The baton is officially being passed from Mitchell Trubisky to Nick Foles.
During his Monday press conference, Bears Head Coach Matt Nagy confirmed Foles would get the start at quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts after he led the Bears to comeback win against the Falcons yesterday.
And this isn’t a play-to-play, week-by-week thing. This is Foles’ job until further notice

The eye test. Foles is a better passer and game manager. He’s the better player and the offense is better with him under center.

Agree. Trubisky has only show inconsistency. Yes he has had some moments but it has been a rollercoaster ride with too many stomach churning dips. They need to see if Foles can be better and more consistent. I think if they have some consistency then the offense can be less “offensive”

ACC football, and the North Carolina program isn’t how you move up a draft to select a QB
A Chicago team drafted a player from North Carolina, it worked out well, of course it was basketball…

Misses the open receiver, then throws in double/triple coverage… poor vision.
Not a real leader by his performances, kinda like Jay Cutler, but without the funny memes.
Trubisky isn’t even a good “game manager” because his check downs are suspect as well.
Need some grit, Foles has that, and understanding about winning at this level too.

Trubisky routinely misses throws to open receivers. He also seems to throw often to the receiver with 2 or more defenders on him.

Voted agree but for diffrent reason. Foles has a nack for revealing a franchise QB that is not him. By end of year something will happen to him and a QB will appear from an unlikely place too permanently replace him.
You doubt me, look at every place he has been….

Ryan Pace has made some decent player personnel decisions during his tenure, but it wont matter. This one is the one people will remember for a long time.

Obviously “Tru” isn’t the Bears future. He’s supposed to be good people, and I wish him well, but obviously 3 TD’s in one quarter to come from behind is something Tru couldn’t do. Foals time has come to move the Bears forward. Tru had his time and his chances; he’s not a great QB and will never be.

Disagree. The season is too long to think we’ve seen the last of Mitch Trubisky. Foles didn’t exactly light it up right away, and his comeback came against 2nd and 3rd string DBs, just like Trubisky’s big comeback.
My guess is Foles will hit a rough patch, or maybe get injured, and Mitch will have his chance at a redemption story. That’s a better story line and it’s got to be the one Ryan Pace is counting on too.

Barry Rozner from the Daily Herald had a good article this morning about Foles vs. Trubisky.

The article pretty much reflects why I agree with going with Foles. The offense looked better whereas with Trubisky I never had a comfort level like ok no worries.
Rozner seems to think (and I agree) that Pace and Nagy have been seeing Trubisky through rose colored glasses and Trubisky’s limitations have held the offense and the Bears back.
Now that the Bears have a professional quarterback we will see what happens. But Foles is not a savior and is a journeyman quarterback and injury prone so Trubisky needs to improve and learn from Foles.

Nick Foles is a great human and a great QB. He absolutely deserves the starting job - which should not even be controversial after yesterday’s performance. Indeed I always knew this day would come even when Trubisky was announced as the starting QB. Philadelphia was crazy to let him go especially after running the greatest Super Bowl trick play of all time. I am all in for the Nick Foles era of Chicago sports.

It’s legitimately the only option Nagy has.
No one should be under any illusions about Foles — he too is inconsistent, he too will miss easy throws, and he is next to zero threat to run with the ball (which removes a dimension from the offense). He ain’t gonna put up a 95-plus passer rating each game.
But he has a grasp of defensive schemes that Trubisky has yet to demonstrate and he is less inconsistent, if such can be said. Trubisky displayed some “wow” moments in occasional plays, but never showed much growth outside of them. It’s a shame, he seems like a good guy. But he’s not proved to be an NFL starting QB.

omg, yes. (banned punctuation) Foles has zip on the ball but it is more accurate and softer in the hands of the receiver. he’s also more creative in his choices for a target given the play handed to him. the plays seem to develop more quickly. and the receivers seem more enthusiastic. coulda had Mahomes, coulda had Watson, glad Foles is here now.

Agree. Foles is a Super Bowl MVP and according to what I heard or read can expand the offensive playbook. That interception yesterday might have sealed the deal (didn’t catch too much postgame analysis).

