Rich- in my 28 years in public school education, seasonal workers were notified prior to the end of the year by their Boards of Education that they’d be employed again in August for the next 10 months, and thus, were not eligible for unemployment. Some filed, and as a superintendent, I appealed, and they lost. Now, every paraprofessional, admin assistant, and bus driver who are non-certified and working from August to May are eligible for benefits PLUS the bonus $600 (HB2544). Another way to drive up the Unemployment numbers, even though all of these employees did not lose a penny of income during the school closure and are not at-risk of losing their job. More than suspicious, I’d say…and as the Teacher Unions spread the word to their non-cert co-workers, numbers will increase. Governor’s objective is being met.

Rural schools that’s not true. There might be a law in place addressing teachers specifically, but for others unemployment is for when a person is unemployed through no fault of his own. It has nothing to do with the fact that an employer might rehire an employee at a future date or not. And the employee has to declare any income earned while off.

Where did all these newly unemployed people work before being laid off? Retail? Restaurants? Hair stylist?

Rural Schools of Illinois - My wife is a para pro and has been for the last 8 years. Found out that she wasn’t eliga1able for unemployment the first summer break when she applied and was denied. Took us by surprise. Then we received word that on June 5, the gov signed a new law that for 2020, she is eligable, she applied and we just received the 1st payment. Yes the money is nice because she has been laid off of her part time summer gigs this year because of the covid.
How many of the new claims are the non certified school employees because of this new law? This is important as I believe it totally distorts the numbers.
It will be nice to find out
