  3. I would like to ask that everyone please keep the family of Dr. Michael Camerer in your prayers today. Mike passed away on Thursday suddenly. His services are today. Mike was the Republican candidate for the 45th State Representative seat.

  4. The renewed interest in the history of slavery in Illinois might be an opportunity to rename Kane County. Elias Kent Kane, Illiinois’ 1st Secretary of State, died in Washington DC in December 1835 just weeks before the Illinois legislature carved a new County out of LaSalle. And it was named for the recently departed.

During the Constitutional Convention in 1818 leading to statehood, Kane was a vociferous and persistent advocate for a pro-slavery constitution even though the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 explicitly prohibited slavery. His proposed Constitution was rejected, but he nevertheless persisted in his efforts until the US Congress finally approved an antislavery Constitution for the 21st State. However, even that version allowed “Indentured Servitude” which was a subterfuge to perpetuate slavery under another name.Governor Edwards (Edwards County) vetoed a bill that would have outlawed indentured servitude. Kane was a political opponent of future Governor Edward Coles who was a determined opponent of slavery. Kane County was strongly ANTI-SLAVERY. In the 1848 election it voted for Free Soil Party candidate former President Martin Van Buren over both Zachary Taylor and Sen. Lewis Cass, a pro-slavery Democrat. Cass carried the state, but Kane County made its stand clear. Isn’t it time for a change? How about Lincoln County?

  5. Kenneth Sepro, I’m all for bringing down statues of traitors of the United States and changing names of buildings/schools, etc. named after Confederates, but what Elias Kent Kane did seems minor compared to openly fighting a war against the US. You realize we also have Calhoun, Carroll, Clay, Crawford, Hancock, Henry, Marion, Marshall, Randolph, Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jackson, and several more counties in Illinois named after slaveowners?

  6. We could change the Jackson that county is named for to Jesse. Monroe could be Harriet Monroe. Lewis Carroll, Cassius Clay. This is fun!

Some other group wants to break away a section of Cook County and form a new county. Their choice of a name for the proposed new county is also “Lincoln County”. I wouldn’t hold my breath though. By state law, Cook County homeowners pay much lower property taxes then all other counties in the state. If they break away to form a new county, they would pay much more in property tax.
