The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced 614 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 6 additional confirmed deaths.
Champaign County: 1 female 70s, 1 male 80s
Cook County: 2 male 60s, 1 female 80s
DeKalb County: 1 female 90Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 147,865 cases, including 7,026 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 21,134 specimens for a total of 1,782,840. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from June 29 –July 5 is 2.6%.
Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IDPH is now reporting both confirmed and probable cases and deaths on its website. Reporting probable cases will help show the potential burden of COVID-19 illness and efficacy of population-based non-pharmaceutical interventions. See CDC definition of a probable case on its website. IDPH will update these data once a week.

Got tested at an IDPH site on Wednesday and didn’t get my results till today (Monday). Test really isn’t that good if you wait the better part of five to six days.
Illinois continues to show pretty good restraint on the number of new cases and hospitalizations. We aren’t perfect but I’d rather be in Illinois than a number of other states right now.

Our testing numbers continue to be encouraging and dis-spell the myth that if you test more you’ll see more positive results. The 2.6% figure on 30K or so tests is quite good particularly in comparison to some states that are seeing numbers as high as 25% on far fewer tests. The declining fatality rates are also encouraging. I would be cautious though to see if our move into Phase 4 doesn’t result in an uptick.

Kids need to get back to school. The uncertainty and lack of structure in their lives is taking a toll. I hope that Illinois’ encouraging/improved results coupled with mask wearing will make this possible soon.

As a teacher and from what I’ve seen out in the community it is going to be an uphill battle to get kids to wear masks at school.

That’s the root of the whole thing. Comments I’ve heard is that anything short of the old normal are completely unacceptable.

Kids tend to follow the example that adults set for them. If parents wear masks, that makes the uphill battle far less steep.

That is when the school calls the parents and tells them to come pick their kids up. No mask, no in person school. They can do it online. And when the parents can’t go to work because their kid won’t wear a mask, suddenly they will wear it very quickly.

Three biggest sources of conflict we will face:
1. wearing masks (required by state)
2. health certification (required by state)
3. spectators at athletic events (not required, and at this point sports are a million miles down at the bottom of my concerns)
If kids do not wear a mask- we are denying entry to school and district transportation. There will be people spoiling for a fight over this and we are not going to give it to them. We will redirect to the ISBE and disengage.
Same with visitors. They can only come into the office and only if they have a mask.
Generally speaking the kids are the easy part.

That’s how it would go in a perfect world. In this world, parents are suing ISBE and IDPH saying that masks and temperature checks are an infringements.

It’s a state university. The Governor should call the system chacellor and ask what the heck is going on and demand it be offered statewide and if they won’t do it then walk in and take it.

Is it a lack if interest in supplying it statewide or lack of ability to scale it up? I assumed it was the latter.

DeWitt and Piatt Counties don’t seem to be showing up on these updates. The local director appears to be a proponent of “herd immunity”. He hasn’t bothered to update the Facebook page for the counties either. Doesn’t seem to be taking this seriously at all. Perhaps the state needs to have a talk with him if it’s going to be up to local departments to enforce rules and regulations.

This is what courts are for. Get it settled and then we will all know the extent of our “rights” and act accordingly.

How can schools open up without testing students and all staff? Why would we send teachers and students into an environment that is on the high end of spreading the virus; enclosed spaces? To only talk masks is ridiculous without including testing and by ignoring testing, teacher and students are putting their lives on the line. Hey we opened school but we lost little Johnny or mrs. Smith or their family member. 76 children died in New York because of COVID 19. Parents and teachers should demand testing or no opening of schools.
