Yesterday, 10 Republicans voted for the Democrat spending plan. They are most likely cued up to vote for a gas tax increase today. Call them: Brady, Bryant, Davidsmeyer, Demmer, Durkin, Hammond, Keicher, Meier, Murphy, Severin.
Republican leadership is asking for Republican state reps to vote TODAY for a doubling of the gas tax and massive gambling expansion to pay for Pritzker’s capital bill which is full of goodies like money for the Obama center and other capital projects local governments and higher education refused to budget for over the years.
CALL YOUR STATE REP, especially if they are a Republican, and shut this down. The Democrats need to completely own this disaster.
The House convenes at noon so call now. If you have their cell number personally text them.
I am told they have negotiated to get 20 Republican votes on these bills. Stop this bill from being Bi-Partisan.
No links, no phone numbers or other contact information, not even any first names or where they’re from in that e-mail blast. I’m thinking it ain’t gonna work too well.
She is right, though, that the House Republicans have pledged to put 20 votes on these bills. That’s a very heavy lift. It’s a caucus of 44 members and many of them are about as tax-averse as you can get, even though most will love the infrastructure spending.

Republican state Rep. Mike Murphy signals he’s looking at an infrastructure plan that includes doubling the state’s gas tax. While he didn’t divulge his position, he reacted to concerns from others in his party that say Republicans voting on tax increases gives cover to Democrats in conservative-leaning districts heading into the 2020 election.
Or maybe Republicans should hold up their end? The projects are being distributed throughout the state. Some of them should vote to pay for all that construction.

Republicans have become prisoners of their own anti-tax rhetoric. We should identity the largest potholes in Illinois and name rah one for any GOP’er who votes against funding for a capital bill.
Politicians like to put their names on signs.
Let’s do it for them- on the crumbiest roads and the most dilapidated bridges

Will Davis did a great job of calling out this absurd hypocrisy the other day. They’re happy to negotiate for as much capital spending as they can get for their districts, but god help you if you ask them to actually vote for the revenue needed to do that. If you don’t want to take the vote, then make sure to tell your district that you don’t want the proceeds.

I imagine Ives wants to be in line for some of that Uiehlein anti-GOP-incumbent money before Proft scoops it all up.

40/20 was for a long while the default breakdown for House R/Cs but that was when the numbers were much closer than today. Additional factors making this a very heavy lift are 1)the GOP is in fact prisoners of their “anti tax rhetoric” and 2) they have to trust a Dem governor to deliver. He hasn’t given them a reason that I know of not to trust him but it is at this point an unknown. When Thompson Edgar Ryan were there the Dems could still enforce their deals after the vote because they controlled one or both chambers. Not the case today.

That is their whole deal. They want to say “look what I did for you” but not participate in finding a way to pay. This is the entire ILGOP game, especially as you go farther to the right.
They love that government money, just not paying the tab. True welfare state mentality.

Because she almost beat Rauner in the Primary Ives thinks that she’s a major player in GOP politics. If the ILGOP wants to return to the days of relevancy that they had in the past they will need intelligent, skillful moderates to lead them in a state like Illinois.

It is not that heavy of a lift when you think about it.
1) Madigan is not going after the 20 Republicans that vote for the capital bill, so no General Election worries.
2) Republicans who support the bill will have the primary backing of Durkin, GOP County Chairmen, mayors and county boards receiving capital projects, the IMA, Ideas Illinois (presumably including Mike Z), and the building trades, as well as the usual suspects.
3) Yeah, Proft, Uhlein, IPI, and Ives are probably coming after them….
4) In defense they will point to their votes on cannabis, abortion, guns (and maybe taxes and minimum wage, depending on polling)
Don’t get me wrong. I love a good GOP primary. But I will wager Proft does not win a single primary race on this issue.

At the end of the day, Ives wasn’t able to win the primary and has been a sore loser ever since. If the GOP is ever going to win back the seats we lost in the suburbs we are going to need pragmatic conservatives who actually want to get things done for their districts. Rep. Murphy seems like the right kind of Republican to do just that.
