* This may or may not be related, but McCook is in Sen. Marty Sandoval’s district…
///BREAKING/// FBI this morning raided multiple locations as part of an ongoing corruption probe, including the municipal building in tiny west suburb of McCook. Story coming.
— Jason Meisner (@jmetr22b) September 26, 2019
Confirmed: FBI agents raided Village Hall in McCook, where Cook County Commissioner Jeff Tobolski is Mayor. Tobolski is absent from today’s Cook County Board meeting — but Toni Preckwinkle said he is out sick and bought commissioners Buona beef because it’s his birthday.
— Gregory Pratt (@royalpratt) September 26, 2019
*** UPDATE 1 *** The Sun-Times is reporting that the Village of Lyons’ town hall was also raided today. Lyons is also in Sandoval’s district. The paper is reporting that “other locations” were raided as well.
*** UPDATE 2 *** This is the mayor of Lyons…
Another breaking news update: The FBI also searched Getty Insurance, the longtime business and political power base of Mayor Chris Getty and his father Ken Getty.
— Casey Toner (@ctoner) September 26, 2019
More on him here.
*** UPDATE 3 *** “Investigative activity” in a town also represented by Sen. Sandoval…
An FBI spokesman is also confirming "investigative activity" in southwest suburb Summit. https://t.co/eJ5PbAV43D
— Chicago Sun-Times (@Suntimes) September 26, 2019
///BREAKING/// Just confirmed the FBI was also at village hall in Summit today conducting investigation. Apparently not a search warrant, but they were there, per an FBI spokesman.
— Jason Meisner (@jmetr22b) September 26, 2019
*** UPDATE 4 *** Sun-Times…
The investigation also includes agents from IRS Criminal Investigation.
*** UPDATE 5 *** Sun-Times…
[McCook village attorney Gary Perlman] said investigators were seeking information related to “various contractors that have done work with the village.”
…Adding… WGN TV…
An FBI spokesperson confirmed Chicago personnel were at the village hall conducting an authorized law enforcement action, and had no further comment on the matter.
Jeff Tobolski is the longtime mayor of McCook. The Democrat also serves as a Cook County Commissioner. Tobolski did not immediately respond to a phone message left at village hall and his district office. It’s not known whether Tobolski is a focus of the federal investigation.
* NBC 5…
Two sources with knowledge of the situation said that FBI agents executed search warrants at the village hall, located at 5000 Glencoe Avenue, at around 7:30 a.m. CST.
One source said the agents carted out several boxes and computer equipment.
…Adding… Sun-Times…
Carlos Aparicio, a lawyer on Tobolski’s Cook County staff, said federal agents hadn’t visited the McCook mayor’s county offices, but that’s all he really knew.
Watch that CS-T story for updates.

You might say that the Trump Justice Department operates the Northern District of Illinois “differently ” than some of the recent U.S. Attorneys.

There might be more FBI agents in McCook right now than residents.
Comment by City Zen Thursday, Sep 26, 19 @ 1:01 pm
Wow. Look at a google map image of McCook, IL. The community only occupies 2.61 square miles, and the residential area is less 1/100th of that amount. Looks like a HUGE industrial tax base there, with few city services being necessary.

I’d say we should start a pool on which southwest suburb will be raided next, but the answer is obviously Cicero.

I have no idea if Tobolski has done anything wrong, but I do know that I have never attended a meeting of the Cook County Board without hearing him make at least one incredibly dumb comment.
Comment by Rasselas Thursday, Sep 26, 19 @ 2:35 pm
Happy Birthday to Cook County Commissioner Jeffrey Tobolski. Thank you for the beef sandwich and I hope your feeling better. Please support this investigation by telling the truth. The good book says that the truth will set you free. Not necessarily from Federal prison but from the guilt of illegal activities.

=== An FBI spokesperson confirmed Chicago personnel were at the village hall conducting an authorized law enforcement action, and had no further comment on the matter. ===
To be honest, I think these public raids without comment are a little tacky. I also think that its unfair to those that are not the subject of the investigation. If you are collecting evidence, there are ways of doing it in a discreet manner. All this does is start a media driven speculation game that will have negative impacts on people’s reputations that may not even be involved.

How many raids must the FBI have before this becomes national news? Somewhat snarky but also wondering.
Comment by Flat Bed Ford Thursday, Sep 26, 19 @ 4:14 pm

I think it’s 5 towns or two counties, but Illinois might push that to a higher degree this week.

Current Lyons Mayor Chris Getty is the son of former Lyons Mayor Ken Getty, who was convicted of fraud/bid-rigging and spent 10 years in federal prison in the 90s-00s.
Several years ago there was an investigation into complaints that Lyons bar owners were being extorted to buy their business insurance through Getty Insurance (which was also raided today), lest they wouldn’t get their liquor permits renewed. When that investigation came to light, the building that housed all those records (the Lyons Chamber of Commerce) mysteriously burned down overnight.
This list goes on and on and on and on…… this is no coincidence.
