* Press release…
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that expiration dates for driver’s licenses/ID cards and license plate stickers have been extended an additional month – from Oct. 1, 2020, to Nov. 1, 2020. This new Nov. 1 extension also includes those who have July, August and September expiration dates. As a result, expired documents will remain valid until Nov. 1 so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities, especially during the current heat wave.
“Extending expiration dates until November 1 means people with an expired driver’s license, ID card or license plate sticker do not need to rush into a Driver Services facility immediately,” said White. “During this current heat wave, I would suggest residents consider delaying their visit to a facility. But if you must visit a facility, please come prepared to wait outside due to social distancing, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time.”
White continues to urge the public to consider using online services when possible instead of visiting a facility due to heavy customer volume. Customers who can conduct business online may go to www.cyberdriveillinois.com to take advantage of online services – such as renewing license plate stickers – from the comfort of their own home. People who conduct online transactions will avoid waiting in line at a facility.
White noted that online transactions continue to flourish, with June 2020 seeing an increase of 110 percent in online license plate sticker renewals when compared to June 2019.
Through July 31, Driver Services facilities are serving ONLY new drivers, customers with expired driver’s licenses/ID cards and vehicle transactions. Face masks are required. Customers who must visit a facility are asked to be patient due to heavy volume and prepared to wait outside in various types of weather. This is due to social distancing, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time.
In addition, customers who must visit a facility to renew their driver’s license or ID card are encouraged to first use the preregistration application at www.cyberdriveillinois.com, which will speed up their transaction while at the facility.
Governor JB Pritzker extended the Disaster Proclamation an additional month, which in turn extended the expirations for driver’s licenses/ID cards and vehicle registration stickers an additional month to Nov. 1.

Also good to remember that the REAL ID deadline has been extended to October 1, 2021.

For anyone in the executive branch, here’s an idea: I’m one of the fortunate ones, my work hasn’t been interrupted and I can afford to pay for my license plate sticker renewal and other costs. However I am not allowed to renew my license plates until I get an emissions test.
The worst governor in my lifetime eliminated all of the emissions testing locations in Chicago. Many of the suburban locations were closed for a while but I think they’ve reopened.
What’s keeping me from paying the SOS for this renewal isn’t my ability to pay, it’s the highly inconvenient prerequisite currently in place. I need to find the time to hike out to the suburbs to wait in a long line because there’s a huge backup since the whole process was shut down for a month or two.
If the state decouples the emissions test and the plate renewal I would gladly pay for my renewal now, getting the state some much needed additional funds, and get the emissions test once I can find the time to do so.
(Also it’s completely ridiculous that there are no emissions testing locations in the state’s largest city)

What about lien payoffs and handicap plate applications? It’s ridiculous to not have appointments. Or shift to evening hours in July and August.

Anyone know a good attorney? I feel that extending my sticker expiration through an unconstitutional extension of the Disaster Proclamation is an infringement on my freedom. It’s even worse than asking me to wear a mask. /s

In addition to completing paperwork on line they could control flow if they allow people to make appointments for upcoming visits.

I suspect the extension is not valid in Clay County. Or Orlando Park

The Rental agencies could be a problem - they require an unexpired license to rent a car…
Enterprise requirements
“Customers who reside in the United States, U.S. Territories, or Canada must present a valid, unexpired government-issued driver’s license which includes a photograph of the customer. Digital licenses are not accepted. The driver’s license must be valid for the entire rental period.

We’ll be able to get our boat trailer to Florida by Nov. 1st and avoid the leap in fee from $54 to $154.

==eliminated all of the emissions testing locations in Chicago==
I thought there were only two and neither were south of North Ave.
I had to get my emissions test recently in order to renew. I’m not even sure what they did because it seemed like they gave me a “pass” less than a minute after I exited my vehicle.
As for decoupling the renewal from the emissions test, I’m sure that would receive heavy push back from environmentalists.

boat trailer to Florida-
Wait a minute.
You’re driving hundreds of miles, one way, to a pandemic hot spot, to save 100 bucks?
Wow, no intelligence tests to own a boat, is there?

Went to SecState facility today to renew license sticker for car we haven’t driven since March.
Incredibly, it took just 3 minutes in the drive through lane.
Nice job, Sec. White

In the Pat Quinn era you could get an emissions check at your local Car-X or whatever, which was very convenient.
The timing of this is a bit awkward. Many are probably unaware of the hike in the vehicle registration fee. Do you want to inform them right before the election? I could see this being pushed back another month.

While it’s not much, the “convenience fee” for renewing online probably hurts the total number of people who use this option. Eliminate the fee for the duration.

You can get around the debit/credit card convenience fee by direct debit straight from your bank account (using your bank routing/account numbers, not plastic).

Does SOS also still offer sticker purchases/renewals at participating Banks, Credit Unions, and currency exchanges?
