8,922 new confirmed and probable cases, 140 additional deaths, 5,953 hospitalized, 1,146 in ICU, 11.9 percent case positivity rate, 14.2 percent test positivity rate, Illinois surpasses 11,000 deaths

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 8,922 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 140 additional deaths.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 606,771 cases, including 11,014 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 103,569 specimens for a total 9,359,227. As of last night, 5,953 in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 1,146 patients were in the ICU and 547 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from November 11 – November 17, 2020 is 11.9%. The preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity from November 11 – November 17, 2020 is 14.2%.

  1. One day doesn’t mean much, but I’ll take sub 10k new cases. Hopefully we’re leveling off, or even coming down off the peak here.

  2. Our huge spike came about 10 days after that bout of cold and rainy weather, now things are leveling off after the 7 days of 70 degree november weather (people could go hang out outside again). Really shows how bad things are going to get this winter if people don’t take things seriously.

  3. We hit 10,000 deaths a day or two after the election. So, another 1,000 in just two weeks. It is just staggering.

  4. Looking at the age of those dying and the resistance of many young and middle aged people to a few simple steps to stop the spread of COVID, it is clear that they have found a way to get their inheritance early. You can hardly blame them. 🙂

    it is not possobile to see exponential growth in infectios unless you are well into multiple generations of tansmission.

    The surge in transmission in Illinois appers to have begun Labor Day weekend, and started to relax in the second half of October.

    You have to think of COVID surges like a tsunami, a big wave that starts with a tremor far off shore. The quake is long, long over when the wave hits shore.

    The Thanksgiving Wave won’t peak 7-10 days after thanksgiving, but during the two weeks around Christmas and New Year.

    The tier 3 mitigations announced yesterday are less about ending the current wave than trying to lower the number of infected people going into thanksgiving so that Christmas is not horrific.

  6. Finally a smidge of good news. It’s a sad statement of this pandemic that 8900 cases and 11.9% positivity passes for good news around here, but it’s all about the trend and this one is definitely an improvement.

    Unfortunately, deaths are a lagging indicator with this disease so it’s not surprising that that number is so high and will probably continue like that for a while.

  13. @OK - Cases that began around halloween just started showing up this week but will not peak until the end of the month.

    Most of the state was blessed with nice weather, which meant private Halloween parties could be outside and socially distant. Honestly do not expect halloween spike to be that bad.
