* I’ve burned through the last hour dealing with a spam attack on one of my posts and looking for interesting and fresh stories. Success on the first front, not so much on the second. So, I’m turning it over to you. As always, keep it Illinois-centric and be kind to each other.

MWRD Commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos, Board of Review Commissioner Michael Cabonargi, and State Senator Iris Martinez all presented to the Cook County Dem Party to run against the unsinkable Dorothy Brown.

So, Fritz Kaegi says commercial and industrial property has been historically under-assessed, burdening residential taxpayers. Ok, say it has been.
However, in Cook County the level of assessment is only 10% for residential, vacant, and apartment properties, and 25% for commercial, industrial, and non-profit properties.
Assuming he fixes the assessment issue on the front end to provide truly accurate assessments, does Cook County need to level the assessment percentage for all property to make property taxes truly fair? And what would that do to residential property taxes?

When will Illinois officials start dealing with the gnat apocalypse??

The only thing knee high by the 4th of July is my lawn. Enough with the rain already.

A Cook County judge just appointed a special prosecutor for the Jussie Smollett case. Not good news for Kim Foxx. And a tough call now awaits AG Raoul. Statutorily, his office has the right to assume the special prosecutor duties, if he wants. I’m guessing he won’t.

Tear One -
It depends how poorly the commercial and industrial properties have been assessed. For those classes, even small under-assessments (say only appraising at 95% instead of full value) applied systematically will translate to significant increases for residential property owners. So if he both fixed the assessments and changed the level, it could go either way.
Speaking to the first question, Cook County doesn’t need to change the level of assessments. The assessment levels are set to tax different properties at different rates, not to adjust for errors in assessments. The County Board can decide if that’s what it wants, but I have a feeling they just the assessments to be right and let the assessment levels work for themselves.

The summer that isn’t. According to meteorologist Tom Skilling’s past writing(s), cooler air masses come to the Midwest because of warming up north and the shift or waviness of the jet stream. This is reportedly due to human-caused warming and increase in CO2 levels to the highest in human history.
We see smoggy skies in Illinois when there are wildfires in Canada or elsewhere—single places on the planet. Imagine an entire world issuing forth pollution. Black Sabbath and other artists decried pollution years ago. The Osmonds did a surprisingly-rocking tune about motor vehicle pollution years ago, called “Crazy Horses.”

So not only does Jack Thomas get 2 years of paid time off, but he then is guaranteed $300,000 a year to teach once class per semester if he chooses to return to WIU. That is more than his current presidential salary.

Speaking of gnats. The homebrew floating around does seem to work.

4 parts H2O
1 part listerine
1/2 part liquid dish detergent

The cook count inspector general and now a special prosecutor are investigating the Smollett case and Kim Foxx. She didn’t appear at the county party’s pre-slating session. I’d bet on her not running.

The biggest economic crisis in Illinois right now, which get worse with every rain, is agriculture. There already were record levels of family farm bankruptcy filings this year due to tariffs and other market issues, even before the current inability to get crops in. Scores of good people in ag are truly desperate, the insurance and banking sectors are over-stretched, and the economic ripples travel far. This should lead the business section reporting.

While scary for those with lakefront property and the occasional biker/jogger - I’d MUCH rather have higher lake water levels than lower. If only we can somehow siphon it into some reserve for the future.

If I am reading this Smollett opinion right, the special prosecutor will have the ability not only to charge anyone related to how the case was handled if evidence warrants, but also to charge Smollett again. I suppose since the charges were dropped there is no double jeopardy claim, especially since the judge found under the circumstances that the prosecutor wasn’t lawfully empowered.

I'’ve found Absorbine Jr. to be effective in fighting the gnats. Seems to keep the wife at bay, too.

Giolito threw batting practice stuff at the Cubs in Game 2. I wasn’t expecting that, but really enjoyed the show that Contreras put on.

Any family farm bankruptcies that have occurred already this year are not due to tariffs. Let’s keep the narrative honest. Many individual family farm economies are seriously stressed and under siege by the rainy weather though, for sure. There are many prayers and fingers crossed in Central Illinois right now.

My cardiologist thought my spam attacks might have been a contributing factor to my heart attack. I liked to fry up two slices of spam and place them on white toast with grape jelly on one slice and ketchup on the other. Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it. It’s been nine years since I have had either one. Thank you, Doc.

The Fed Reserve out of Chicago has loan defaults in the ag sector at 19% before the tariffs and this lousy weather hit . I am in Walkers camp and believe we could see a crisis like we did in the eighties. not good.

But you can fix this issue fast. There is a tool that creates content like human, just search in google:
