March 14 was just 6 days before the Democratic primary. Everyone knew that Guzzardi’s candidate Sen. Daniel Biss was going down, but the left was still piling on hard. The Internet is forever.

As for the IPI’s tweet today, zzzzzzz. Politicians of the same party attack each-other during primaries. Guzzardi supports progressive taxation with Pritzker today. That’s what counts.

I remember the public polls being closer than the result ended up being, so Guzzardi might have been hoping that Biss could eek out a win with last minute momentum.
Of course, the public polls significantly understated Pritzker’s support (I believe Pritzker’s internal polls were quite accurate though).
And Grandson of Man is right, well-functioning parties can duke it out in the primary then unite behind the winner and work together for common goals should the primary winner get elected

There are multiple ways for Twitter users to delete old tweets.
If you use your government name on Twitter, consider regularly purging your old tweets — if not for the sake of your employment or your political work, do it for your kids.

Sad that the scholars at IPI emerged from their think tanks to discover that politicians often rip their opponents to shreds in primaries then make nice afterwards.
Must have been their first election. Thoughts and prayers for your lost innocence.
(Maybe don’t look back at what Trump’s primary opponents said about him then, and what they say now).

Re-googling the polls, it looks like my memory was half right - the polls had Pritzker with the lead outside the margin of error, but they all had him in the 30s so people thought the undecideds might break against him. However, many of those undecideds voted for Pritzker and he won decisively.

There’s absolutely no inconsistency between Guzzardi’s top tweet and the series that Rich and IPI are citing as somehow hypocritical. One’s about the effect of progressive tax policy, the latter is questioning whether Pritzker is sufficiently committed to progressive tax policy.

Someday, people like Guzzardi may wake up and get the clue that nobody leaves a state simply because of one tax rate (out of many).
Saying CA, NY, etc., have higher rates is really missing the point. People leave because it all piles on - the property taxes, the sales taxes, the transfer taxes, etc.
It piles on, governments never make a real effort to cut or reform, and people don’t trust its ability to do so in the future.

In Illinois it certainly isn’t the rich anti-tax crowd. They’re paying a lower share of SALT than everyone else. They’ve paid low state income taxes for decades.

Pritzker’s fair tax push is a good reform effort, to get more revenue, invest and pay our bills. We don’t want reforms that will turn us into a low-wage state.

Ironically I know some people who move their residence to their summer homes in Indiana not because of Illinois taxes but because Indiana kills you in property taxes if you are not a resident.

The fact is that we are losing population. That’s been the case for a very long time in the Chicago region. But we backfill the losses with immigrants. Future population growth would be a big plus to help mitigate our fiscal problems.

@MrJM - shouldn’t deleting tweets be an even bigger sin for a politician (or journalist)? Instead of a public record, you get to just wipe out everything you said unless some organization like Archive.org records it? If I saw someone doing that I’d feel perfectly justified assuming the worst (conflicts of interest, maybe even racism/sexism).

Downstate counties on the Indiana border actually have the out migration across the State line.
These are folks who do not need to leave their job, and simply sell their house and move to a lower property tax situation a few miles across the border.
Insurance agents and others who deal directly with these folks describe this process as increasingly routine. Certainly a much different dynamic than urban areas, but it is happening.
Some downstate border counties have contemplated working with the neighboring State on attracting new industry and settling for their fair share of the new population to assist the economy. In a kind of “if you can’t beat them, join them” strategy. These are the thinking folks, not the types at the Effingham succession rally.
