* Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) got a surprise this week when she opened her campaign mailbox…
Cassidy said she’s worked with the Illinois Policy Institute on criminal justice reform, campaign finance reform and ethics. So, she’s depositing the check and not refunding it.

Its a right wing conspiracy to paint her as more moderate by cashing the check so they can take her out with someone more liberal.

Not.Good.At.All. Ugh, Why, Rep. Cassidy? This is exactly what many on the left dislike about Democrats. But it’s not the end of my world because I consider her voting record, which I love. But still, ugh.

A case where the IPI is policy driven, not partisan driven.
There are not permanent enemies, just permanent interests.

Good for her. And good for them.

She could use the money for an ad for the progressive tax. And include at the bottom “Paid for by the Illinois Policy Institute.

You know, I may be naive. But I don’t think this contribution is going to transform Kelly Cassidy into a right-wing zealot.
We’ll see…

Riiight. Based on your warped political mindset, we can expect Rep. Cassidy to carry IPI’s water from here forward.

Okay, I know paranoia is one of my issues, but wouldn’t this leave her open for attack from labor or from further left of her?
I can see the mailer. “Rep. Cassidy is supported by the Illinois Policy Institute”
Why would she take the money if this might come up. Yes, I may be being foolish and I am always a learner in politics. Am I off on this?
Comment by Honeybear Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 1:39 pm
The IP is allowed the chance for a comeback. They are serving their time in the penalty box. If they stick to policy and not politics, there is room at the table for them… Unless OW sends them to Hades in a hand basket.

Who, in that district, would run, and think they could run Left of her?
With respect, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Is it possible to be further left of Kelly?

===… sends them to…===
I think a great deal of their propaganda is either wholly dishonest or dishonest enough to force a narrative they drive.
But, even to that, any group that can work to 60/71 and 30/36… and signature to policy and legislation, all the power to them.
They are by their own definition a partisan group wanting and frankly needing bipartisan support.
They ain’t legislators. They are who any partisan (alleged non-partisan think tank, but… ) group is, to policy.
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 1:52 pm
Well thanks OW, I have no idea about her district. I just have an incredible allergic reaction to IPI.

It’s just another instance of “all politics is local”, nothing more.
Be well.

I don’t get it. Does she need the money that badly? Why jeopardize her other relationships, particularly with the unions?
Comment by Be Gone MJM Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 2:28 pm
She’s not jeopardizing anything. Knowing Kelly, she probably just loved the irony of being one of their chief nemeses on almost every issue and getting their check.
Comment by Chicago Cynic Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:03 pm
Yes it is possible to be further left, we don’t call it the People’s Republic of Rogers Park for nothing.
And I think her last primary she won by over 85%. This check opens her up to win only by 85%
Comment by Kyle Hillman Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:05 pm
===She’s not jeopardizing anything===
Exactly. Some of you need to take a nap. You actually think a primary opponent is gonna appear by the filing deadline next Monday? Over this? Please.

==They are by their own definition a partisan group==
No, actually. They are NON-partisan by law and in their mission statement. There’s a pretty huge difference between non-partisan and bi-partisan.
Its an apolitical group focused on policy. They work with anyone from any part as long as they’re advancing good ideas.

=== They are NON-partisan by law and in their mission statement. There’s a pretty huge difference between non-partisan and bi-partisan.===
…yet, time after time, be it sitting in for Senate appointments to Republican Day at state fair, and “IPI” is part of the building of the ILGOP (until they weren’t because the phony needed to pretend, also for tax purposes, maybe?)
=== Its an apolitical group focused on policy. They work with anyone from any part as long as they’re advancing good ideas.===
It’s the myth, and the Rauner years blew that myth out of the water.
What *is* important about this check and working outside Raunerite channels is IPI kinda remembered about 60/71, 30/36 and a governor signing, as opposed to leveraging to stop overrides.
If you believe in the honest discussion IPI is bipartisan… yikes.
In this moment, it’s a bipartisan move.
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:32 pm
Political animal - as long as those “good ideas” involve union busting.
Comment by State of DenIL Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:34 pm
==If you believe in the honest discussion IPI is bipartisan… yikes.==
I don’t. My argument is that its ridiculous and untrue to call them bipartisan, because they’re non-partisan.
Facts don’t care about political parties. But CapFax commenters do. So when the facts don’t fit their narrative, they make up nonsense and try to make it political.
Comment by Political Animal Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:37 pm
Not a great look. I get it, you worked with them. But that group is going to spend the next year thrashing you and your colleagues over the progressive tax. Why even risk looking like you’re aligned with them?
I guess I hope the thousand bucks is worth it.
Comment by BilboSwaggins Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:40 pm
=== I don’t. My argument is that its ridiculous and untrue to call them bipartisan, because they’re non-partisan.===
Nothing about IPI is non-partisan.
Choosing to support Rep. Cassidy makes them bipartisan.
This myth they are non-partisan is for tax folks and to ease the conscience of people as IPI drives to hurt people with policy.
=== So when the facts don’t fit their narrative, they make up nonsense and try to make it political.===
(Sigh)
Do we really need to revisit the Sen. Murphy replacement session and last summer’s Republican state fair?
We can…
This is a bipartisan move by a phony non-partisan group, living the adage, “there are no permanent enemies… “
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:43 pm
Excellent counter arguments. People go to fairs.
My daughter once checked out Republican day while she was at the fair riding carnival rides.
I guess she’s a partisan hack.
Comment by Political Animal Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:46 pm
=== Not a great look.===
Politics to governing is not a religion, thinking it is won’t get much done by anyone.
You win a district by 85% and your bona fides point to this check as policy driven, it only enhances in a good way, and there’s no chance that there’s danger for taking it. Nope.
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:46 pm
=== My daughter once checked out Republican day while she was at the fair riding carnival rides.===
Was she pointed out as one of the new folks building the ILGOP?
Friend, you want something that Rauner took away from the IPI; the phony backstory of non-partisan.
Can’t unring a bell.
Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:48 pm
==So when the facts don’t fit their narrative, they make up nonsense==
That’s a pretty good descriptor of what the Illinois Policy Institute does a majority of the time.
As for Rep Cassidy, heck yes keep the check.
Comment by Demoralized Monday, Nov 25, 19 @ 3:52 pm
Good for Rep Cassidy to get a donation; however, I do believe that this is a ploy for IPI to start portraying themselves as less republican than they are. I think they are using the donation to rebrand themselves to the public, but keep the same extreme republican slant they always had. If the public views them as more legit, then it’s easier to push their views.

Kudos to both parties. Proving that your don’t have to agree 100% of the time to be friends. Refreshing to see in an arena dominated by tribalism and single issue blinders. More of this from all sides please.
