Nothing is ever easy, but persistence pays off for @ChicagoBars (and everyone)

Posted in:

* These were, I think, the second and third posts by the genius behind the @ChicagoBars Twitter account about the American flag flying outside the Thompson Center…

Your Friday Thompson Center flag update: Day 8? 9? American flag still all messed up. Get it together JRTC CMS pic.twitter.com/W7M40Sbt2t

Thompson Center American flag watch. Day 12? 13? Maybe CMS can borrow CFD ladder truck to do the bare minimum? pic.twitter.com/1MlbKv3peq

— Chicago Bars (@chicagobars) October 15, 2019

* The Pritzker administration took notice…

Everything, and I mean everything is more complicated in government when you dig into it. And I mean that in a non-snarky way. But maybe CMS can take the current flayed flag down until a new flag comes in? https://t.co/i2DMgwK3fz

— Chicago Bars (@chicagobars) October 15, 2019

* But, like @ChicagoBars said, nothing is ever easy…

So we got on this case when it first came to light 2 weeks ago. Turns out - another remnant of the budget standoff. https://t.co/HsZSWdpJts

We reached out to the business last week, indicated that we want to restore the state’s relationship with their business and they are now working on replacing all of the flags so they can fly proudly and properly.We care about the flag and want it restored to its proper grandeur.

These flags fly with a special rod patch to make sure the flags don’t flap in the wind which makes it all more complicated. You are right that nothing is simple.

— Anne Caprara (@anacaprana) October 15, 2019

* All’s well that ends well…

In fact, we are using this opportunity to replace all of the flags around the JRTC so everyone can look forward to brand new symbols of our nation’s democracy this weekend.

Hat tip to Hannah Meisel. I am a loyal @ChicagoBars follower, but I had somehow missed this entire thing until she tweeted about it.

  2. Twitter, these two weeks;

    Bad - 7,689,352
    Good - 1

    This is cool stuff to both governing and outreach.

    Well done all.

  5. Another win for Helmut Jahn: Designed a government building with flagpoles that are unreachable by government employees.

  6. Governing by social media account is a train wreck waiting to happen.

    Stuff getting fixed/done right should not so routinely depend upon mentions in the “right” twitter account or blog.

    ChicagoBars at some point in there pinged the @CMSIllinois account…no response.

    This is how Quincy veteran’s home happened. Government by Twitter marginalized people not on Twitter.

    Maybe that condor is also used to clean the windows of the lobby.

    There does seem to be an architect’s blind spot. I can’t tell you how many buildings I’ve seen that have light fixtures in places where you can’t easily change the bulb, above staircases etc. Because bulbs never burn out, and flags never rip.

  8. @chicagobars -
    The last time CMS moved rapidly was to assist the Sangamon County GOP after an acquittal in the federally flubbed MSI trials … /s ??

  9. Just get a couple of Pilsen guys, a thousand bucks and a ladder. Done and done.

  10. Rauner administration:We would fix these flags if it wasn’t for these corrupt unions and AFSCAMMY.

    Pritzker administration:Flags fixed.

  11. Anna, why can’t the IL State Police who protect the building take this on? Let’s reduce unnecessary spending on having to hire a firm to do flags. Please?
