*** UPDATED x1 *** You missed an Oberweis loss, Rick

Posted in:

* Pearson

Democratic U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood won her bid for a second term Thursday, narrowly defeating Republican challenger Jim Oberweis in the west and north suburban and exurban 14th Congressional District, The Associated Press declared. […]

It was the second time Oberweis, 74, failed in a bid for the seat, losing in 2008. It joins a string of losses at the federal level for the investment and dairy magnate that included unsuccessful bids for the U.S. Senate in 2002, 2004 and 2014. Oberweis also lost a 2006 bid for governor and was unsuccessful in a past bid for the state GOP chairmanship.

As a result of his bid for Congress, Oberweis could not seek reelection to the state Senate seat he has held since 2013. Jeanette Ward, a Republican seeking to replace Oberweis in Springfield, conceded her race against Democrat Karina Villa.

This was actually the third time Oberweis lost a 14th Congressional District race. This year, the 2008 general election and the 2008 special general election on March 8. The special was prompted when Denny Hastert resigned from Congress. It was the first time a Democrat had won the seat since the Great Depression.

*** UPDATE *** Sigh…

U.S. Rep. @LaurenUnderwood (IL-14) officially won her re-election bid against @JimOberweis yesterday by a margin of ~4,600 votes now that they’re all counted.

That didn’t stop Oberweis, who prematurely declared victory last week, from heading to D.C. for new member orientation. https://t.co/cTn2ogCS2H pic.twitter.com/3BORtAnwJY

  2. The saddest thing is that he maybe could have pulled off a win for his State Senate seat…the one position he has ever won. An absolutely bizarre man.

  3. Did the Democrats gain in the state Senate then?
    Nationally they lost about 69 state house races out of 3500 but they had gained 350 in 2018.

    Is he just a rejection junkie?

  5. Also, with this margin: Sue Rezin would have won.

    Nice party-building there, Jim.

  7. Jim Oberweis… making Spanky the Clown less of a loser.

    This one is most tasty, declaring victory only to lose… again.

    A bright spot this election season, Ives and Oberweis, and their racist thoughts rejected.

  8. === Sue Rezin would have won.===

    Welp, when you can win a primary…

    Rezin is a Raunerite, voted with Rauner to hurt Illinois.

    Neither woulda been better. Why reward someone who thought hurting social services, higher education, the state…

    Hope Rezin enjoys the Senate.

  12. Thanks . I have to correct my national figure it’s a gain of 79 in about 5000 seats. For state Senate a Republican gain of 2. I got these maps including Illinois from a Chaz Nuttycombe twitter.

  13. Calling out again for an Ives/Oberweis ticket in ‘22. I’ll even pitch in twenty bucks for it. We’ll all be in need of a good laugh by then.

  17. @Not a Billionaire

    Dem losses in state house races around the country is the most under reported political story of this cycle. Much more consequential than Pelosi’s failures. GOP will maintain the upper hand in map making in several key states.

  18. If I were a Democrat I would finance his next Republican campaign

    Comment by DuPage Saint Friday, Nov 13, 20 @ 11:24 am

  19. The fact that it was even this close with the worst candidate in the Republican field tells me Rezin could have won. That said, should make for an interesting map with Marie Newman (La Grange), Sean Casten (Downers Grove) and Lauren Underwood (Naperville) all living close to one another. Obie, please head to Bonita Springs. Someone please draft a Retirement Resolution; maybe he’ll get the hint.

  20. ===Chaz Nuttycombe twitter===

    LOL

    Stay far, far away from that guy’s stuff. He flat-out stated that Amy Grant was the most vulnerable Republican in the Illinois House.

    Hilarious.

  21. === It was the first time a Democrat had won the seat since the Great Depression. ===

    Yes, but … Given redistricting, it’s hard to discuss chain of Reps. for a district subject to changing areas in an accurate manner IMHO. Much of the area encompassing the 14th District used to be in the 15th District. From my prospective as an Auroran and former Auroran, I’m going to start the chain with the Congresswoman I first met at an Aurora Sons of Norway meeting, Charlotte T. Reid, R. She was replaced by Cliffard D. Carlson, R. Then came Leslie C. Arends, R, redistricted from the 17th. He was replaced by one-term D, Tim Lee Hall. Tom Corcoran, R, beat Hall and gave up his seat to take on Sen. Percy in the GOP primary. Long-time State SenatorJohn Grotberg, R, was next. After his passing there was our infamous Speaker. He was replaced by Bill Foster, D. Randy Hultgren, R, defeated Foster (Foster was later elected in a different district) and Lauren Underwood, D, beat Hultgren.

    As far as Oberweis, his politics is bad and hope he now focuses his time in Florida, but his ice cream is good.

    Comment by Norseman Friday, Nov 13, 20 @ 11:51 am

  22. This strikes me as high-risk / high-relative reward for the Dems.

    The relative-reward was a less nuclear candidate, might well have beaten Underwood, in this campaign climate. I’m guessing Oberweis’s baggage was just too much to overlook for some district voters.

    The high risk of course was, he mighta won.

    Anyways, Lauren Underwood is awesome and this was one of the brighter moments for the DC Democrats this cycle, and I hope Springfield draws her a safer district for 2022.

  23. Waiting for the day when we get the “you won’t have Jim Oberweis to kick anymore” speech.

    Comment by Groundhog Day Friday, Nov 13, 20 @ 11:59 am

  24. Never had heard of him just saw the maps . I agree Roman it’s a problem with GA TX and FL on maps. Btw this guy blamed the dems for spending too much on some Senate races . I don’t get the connection.

    Comment by Not a Billionaire Friday, Nov 13, 20 @ 12:05 pm

  25. - Norseman -, dropping the knowledge.

    Wait till the new map locks in Casten, Underwood, and Krishnamoorthi… and Schneider seemingly having his district on “lock” mode, the severe damage, first by Rauner, then by Trump, will keep these seats trending blue with terrible after terrible candidates lining up to be defeated.

    Or…

    The Republicans can decide to reset, regroup, and recruit, and try to be relevant.

    It’s like “no one warned them”…

    No sympathy for Rezin. Rezin was part of the problem too, will Rezin still be part of the problem is the question.

    Oberweis should move on, for everyone’s sake.

    Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Nov 13, 20 @ 12:05 pm

  26. Milk Dud was able to be a nominee for Congress twice. He beat Chris Lauzen in the February 2008 primary for the 2008 special election. IIRC it was a special primary. The field was much more watered down for the 2020 primary, and Sue Rezin might’ve won in a less crowded field.

  27. =Oberweis is the Lars “America First” Daly of the Republican party.=

    Then where’s his Uncle Sam suit?

  28. Not to get off Topic but Proft lost another race that on surface dosent seem big but is. Dan Patlak Cook County Board of Review is now down to Tammy Wendt by 4000 votes. She spent approximately 35k to Patlak 835,000$. Proft worked hard on this race and one of his main guys is all but done.
