Daley is a “reformer” who knows “finance.”

Unstated: He’s the white dude most likely to make the runoff.

  3. Daley is appealing to Griffin and the Trib because he is white, male, and wealthy. They go with what they know.

  4. As someone who doesn’t live in Chicago but is right next door and who also is a 7 day a week subscriber to the Trib, this was a nuts decision on their part. I’ve lost what little respect was remaining for their paper.

Rauner with a family history of a Dem…

    Makes some sense.

  6. So the trib editorial board picked Daley because he the white guy who can make the runoff? They not perfect but thats laughable

  7. “Daley is appealing to Griffin and the Trib because he is white, male, and wealthy. They go with what they know.”

And don’t forget that he is “safe”, “acceptable”, “stable”, and a host of other regurgitated code words used to justify support for Daleys through the years.

  9. I will be very interested to see how opinions on the progressive tax change after April when everyone realizes how much their taxes already increased because of the capping of the Salt deduction.

I just don’t see there being much appetite for more new taxes after people got socked this year.

It is the elephant in the room that no one ever talks about, but will play a big role in this debate when people realize how different the world is as far as deductions go come April.

  10. Daley has put out more policy ideas than any other candidate — how to expand economic opportunity beyond the loop south and west into all neighborhoods, $50 million violence prevention plan in the neighborhoods. I think the Tribune endorsed him for his reform ideas and his background at creating jobs.

  11. Maybe Griffin sees the writing on the wall and is looking to influence the form/amount of progressive taxes. While the mayor of Chicago isn’t part of the state legislature (and isn’t governor), he/she has -some- influence and if he/she supported a constitutional restriction on the rates or somesuch, maybe some 1%ers would go along. Deep down they might even realize it’s needed - kinda like how Henry Ford knew workers had to earn enough to afford his cars.

  12. Griffin doesn’t care about anything else than taxes. Daley can say he supports it but when push comes to shove will he do anything to help it along? I’m taking an educated guess and will say no.

If it brings more money to Chicago he wants it, whatever ‘it’ is.

  18. So a white guy shouldn’t be endorsed because he’s white and rich? Anyone seen our current and past Governor lately?

  19. Saw a Willie Wilson spot tonight.

Just him talking into the camera in front of a city background, talking about bringing in a city-owned casino. Keep the money in the city, rather than gamblers going to Indiana.

    And…. cut.

  23. ==So a white guy shouldn’t be endorsed because he’s white and rich?==

The Trib can endorse whoever they want. If the conservative approach is to stay in the past, you can’t find a better symbol for that longing than an older, wealthy, connected, white guy named Daley. He is very clearly a very comfortable fit for the Trib.

In other news, it’s gonna be cold tomorrow, because it’s February in Chicago.
