It won’t be official until Thursday, but the latest results in the two closest aldermanic races make it a near certainty Ald. James Cappleman (46th) will be proclaimed the winner over Marianne Lalonde, while challenger Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez will be declared the victor over Ald. Deb Mell (33rd).
Although both races remain extremely close, there aren’t enough votes that remain uncounted to reverse the outcome — unless a large batch of ballots mysteriously arrive in Tuesday’s mail two full weeks after the election, which would set off quite the federal investigation.
After Monday’s count, Cappleman stretched his lead over Lalonde to 30 votes — 7,079 to 7,049 — while Rodriguez Sanchez saw her lead over Mell shrink to 13 votes — 5,753 to 5,740.

A new Champaign County judge has been assigned to sort out the details of a request for a recount in the one-vote Macon County sheriff’s race.
Newly installed Sixth Circuit Chief Judge Karle Koritz has assigned Associate Judge Anna Benjamin to hear the case after the attorney for Democratic Sheriff Tony “Chubby” Brown asked that a judge other than Tom Difanis be assigned to the case.
Litigants are entitled to one judge substitution without cause as a matter of right, assuming that no substantive rulings have been made by the assigned judge.
Republican Jim Root had initially filed suit Dec. 19 in Macon County Circuit Court asking for a judge to review the election results in hopes that he might be declared the winner over Brown.

Chris Rothweiler is the apparent winner in the race for Ward 6 alderman in Belleville as he garnered 14 votes by mail. Andrew Gaa received only four votes by mail, according to counts by the St. Clair County Clerk’s office.
That brings Rothweiler’s vote total to 313. Gaa now has 310 votes, according to unofficial totals. After election night, Gaa had a seven-vote lead.

Ironically, it was Dick Mell who was in charge of the Chicago Ward Remap that took effect in 2012. He made the 33rd Ward majority Latino (albeit a slim majority) and that’s a large reason why his daughter lost to a Latina candidate.

The ward is diverse, that’s for sure. In addition to Latinos, there are Koreans, Lebanese, Swedes, Yuppies and African-Americans too. The Ward was re-drawn to be a narrow, north-south patch of the city, along the western edge of the North Branch. I doubt the elder Mell was seeking to make it majority Latino, I think he wanted to move across the river and take some precincts from the 47th Ward.
And Deb tried her hardest to lose this race by seeming to ignore large sections of the ward and turning a blind eye to crime. It didn’t help that she proposed some really bad ideas, like making Manor a one-way street.
She missed going to a run-off last time by one vote. It caught up with her this time. Rodriguez shouldn’t get too comfortable. I don’t think the DSA can get her re-elected next time.

My Grandfather once won a Mayoral race in suburban Chicago by just one vote back in the 60’s. Every vote does count.

If there was ever someone deserving enough to be drawn out of the hat, Pat Davis is that person. For all the attention put on women in Sangamon County, Pat and a couple other fellas put in long hours for the party this cycle that deserves recognition.

Winning by 1 vote for King of the Kingdom that is a City Ward is a mandate. The king will spend 4 years identifying everyone he can who didn’t vote for him. It’s a close shave, but he’s still King for 4 more years; and forewarned.

No. I think Deb Mell will (and should) retire from elective office. She’s been phoning it in for a long time now anyway.

Rodriguez is a one termer. The ward won’t put up with DSA stuff like Ramirez Rosa. Unless Rossana decides to basically ignore the DSA.
