Its called an outbreak. It follows a bell shaped curve. None of these “mitigations” seem to change that. So why do them?
Comment by Aron Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 3:29 pm
@Aron - Please take your alternative science somewhere else. If you don’t know enough about mitigations to answer your own question, you should be on Facebook.
Comment by Thomas Paine Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 3:34 pm
Gee, the death rates are higher where all the folk (around me especially) refuse to wear masks and all the bars are still open? What a shock…. It is absolutely crazy the amount of people who are going out of their way to be willingly and spectacularly ignorant when a big part of the solution is completely obvious.
Comment by Ducky LaMoore Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 3:35 pm
No wonder Bailey and DeVore looked so red. It’s the blood they’ve been soaking in.
Comment by Precinct Captain Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 3:37 pm
People in small towns and rural areas disproportionately refuse to wear masks, and one of the unfortunate trends we have seen so far is that even if you are exposed but wearing a mask, your viral load is lower. Places with more masked individuals have more mild cases on average.
Viral load matters. Wear your mask.
Comment by BilboSwaggins Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 3:39 pm
I am no Aron but while masks are a part of the equation, I suspect that the quality of medical care in rural areas might also be a factor.
Comment by Parler the impaler Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 3:45 pm
Downstate Illinois and this need to flaunt the needed steps to save lives is now seeing the trailing indicator, death, in such tragic ways.
If death can’t sway, and ‘Merica and Freedom means seeing these deaths as acceptable, how can we all work to fight this virus, the real enemy, not the enemy that is trying to save lives, the mask wearing.
These are deaths that are part and parcel in concert with facebook posts of Wintour, in league with lawsuits by Bailey, the rhetoric of Halbrook, the zest for family power of Miller, the hubris of Caulkins.
Make no mistake, those Eastern Bloc folks who clamor for leadership, when you show poor judgement during a pandemic, and your region shows spiking due to the choices you’d like to see… your leadership and wants aren’t helping this.
Let’s hope some realization of the dangers start to be understood
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 3:46 pm
The mitigations are not working because:
1) the GOP has made a concentrated effort to undermine mitigation efforts;
2) people are not taking the pandemic seriously or don’t believe it’s real;
3) people don’t want to curtail their social activities;
4) in addition to the perfidy of one party, we have elected and appointed officials who are too cowardly to enforce mitigation measures; and
5) people are tired of complying with mitigation.
Mitigation works when people comply.

Looks like these health disparities and death rates may be more related to income and education than race…makes sense.

==Mask or no mask I’m still supporting my local bars. Yet to catch covid. Pretty decent specials these days.==
If you do catch it, could you please avoid the healthcare system? Those of us who are doing what we are supposed to may need healthcare in case our appendix bursts, or we have an accident, or some other emergency happens.
Comment by AC Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 3:58 pm
AC, sure. Do I need to sign any paperwork?

It can be discouraging.. its a virus…. its not red vs blue, or urban vs rural When people get together in groups less then 6 feet apart without masks bad things happen. Use some sense, wear a mask

Some people got excited about Joe Biden winning in Chicago. Even Lori Lightfoot says you sometimes have to let off steam and celebrate on MSNBC. Even JB was seen going to a celebration. This is a strange virus. There seems to be no fear of transmission as social justice gatherings.

=== There seems to be no fear of transmission as social justice gatherings.===
If your ignorance was remotely true, folks like the governor woulda been maskless.
Many didn’t. Use the Google. The pictures say otherwise.

There was a recent USA Today article from South Dakota about people as they were dying, were denying their diagnosis of covid19.

It’s like… ignorance… and reading comprehension… do go hand in hand.
Is urban code for anything, or is your vocabulary limited to words 5 letters or less?
Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 4:25 pm
If everyone would just social distance, Michigan Avenue might not have faced the property damage it did. Rules are for little people.

We’re talking about deaths in rural Illinois, not racial divisions that you must “think” are contributing to those rural deaths.
Thanks for letting me know.

Seeing JB walking to a Biden celebration was inspirational. A man of science leading a progressive city. JB knows progressive mass meetings are just fine.

Gathering in church bad. Granny’s funeral bad. Weddings in church bad. Wal-Mart good. Pot dispensary good. MAGA meeting bad. Joe Biden celebration great. George Floyd rally great. Women’s march great. School bad. High schools sports bad. Concerts bad. Bizarre virus.

I apologize for leaving out the best: in Nevada church bad; renting room in casino for church services just fine.
Comment by Tom Keen's Property Lawyer Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 4:52 pm
It’s almost like folks were given a chance to fix this themselves and still managed to royally mess it up. Your rallies went on unhindered, nobody stopped church services… And these deaths are a result of that. Stop blaming Chicago for your community’s failings.
Sincerely, a down stater.

If I see one more meme about Walmart being safe I may lose my mind.
Nobody ever said it was safe. Many small towns including my hometown it is literally the only grocery store. People need to be able to buy food. Going to Walmart is a risk but literally not eating until covid is over is not a choice.
Comment by all luck Wednesday, Nov 18, 20 @ 4:58 pm
Let’s look at the mouth breathing, hopefully with a mask;
“Gathering in church bad.
Granny’s funeral bad.
Weddings in church bad.”
The gatherings, inside, and singing, those are putting others, that’s others, at risk.
Weddings, sadly funerals, and worship can be done via Zoom.
Look at “The Sermon on the Mount” about the necessity for groups and prayer.
Wal-Mart good.
Pot dispensary good.
Food, and medicinal items, even if many others see both as recreational, are still necessaries. Because rural areas only have Wal-Mart, you want them to starve?
MAGA meeting bad.
Joe Biden celebration great.
… and yet neither are stopped. In actuality, both were put on without incident.
George Floyd rally great.
Women’s march great.
Hatred towards people or color or angst towards a gender is a personal issue. I can’t help with that, but I wish you luck all the same.
School bad.
High schools sports bad.
Concerts bad.
Teachers, custodians, administrators, coaches, referees, umpires, officials, even the ridiculousness of parents needing to live thru their kids, events like these are unable to be safe
I cite the NBA, NHL bubbles, and the NCAA having this necessary need to have its own “March Madness” a term coined in Illinois, is taking a bubble for its entire basketball tournament, 64+ teams… and you want sports?
Did I cover it all, can we discuss the downstate crisis and trying to get downstate safer?

While I agree that both underlying health issues (age, obesity other aggravating factors for corona) as well as health systems availability is worse in rural areas, this was all known. This was all published. If anything rural people ought to be being MORE careful of theirs and their neighbor’s health than anyone else.
