* At the end of a whiny editorial about the state’s cannabis legalization measure, the Tribune editorial board opines…
Because as the Grateful Dead, early advocates of mind-bending substances, noted in song, life with drugs can make for a long, strange trip.
That’s some tortured syntax right there.
* More importantly, though, “What a long, strange trip it’s been” is a line from a Dead song called “Truckin’”…
The lyrics refer to a drug raid of the band’s hotel lodgings in New Orleans during a concert tour earlier in 1970:
Busted, down on Bourbon Street
Set up, like a bowling pin
Knocked down, it gets to wearing thin
They just won’t let you be
Leave it to the Tribune to bungle a Dead reference. The whole idea of cannabis legalization is to finally stop and reverse the very real harm done from arrest and incarceration.

Very nice, good sir. Being the youngest brother growing up in the 60’s meant I got a lot of exposure to the Dead, Jefferson Airplane, etc.
Hearing the Dead is like going through your drawers and finding an old shirt that you love to wear…

We did such a great thing in history, to get together and pass marijuana legalization when two Democratic states failed to even vote on it, New York and New Jersey. Kudos to those who overcame their reservations and voted to begin moving away from the abysmal failure of marijuana criminalization.

If we prevented people from doing things “because what they considered dangerous or immoral will suddenly become as trendy and marketable as a craft beer”, we would indeed live in a land of limited freedom and fun. As for “trendy and marketable as a craft beer” I doubt that the MJ market is going to become satureated with IPAs that taste like hop milshakes (also part of the Cannabaceae family)
Might just be the high rises I have worked in while working in the loop but more than once I have smelled that smell in the stairwell and the world keeps on rolling.

And just how sad is it to butcher a reference to a 50-year-old tune in a failed effort to sound cool? Who wrote it, Joseph Medill?
Can we expect more rock-with-the-addition-of-roll references from the hep-cats in troncsylvania?

I’m curious about what this means for traffic stops, and how that figures into law enforcement opposition to legalization. Officers and K9s have used the smell of marijuana as probable cause to search vehicles. Do law enforcement agencies now voluntarily adjust their policies to address that, or will it take a test case and legal challenge to force change?

I guess the troncs missed that day in high school history class on Prohibition, when “others” considered beer “dangerous” and “immoral.”

Who can say with a straight face that pot is immoral and should be banned while there’s a bar on every corner? If you’re not actively campaigning for the return of the temperance movement, you are a hypocrite of a highest order.

From the moment we read those words I thought:
(1) Katrina took the day off
(2) Zorn wrote the piece trying to look hip
While not a Dead expert I would have bet a lot that they bungled the quote — mostly because they bungle nearly everything. Great catch
For your next trick listen to the first segments of Pearson’s Sunday show. His guest was some dude touting a new website pushing term limits and remap. He basically confirms compliance with the Voting Rights Act cannot happen with pending reform schemes. Actually he calls it “tricky”
Pretty funny stuff.

Not throw cold water on the “social equity” victory lap, but the economic aspects of the Marijuana Bill seem like Davos inspired, nip around the edges, BS. Elizabeth Warren is on to real social equity by her promotion of a wealth tax. Any thing less is really just designed to placate the masses being squeezed by massive and inequitable wealth distribution imbalance in the United States.

While I agree the Trib was whiny, the issue of legalization isn’t so cut and dried. For the record, I don’t use MJ, nor do I drink alcoholic beverages or indulge in other street drugs. Never have, too much family history of addictive behaviors to ever want to start. Obviously, prohibition never works. But why does it keep coming up as a solution, because problems almost always develop with these chemicals. people abuse them and the rest of us have to pay for their treatment and deal with the consequences. The world will continue, I won’t smoke but that doesn’t mean I have a lot of sympathy for people who abuse these drugs and then come running for help. And no, I don’t have sympathy for cig smokers. they made a choice, ok but don’t ask me to pay for it.
