* Press release…
Lori Lightfoot says she’s running as the change candidate, but the only thing she’s trying to change right now is her record of looking out for powerful interests.
Lightfoot is a wealthy corporate attorney who represented Wall Street banks. During her time as a corporate attorney, she was reprimanded for misconduct after allegations of abuse of power.
Lightfoot defended a Wall Street bank being sued for racial discrimination and Republican politicians trying to protect their power.
Lightfoot, who likes to talk about how she is the “change” candidate, was appointed over and over and over to political appointments by politicians Rahm Emanuel and Richard Daley. Is that change? In those roles, she overruled her own investigators to justify police shootings.
So today, the campaign for Toni Preckwinkle released an ad to tell the truth about Lightfoot’s record. Because the only thing Lori Lightfoot is trying to change is her story.
You just knew something like this was coming soon. Lightfoot has gained serious momentum from her first round win. Preckwinkle has to stop it as soon as she possibly can before the momentum gets out of control.

That’s the whole kitchen sink. We’ll see if it sticks or if Lightfoot can respond, but I think that’s everything Preckwinkle has. Not surprised they are airing it now, but there’s not much there there, so Preckwinkle better hope people buy it.

Nice lie there. She was reprimanded when she worked for the U.S. Attorney’s office, not when she was at Mayer Brown.

I’m not trying to stir the pot or put on a tin foil hat and turn on the X-Files, and full disclosure I do not live in Chicago or have a horse in the race. But I wonder what the response would be if somebody like Bill Daley used this filtered version of Lightfoot with a negative ad as hard hitting as this. The 18 to 24 second footage in particular.
Preckwinkle’s campaign from 2010 to 2019 will be a good case study on the benefits of incumbency and the negatives. She is now part of what she battled against.

Too cluttered IMO. Better to put the one or two strongest hits in a spot and ride that. Also, the racial discrimination allegation doesn’t pass the smell test. And watched with the sound off, the open and close could be Lightfoot positives (just her face and name on screen).

Preckwinkle and her “boy’s” are so one note. And it’s flat. Get a clue kids. It was Martwicks silly bully show that made me vote for Lori Lightfoot.

A lot of long focuses on her face…
I know this is just the first round, but I can see the barrage of negative backfiring on an already unpopular Preckwinkle.

It is a solid ad. Make some points that will have appeal and it is early so it can define Lightfoot.
It is sort of funny that the buddy of Joe Berios who put Burke’s kid on the payroll is running it, but that’s another thing altogether.

Not a good add knowing it come from Prekwinkle, Cook County Democratic Party boss.

Preckwinkle has been in the public spotlight for a long time.
Certainly Lightfoot’s record bears scrutiny. What she has done as a prosecutor and a corporate attorney will likely give us more insight into how she might perform as mayor than her stated positions which, after all, are designed for the sole purpose of garnering votes

” I think that’s everything Preckwinkle has. ”
I don’t.

Team Toni is really, really scared

Not sure this ad doesn’t reassure some uninformed voters that Lightfoot isn’t some anti-business DSA type.

every person I know in Chicago Government is ducking because they know this is going to be a brawl of a campaign. the look of terror on their faces is astounding. it’s not about their jobs necessarily, it’s about the combat that we are all witnessing.

Is this broadcast or online only?
Watch it with the sound off, and it’s not bad. Lightford looks bad (visually) with a list of bad headlines. If this is broadcast and has enough points behind it, it can sink in.
Remember, most Chicago voters stayed home on Tuesday. There’s a lot of votes up for grabs. For voters who said they’d wait until there were just two before they start paying attention, this is a good ad.

Read the headline. I checked.

As always, every candidate has issues. We will see which ones matter.

Your serve, Ms Lightfoot.
Cue the “Soda Tax” ad…

TP has literally never had a non-government job and is criticizing someone for their private sector livelihood. Lawyers take tough matters, that’s what they do.
Does anyone know how many debates they have signed up for? Toni better hope it is a number between zero and zero (and if more than zero, perhaps Martwick shouldn’t do the debate prep).

I’d do an ad pointing out how low income black homeowners got screwed by Toni’s BFF Joe Berrios so rich people could pay less.
The Tribune did all of the hard work. Now it’s just a matter of finding an African American who lost their home because Toni’s not ready for reform.
Game, set, match.

I think I’d chop it up. Lot of info.
“The only thing LL is trying to change is her story” is a very good closer.
Comment by wordslinger Friday, Mar 1, 19 @ 4:10 pm
It’s a turnoff too soon just like her negative acceptance speech. Berrios, Burke, Chicago boss, soda tax, yearly tax increases, cook scandals, what reform no one seems to know? Change in a different form it is a coming. People have had enough and money isn’t available and taxes aren’t deductible it matters..

I think it’s appealing to the “progressive” segments of the voter base.
And that’s what negative AD should do. Target the opponent’s base.
Of course all lawyers take tough cases, especially if the client can afford to pay well.
As a counter I much prefer the Betios/Burke hit to the pop tax hit.

I think Lori’s personal story of being a non-politician with considerable private sector experience is a large part of what got her to the mayoral playoff. So, even with its tonal negativity Toni takes a risk with featuring Lori’s story to voters who are not already very familiar with Lightfoot. In terms of moving Toni herself forward this ad feels like a not particularly notable grade C effort.
