Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat, issued an executive order Monday stating that the rainbow flag will be flown over the state Capitol building in recognition of Pride month.
The rainbow flag is a symbol of the LGBTQ social movement and is widely displayed during Pride month. […]
According to the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, this is the first time ever Illinois has flown the rainbow flag over its Capitol.
* A pic from Twitter…
Our State Capitol is flying a Pride Flag by order of @GovPritzker. This flag is very special, since it came from The Phoenix Center–the LGBTQ Community Center for Central Illinoisš³ļøāššŗšø #twill #Pride2019 pic.twitter.com/8OzfMQEThq

Most of the comments under that tweet were ridiculously negative.

“Most of the comments under that tweet were ridiculously negative.” I wish that weren’t so completely expected.

Speaking to the negative comments-
Always entertaining to watch people cloak their bigotry/homophobia with the old “we should respect all people” claptrap.
If we did, there would be no need for flags for different parts of society.
Also, it’s a flag that will be flown temporarily that is flown in the correct order. Have a snickers and take a nap.

Good I guess surprised not up there before
Not being sarcastic but I think we need more Flag poles. One for Us next tallest for State then a couple for āspecial ā flags for special occasions. Did they take down POW MIA flag for this because that would probably get people going

=== Did they take down POW MIA flag===
When was the last time that even flew?

Is anyone surprised? Not me.

Having crawled up to the top of the dome, I have great admiration for the SOS workers who climb up to raise and lower the flags.

Me either. Itās beautiful that Illinois is established as a state that strongly supports and recognizes LGBTQ people and rights.

Can I get a flag up there that simply says “Think GOD”?

Anyone who thinks the fight for true LGBTQ equality is over just needs to read these comments, and the comments in the social media feeds of companies that issue Pride posts, to know that the fight is not over for true love and acceptance.

One good thing those posts accomplish is they encourage people to come out and show the world who they really are. Iām talking of course about the bigoted commenters.

For greater excitement, fly it over all state facilities and offices. But that might be a bridge too far at this point, unfortunately.
Comment by Excessively Rabid Monday, Jun 17, 19 @ 1:19 pm
So we do this for this population because they have been/are being persecuted/marginalized/experiencing bigotry. So where’s the Black Pride flag because we’re told that implicit bias is negatively impacting Black Americans. Or where is the Hispanic Pride Flag? Again, I am not surprised by the governor doing this. The democrats are in charge and will do all of this because they believe it supports their power. But where does it end?

When everyone is treated equally and fairly under the law. Whether you know it or not, you are represented by that rainbow flag too.

Yes, I’m totally certain you own one of those and proudly display it at your house.

The rainbow signifies everyone. We are all different just like all the colors are different. Veterans, civilians, people of all races and language groups, thatās what the rainbow means. So donāt pout, youāre not left out.

June is LGBTQ Pride Month, and this year is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprisings. So the flag on the Capitol is very appropriate.
Comment by Grandson of Man Monday, Jun 17, 19 @ 4:02 pm
Da Big Bad Wolf == The rainbow flag was designed by GAY Gilbert Baker in 1974 and the colors mean; pink was for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic, indigo for harmony and violet for spirit.

I opened the blog as I usually do before signing out for the day, and now Iām sitting in my office at the JRTC with tears streaming down my face. This might seem like a small thing to some; this might seem like itās being shoved in your face to others; but, to someone like me, this is like walking in a dream. Iām a grown man and have been a state employee/appointee for almost a decade now, and this funny, badly cropped and washed out photo of the State Capitol flag pole is perhaps the first time Iāve felt any sense of belonging in this system. I wish I was in Springfield right now to see it myself. Hoisting a bit of fabric above a building isnāt usually very meaningful in and of itself, but when the message is genuinely one of progress and inclusivity, itās a pretty dramatic result. The orange bar on the Pride flag represents healing. What a wonderful thing healing is. Pride isnāt just for us queer folx and gender and sexual minorities; pride is for allies, too. So thank you to all of you allies supporting me and other members of marginalized communities. Thatās your flag flying over the Captiol as well.

HappyGuy, I wish you were too and know that I support you. I’ve had LGBTQ friends since high school (I’m 62 now) and for the life of me, I’ve never understood why I should be worried about/interested in who other people love…
Comment by Union Thug Gramma Monday, Jun 17, 19 @ 9:44 pm
Baker copied the world peace flag of the races to replace the pink triangle symbol that was used before. The point of the flag is that we are all different, every one of us.
