* Part of the synopsis for Rep. Dave McSweeney’s (R-Barrington Hills) HB348…
Provides that the board of trustees of any township located in McHenry County may submit a proposition to dissolve the township to the township electors or township electors may petition for a referendum to dissolve a township.
* If you listened to some members of the McHenry County Board, you’d think he was the worst person in the world…
District 6 representative Jim Kearns also weighed in.
“Mr. McSweeney doesn’t give a [expletive] about McHenry County. I’m sorry, he doesn’t. … I have to be honest with you. I hate this with a passion. I hate this kind of government. This government that we have in Illinois has bankrupted every single citizen of this state. We are broke. And do we want to bring that to McHenry County with more poor legislation? No, we don’t. … Mr. McSweeney, I’m calling you out. It’s a bunch of garbage what you’ve been doing in Springfield,” Kearns said.
Um, the commissioner hates the sort of government that would allow voters to dissolve a township?
I don’t get it.
…Adding… Ah, now I get it. Kearns is also the Grafton Township Supervisor. Thanks much to a commenter.

=This government that we have in Illinois has bankrupted every single citizen of this state. We are broke.=
I read that and then checked my bank account because he scared me. All good. He is wrong.
He and McSweeney seem to be cut from the same cloth.

According to McHenry County Board website it looks like Commissioner Kearns is also a Township Supervisor. So maybe he’s concerned what his trustees will do if this became law.

In any county where the population reaches 750,000 townships should automatically cease to exists and the their functions should be taken over by the county government

Local government - a concept that has been around for a long time - pure Jacksonianism - let the people decide - whats the problem with that?

=I hate this kind of government”, says Mr. Kearns.
That’s rich. If you truly “hated” any type of government you’d be all for imploding the number of governmental entities we have in this state. What you are really saying is that you love government.

Considering why Township Highway Commissioners get paid relative to the amount of road the township deals with it is kind of ironic he is worried about taxpayers going broke.

I listened to the testimony presented on this bill on Thursday, and I could not believe how rude and unprofessional Rep. McSweeney was to committee members. His arrogance was unbecoming. How does someone like that even get elected? Who refuses to meet with constituents?

We all know this has far more to do with the McMessenger than the McMessage.

It probably felt “good” to say… and then what?
It doesn’t add much to anything, but it probably felt “good”

“I hate this kind of government.”
That is, unless it benefits me, then I love it.

He’s gutting these outposts of Republican patronage and eliminating the GOP farm system. It’s a drag for residents in the few areas where they have competent managers providing services but overall good riddance and thanks Representative.

Another option - in the next township election cycle run a slate of candidates who promise to wind down and dissolve the township, if elected.
Since township candidates are often slated without a primary, it’s an opportunity for Democrats to stoke a blue wave in the collar counties. For the state Dems, encouraging Democratic township slates makes more political sense than passing a voter initiative referendum.

–He and McSweeney seem to be cut from the same cloth.–
It’s rare that you find this sort of elevated, sober dialogue outside a UFC weigh-in presser.

I wonder if the proponents of dissolving townships ever read the Township Code 60 ILCS 1. Counties already have the ability to divide, enlarge, consolidate, and create new townships.
Comment by Huh? Friday, Feb 15, 19 @ 1:57 pm
===Counties already have the ability===
And they don’t do it, ergo the referendum proposal.
Comment by Rich Miller Friday, Feb 15, 19 @ 2:01 pm
This is a reason McSweeney has respect outside the GOP, because he applies Republican principles where most members of his party make a partisan exception, namely on streamlining and shrinking government.
Comment by anon2 Friday, Feb 15, 19 @ 2:24 pm
60 ILCS 1 already provides a mechanism to dissolve township organization. In general, 10% of the voters of a township must petition the county board to put a referendum on the ballot.
If people are so hot to get rid of layers of local government, then read the statutes and get out the door knockers to get petitions signed.

Dissolving wasteful and unnecessary units of local gov’t is a GOOD thing. Next they should reduce the size of the McHenry County Board. Sorry Commissioner/Supervisor Kearns — try the private sector.

Republicans hate government unless they are running it.

How did you determine these units of government are wasteful?
