*** UPDATED x1 *** Shuttle diplomacy by leaders to try to avoid overtime

Posted in:

* I’ve been telling subscribers about these meetings for a few hours…

Lots of motion between top leaders at this late hour. @GovPritzker is trying to land the, uh… land the tuna. He’s meeting House Republican Leader Jim Durkin to try and resolve some differences. Still possible we see some late action on sports betting, budget bills tonight.

“I can’t predict whether tonight is going to be the end of it, but we’re going to work hard to try to find a resolution on budget, and also capital.”

Me: Have you extended your hotel?

Durkin chuckles. Pauses. As he walks off: “I’ll be sleeping in Washington Park.”

There have been non-stop meetings among the leaders for several hours now.

Cullerton has been bouncing around all over the place.

*** UPDATE *** He’s been pushing these ideas for at least a week now…

  1. Cullerton should take a smoke break.

  2. Wishing the leaders and governor success. We need big investments in the state and big accomplishments. Businesses love to relocate to Chicago metro in part because of infrastructure and education.

  3. There’s no reason Durkin and Brady should even be playing ball at this point. Don’t put votes on an unbalanced budget, don’t put votes on excessive tax increases that don’t invest in your district. Elections have consequences, let them make the tough votes.

  5. On my bucket List: to see the Senate and House finish and adjourn by 10:00 PM on the last day with all their work completed! I feel like I have 20 years left to see it if the good Lord agrees

  6. Not to sound stupid but I thought the GA was used to not having a budget on time and going into overtime and not caring if they did. This is a nice change of pace and I hope it works. Cue the music for Ted Nugent’s Just what the Doctor ordered.

  7. ON second thought make that Deal by the Dead

  8. The pro business reforms are mostly tax credits. Enough with the business tax credits.

Illinois has major infrastructure revenue needs and businesses/corporations need to contribute not just “jobs” but pay their share of taxes to build and maintain infrastructure.

Many commenters have mentioned how many of the taxes being proposed to pay for a capital bill are regressive and this is the reason, because businesses are not holding up their end.

  11. The Senate really is the upper chamber

Oooohhh, I get it now. You’re that guy who doesn’t realize that republicans have been doing exactly what your suggesting they do for all these years, which has led them to their current super-minority status. Never mind, you’re right - I mean, who needs electoral success? Holding office is overrated anyway
