"Erfweiler, one of the most beautiful villages in Germany, is nestled in an idyllic valley basin, surrounded by castles, rocks and forests."
— Rich Miller (@capitolfax) October 21, 2020
I used to live not too far from there.
Anyway, keep it local and remain polite and calm. Thanks.

She was a Treasure not a treasurer

When I was a teen, I had the good luck to spend an entire summer with a German family who lived in a Black Forest village. Thanks for triggering some wonderful memories.

Oh, RNUG, hitting me right in the taste buds. This is an authentic German restaurant that is an absolute treasure. Owned by real Germans, most desserts are made by Peter’s (owner) wife. Best German food I have ever had in the USA. I miss that place, used to live close by and eat and drink there all the time. Great imported beers on tap and the applecorn is off the charts.

RUNG,
Still recall stumbling on that place while driving to Danville with my son to go to the Indy 500.
Still blows my mind that it is there.

I worked for UPS in Nürnberg for a year. Loved living in Germany. I’d go back in a heartbeat if I could.

I often take Route 54 to see my uncle, so I’ve driven through Gibson City literally hundreds of times and I never knew until today that they had a German restaurant.
Thanks (exclamation point)

The Kankakee Republican Central committee has upgraded (more like downgraded) it’s upcoming “Back the Blue Vote Red” rally by adding the “Pritzker S….” theme. Stay classy my friends.

I have traveled all over Illinois in my time working for the state. Never heard of Gibson City let alone the Bayern Stube. This is now on my road trip schedule. Thanks RNUG.

When Covid is just a memory, we’ll need to organize a Cap Fax field trip.
I’m of German descent on both sides as far back as I can trace the family tree, and I love that place … just don’t get there very often.

If Manfred gets his way, the expanded MLB playoffs and runners on second rule for extra-inning games, both introduced this shortened season, will be here to stay:

Love me a road trip. An aunt was from Bavaria, grandparents Hamburg. The aunt from Bavaria owned a restaurant in Wisconsin. I have yet to find a place that makes Sauerbraten and spaetzle like she made. That said you can’t beat a great schnitzel with red cabbage.

Another example of Emmy-winning journalism (sarcasm intended) on Channel 20 last night. They aired a story about “some people worrying” that the new Portillos in Springfield’s Parkway Pointe shopping center (at the former site of Walgreens) will bring more traffic to that already-congested and poorly designed roads into that shopping center.
Sam Madonia mentioned this on his show this morning with a “We Told You So” type of reaction. Parkway Pointe has been congested for over 20 years traffic-wise. I try to avoid shopping there when possible and I also will never go to Portillo’s when it opens (for both pandemic and traffic reasons).
Then again, when Veterans in southwest Springfield was built 40 or so years ago, I don’t think planners and IDOT envisioned the immense growth of the city’s west side, and Chatham, to the levels of today.

So I did a quick Google search, and then a Google map.
Erfweiler is about 15 miles from the German town some of my ancestors migrated from.
The bucket list has a space for genealogy field trips. Looking like I might need to add another address to the list.
