* Gov. Pritzker has vowed to veto this bill, with a spokesperson saying “We’re not going to bail out a business that didn’t pay the taxes they were supposed to”…
She adds that the exemption sunsetted without anyone realizing. "This industry did not know" the tax lapsed. "It would be inequitably and unfair" for them not having this knowledge.

Sen. Anderson is rising in support of this bill. He has an aviation company in his district as well, which he says would leave. "I cannot tell you how important this legislation is….too the state of Illinois."

Sen. Bennett is also standing in support of the bill. He additionally has an aviation company in his district. That company has "increased employment…and commerce" there.
He says this bill does not protect "wealthy plane owners." The senator says that is not the case.

Sen. Scott Bennett said during floor debate that the vast majority of the planes worked on in his district come from out of state and without the tax break the owners would go somewhere else.

Hey Rich,
Just wanted to reach out and say that we corrected the record to reflect that Sen. Koehler voted in favor of HB 3902.
Pritzker really had no choice on this. He’s very wealthy and is known for using a fleet of private jets, so supporting this bill would’ve put him in an awkward political spot.

Seems like a win for Pritzker if he vetos this and they overturn the veto.
That being said I’m surprised that there isn’t a compromise here. Elliott Aviation didn’t slow down their hiring when they lost their property tax lawsuit even though they said they would move jobs out of state if they didn’t get their way.

Wow, that’s a lot more dem votes than I would have guessed. I look forward to seeing the “Senator X voted to give $50 million of taxpayers money to wealthy private jet owners” attack ads next year. Or, if the fair tax passes, they’ll say “Senator X voted to raise your taxes, then turned around and gave $50 million of that money to rich private jet owners”. These ads kind of write themselves, though with trump on the ballot they probably won’t have much impact on incumbent dems.

Sure he did, he could have moved the narrative from “Corporate Jet set” to preserving jobs for hard working airplane mechanics and helping small town airports across Illinois.

The question is whether DCEO and Dept of Revenue opposes the bill in committee the first go-around, or whether this is just clean-up for show once again.
I still have no clue, but I am curious.
You would think a governor could muster more than one No vote, right?

Doesn’t that become moot, even if the veto is then overridden?
It’s the politics at play here, not the policy.

Let’s be honest about this too. Aviation is a boondoggle for the rich at small airports that do not provide passenger service. They cry of “economic development” even though there is no evidence that it helps and there are no passengers to service. If you want to look for savings in the state budget, that might be a place to start.

Wow an overwhelming acknowledgment from the Illinois Senate that we have to compete with other states to grow our economy and create and retain jobs in the private sector.
Aviation is certainly not a boondoggle for the middle class workers it employs

Impossible to know a hypothetical, but I wonder how many of these senators would be onboard for tax amnesty if this was a $50m hit on average working people rather than a luxury business for the wealthy?