Agreed. Biscuit just doesn’t have the mental part of the job down enough to justify keeping him on the field, and he would have been benched a lot sooner if Pace hadn’t drafted him so high. Foles is better at pre-snap adjustments, better at reading defenses, makes better throws with linemen in his face and is better at telling the lineman where the blitz is coming from. Last play is a perfect example, he recognized a zero blitz and adjusted the blocking scheme, allowing him to throw the ball to Miller where he knew there would be no coverage. Biscuit has proven time and again that he can’t do any of that stuff, like when he (once again) didn’t recognize a zone defense and forced that awful throw to Graham which resulted in an interception.

Trubisky has been given more than enough opportunities to prove himself. The Bears may not have one off the top-rated offensive lines, but nobody makes Mitch miss but Mitch.

Mitch was given a final chance to prove he’s the guy. No more waiting on him to figure it out. Put the guy on the field that can give you the best chance to win a game.

Trubisky has never been able to read a defense…misses open receivers and throws into double or triple coverage. Foles will do fine until we draft our next “franchise quarterback”

Biggest no brainer of the season. Although a moment to give a tip of the hat to both Foles & Trubisky. They both seem like good guys and have handled the situation very professionally.

Trubisky had no real ability to read defensive cover schemes. Wasn’t a pocket passer and his ability to throw on the run got him hurt last year and has made him tentative since.
But don’t worry, Rick Mirer was the 2nd pick, with many of the same inconsistency and problems, he was able to collect a paycheck for 11 years. Mitch will be fine.

If you really think the defense gives the Bears a Super Bowl window, then you should go with a vet. I can’t blame Mitch too much because he didn’t draft himself. He also walked into a tough situation because Pace passed on Mahomes and Watson and Jay Cutler caused many Bear fans psychological trauma. I hope Mitch gets a chance to develop at his rate (like old QB’s used to).

But, make no mistake about it - Mitch will be back. Foles will get injured at some point during the season. Bears O line doesn’t pass protect very well, and Foles isn’t very mobile.

Let me start off by saying that Trubisky is a really nice kid who’s failures aren’t from a lack of effort. But, considering what the Bears did to get him and watching QBs like Mahomes tearing up the league doesn’t help his cause. But, just when you think he might finally be getting it, he’ll do something to take that confidence away. His last interception was inexcusable and a mistake a NFL QB can’t make. With that being said, I really hope the kid does make it in the NFL. Just a shame because he is a guy who we can cheer for…

I’ll add that I thought it showed a lot of class that despite being benched, he was engaging with his teammates and did attending the press conference yesterday. He very easily could have acted like a baby and not shown up, but he accepted what happened and tried to make the best of it.

Not surprised by any of this given what the Bears paid Foles and the fact that they didn’t extend Trubisky. You had to figure that he was on a short leash. We’ve seen Trubisky’s upside and it looks like he’s capable of flashes of brillance followed by longer periods of ineffectiveness. Even in the two wins to start the season he never showed the ability to put together a complete game. We’ll see how Foles fairs. Chicagoans are notoriously impatient with their quarterbacks. Largely because we rarely have one.

Voted yes. Mitch might one day develop into the type of QB Pace envisioned but the Bears can’t afford to let him learn on the job. Observing from the sidelines may be a blessing for him. He’s had plenty of opportunities to establish himself on the field.

Agree but not because I agreed with the decision at the time. Nagy has never really done Mitch a ton of favors - RPOs, rollouts and designed runs have been used in pretty limited fashion, and that line is not in the upper half of the league (Pace’s fault). But you can’t have the guy missing a wide open Miller by 5 yards for what would’ve been a touchdown either. Hasn’t really shown the ability to locate the long ball consistently and clearly doesn’t get great reads and go through his progressions.
But, Foles isn’t going to be much different. More moderated, less all over the place, probably fewer sacks. But he’s inconsistent as well, doesn’t have a cannon and is prone to his own errors. There’s a reason the Bears are his sixth team (eagles are two of those).
But but, I think Nagy made the right call today because you just can’t go back and forth, back and forth. Nick will play til he gets hurt (he ALWAYS gets hurt), and Mitch will be back,. Hopefully he learns a little something about using his seriously gifted abilities in the interim

When Atlanta had the ball, Foles was shown on the sidelines going up and down the bench, instructing each offensive player with a sense of urgency. This is what good QBs do. He will be better with a week of reps, but the Bears still need to show they can beat a good team.

You just can’t have an average quarterback. Maybe he will improve, maybe this system isn’t right for him, maybe, maybe, maybe. Foles has done this before and done it well. He isn’t perfect and is prone to injury, but he is an improvement.
