A Capitol dome study conducted earlier this month revealed “some obvious flaws on the exterior of the dome,” a state employee said Tuesday.
Inspectors also found cracks inside the structure and changes made over the years that have altered the Statehouse’s historical profile. The flagpole atop the Capitol needs to be replaced and the holiday lights will probably need to be hung in a different manner, Harl Ray, senior project manager for the secretary of state’s Department of Physical Services, said at a Capitol Architect board meeting. […]
Inspectors also “discovered a crack on all four compass points” of the bracket structures supporting the stone columns visible outside the Capitol.
“They are not worried. There is no structural failure. They’re just wanting to know what happened and why,” Ray said. “Those cracks look like they’ve been there for decades — a long, long time.”
Assessors will reexamine those areas to determine whether additional support is needed, he added. They will be aided by a set of architectural drawings from 1870, which were donated from the Springfield Lincoln Library’s Sangamon Valley Collection last summer.

I expected to see a Trib editorial today using this as an analogy to Illinois being “broken.” Maybe it’s too obvious and too corny even for them.
It is a 142 year-old dome, that hasn’t been worked on since the mid 1970’s.

Or is the proper analogy that we have a misspelled word in our state motto on the stained glass state seal atop our Capitol’s dome?
What is sovereignity? Is that like serenity?

Yet another building where we may end up lucky to have a governor foot the bill on previous years mistakes?

Harl Ray is one of the good guys. Very active in charities associated with the American Legion and the Sons of the American Legion.

“Assessors will reexamine”
I’ve got a visual of Joe Berrios, Fritz Kaegi and Jim Houlihan belaying all over the dome like when Kramer, George and Dan Cortese went rock climbing.
That will sustain me this whole, cold winter day.

Why is the Architect of the Capitol a Legislative agency when upkeep of the Statehouse is the responsibility of the SOS Department of Physical Services?

This is screaming for Phil Swift and a Flex Seal commercial. Think of the sponsorship dollars.

Is this why there are no holiday lights this year?

Another example of the rising cost of deferred maintenance in state owned properties.
