The Illinois State Board of Elections on Friday certified the results of the Nov. 3 General Election, which featured the highest statewide turnout since 1992 and set records for total number of votes cast and total registered voters.
Despite being held amid the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 General Election saw 6,098,729 voters cast ballots, exceeding the 2016 total of 5,666,118, which was a record at the time. There were a record 8,364,099 active registered voters eligible to participate in the election, surpassing the 2016 record of 8,029,847.
Turnout was 72.92 percent, the highest statewide voter turnout since the 1992 general Election’s 78.24 percent and more than 2 percentage points higher than in 2016.

As the coronavirus pandemic intensified following the March 17 primary, the Illinois General Assembly passed an election bill that enacted many special provisions to ensure a safe General Election for voters and poll workers. Chief among these was an emphasis on voting by mail that resulted in a record number of Illinois voters casting ballots without entering a polling place.
Likewise, promotion of early voting to mitigate potential Election Day crowding led to an unprecedented number of votes cast during Illinois’ 40-day early voting period.Based on pre-election ballot reports, SBE estimates that the total statewide vote was split roughly evenly between early voting, voting by mail and in-person voting on Election Day, each accounting for about 2 million votes. Board staff is currently collecting data from the state’s 108 local election authorities that will provide a more precise summary of voting trends in the 2020 general election. That data will be submitted to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission in early 2021 for inclusion in the Election Administration and Voting Survey. […]
“The strong turnout in this election is a testament to the voters of Illinois and the state’s 108 local election authorities,” said SBE Executive Director Steve Sandvoss. “Amid a historic public health crisis that presented a formidable obstacle, the election community statewide rose to the occasion.”

The Fair Tax failed, the Yes vote only received 46.73% support. Because of the low dropoff rate it could have passed if the Yes vote had reached 53.10% support (assuming my math is correct).

As 72 percent is clearly higher than 100 percent, it shows that this election was stolen.

My precinct had almost 86% turnout and the ward around 83%. And I always wonder which of my neighbors didnt bother and why?

Six months ago, the Fair Tax getting 50% seemed like a no-brainer and the only question was whether it would break whatever that 50-60% threshold was.

Being a victim to bad candidates and poor campaigns isn’t going to change what Illinois was a mere 4 years ago, 6 years ago…
It’s tiring to hear the “it’s a Blue state” when the way Raunerites and the likes of an Ives or Oberweis are the choices.

Amen.
Illinois governors have mostly been from the ILGOP in my lifetime. Including Pritzker there have been 4 democrats and 5 republicans. But the office belonged to the GOP from 1977-2003. Fully on half of my life.
The fact that there are no state-wide republicans is entirely about the ILGOP and how that party has strayed from what the people of Illinois are looking for. The maps shared yesterday tell an interesting story as well.
Maybe the ILGOP needs to take a civics lesson and learn that people, not land, vote in Illinois.

I volunteered to be an election judge for the first time this year to give our precinct’s normal “over 65 year old” crew a year off. 2/3rds of the signature cards in our spindles showed people had voted before Nov. 3rd, and we didn’t have anyone come try to vote twice. People who had been sent a mail-in ballot but decided to vote in person did not complain when we asked them to go home and retrieve that ballot so we could spoil it. Overall, everyone seemed very polite and super enthusiastic to have their voices heard this year. Long day for the judges, but very rewarding to see democracy in action. Very orderly process; wish everyone could see how the sausage it made.

The internal poll released by the Gov’s team had the Fair Tax at 55, had that been right it would have passed.

It’s highly commendable that lower income people did not shirk their responsibility to protect the vulnerable top 3% of Illinois taxpayers.
Way to go, have-nots, in protecting the generous 3% haves from the greedy 97% would-be beneficiaries of a graduated income tax.
