AG Raoul talks about what he’s gone through so far

Posted in:

* Fran Spielman

It started late Saturday night with sweating, shivering, teeth-chattering and feet that felt like they were on fire. That was followed by a cough that wouldn’t quit and a sore throat Kwame Raoul described as “out of this world.”

Raoul, Illinois attorney general, said Thursday he’s now “stuck in solitary confinement in my bedroom” as the highest-ranking Illinois politician known to have tested positive for the coronavirus.

He’s feeling “a little bit better” since he was tested late Monday. The results came Tuesday morning. His fever, which spiked at 101.4 degrees, has come down. But after a “meeting or two” on Zoom, he feels “exhausted afterwards, as if I played a football game.”

“I tire very easily. But overall, I have not had any breathing difficulties, which is a plus because I’ve heard of others having such breathing difficulties. Just feeling beat down, though,” he said. […]

The attorney general said he has no idea where he might have contracted the virus. He noted having “stopped by to support a couple of restaurants” in recent weeks. But, he refused to identify them for fear of discouraging sorely-needed business at a time when restaurants are fighting for survival and have reopened to outdoor dining.

Lots more in there, so you know what to do.

* I listened to this interview he did today and he sounded pretty good, so let’s hope the progress continues…

It’s just such a weird virus, though. It can do some crazy things to bodies.

Get well soon, general.

  4. Trumpers focus on the deaths, but they are ambivalent to being so sick for so long, and the long-term affects, which we don’t even know yet.

Or nothing at all. It is indeed a fascinating virus from a medical point of view. My hope is that once it is fully understood we’ll know more about viruses in general. May help minimize or contain future epidemics.

  6. “It’s just such a weird virus, though.”

My 76-year-old mother tested positive for the virus just after a hospital stay for internal bleeding. She’s in generally poor health and when she tested positive, I truly thought I’d never see her again because she was in a rehabilitation hospital to get PT and OT before she could come home, and we were not permitted to visit her.
Somehow, she remained asymptomatic. She tested positive again 14 days after the first test so she had to remain under care until receiving two consecutive negative results, which finally happened end of last week and on Sunday. She just finally came home Monday for the first time since shortly after Easter.
I went from fearing the worst to watching it pass on without so much as giving her a cough or even a fever.

  11. So glad AG Raoul has not developed breathing problems, which can be a terrible aspect of this illness, having to go on a ventilator. Wishing him a speedy and compete recovery.

  12. wonder about the value of contact tracing when the states AG doesn’t want to identify the restraunts….

  13. Blue, he didn’t want it in the paper. C’mon. You can’t possibly be this dense.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jun 18, 20 @ 4:16 pm

  14. Really, BDD?

We have no evidence that he has been non-compliant or less than truthful with his contract tracers.

He’s not required to spill his guys to the media.

Wishing AG Raoul a speedy and non-eventful recovery.

Father Ted, glad to hear your mom is doing so well. The moment you put in her age, I got a sinking feeling, that you were going to be sharing some bad or sad news. Thankfully, your mom is demonstrating that age doesn’t necessarily mean a bad Covid-19 outcome.

Attorney General Kwame Raoul, have someone from the Dept of Public Health to privately go to each restaurant where you were with test kits. Have IDPH test everyone who were there on the day(s) you were there. Do the testing when they are not open to the public. This could prevent others from come down with the virus, and the person(s) who test positive need to talk to a doctor and be quarantined for 2 weeks. Don’t publicize the results so the restaurants can remain open with healthy workers.

  21. The contact tracers will get to the bottom of this ….

    Comment by 44th Thursday, Jun 18, 20 @ 8:02 pm

  22. Blue, what’s wrong with you? The contract tracers are covered by HIPPA laws and get the pertinent information to the people impacted confidentiality and provide resources affected individuals need if they had indeed been exposed. Restaurants shouldn’t be punished because of potential contact at their business because of an airborne virus that can live for up to three hours in the air.

  23. Get well, AG Raoul. Hope to see you out there soon doing what you do best.

  25. personally I would go to those restraunts in question….but it does seem a bit unusual if the publics supposed best interest was at stake this should be public info.

Comment by Blue Dog Dem Thursday, Jun 18, 20 @ 9:06 pm

  26. @Blue Dog Dem,

When you say “if the public’s best interest was at stake”

are you saying any time a contract tracer finds out a Covid-19 positive person has been in a restaurant everyone should be notified?

Or do you think these restaurants should be named because of the office Kwame Raoul occupies?
