In light of the violence at our nation’s Capitol, and with protests mounting at other state capitols, Governor Pritzker has ordered the State Police to increase security around Illinois’ state Capitol, as well as the Bank of Springfield center.
The National Guard and State Police are in constant communication with their counterparts around Illinois and in other states to monitor activity and any threats.
The Governor and his administration are closely monitoring the violence in the nation’s Capitol and will make all needed state resources available to our partners.
The governor’s chief of staff has reportedly been in contact with the four legislative leaders’ chiefs of staff as well.

Americans and the world watched as Trump urged his gangs of supporters to violence. They stormed the United States Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of the Electoral College and thus the will of the American people. There was no widespread electoral fraud as Trump’s own Departments of Justice and Homeland Security have confirmed. President Kristina Zahorik of the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association (IDCCA) released the following statement:
“This is an attack on our democracy. It is un-American. The actions of these riotous gangs are shameful, as is Trump’s silence on ending it. Trump and those attempting to stop the will of the American people must be held accountable. These actions, encouraged by Donald Trump, are nothing less than treasonous. This is an attempt at a coup d’etat, plain and simple. Attorney General Kwame Raoul today released the following statement condemning mob violence in and around the U.S. Capitol.
“I will always support the right of the people to express their opinions through peaceful protest, as guaranteed by the First Amendment, but let us be clear: what we have witnessed today at the U.S. Capitol is not peaceful, it is not constitutionally-protected, and it is not a ‘protest.’ This violence is a criminal attack on our democracy.
“The individuals who engaged in such criminal acts should not only be cleared from the Capitol so that Congress can resume its duties, but should be held fully accountable under the law.

Sharper legal minds than what I bring to the table should be exploring what means we have to remove from office the members of our congressional delegation who have supported this conspiracy against our nation.

There’s no call to those who incited, no call to leadership that called for the rallies.
What’s missing is that it appears to be written as though those at the Capitol are on their own to these ends.

I was heartened today to see McConnell stand up for democracy, and the Vice President too for proceeding with accepting the states’ electors. But this Frankenstein monster has been nurtured by many in the GOP. The Republican Party may be finished. Democrats won Georgia today and flipped the Senate. In Illinois, the collar counties and Chicago suburbs have pretty much gone Democratic. Demographics are not going to get friendlier to a political party that courts with/supports racism and fascism.

Republican U.S. Senators and Republican U.S. House Members that are still loyal to the Constitution of the United States of American should introduce articles of Impeachment and see that Trump is removed from office should the 25th Amendment fail to be invoked.

The 25th Amendment is likely no help; The President must be found “unable” to perform his duties, not “unwilling”. And he cannot be removed from office at this time. The “unable” is a medial judgment, and that requires examinations/tests to make such a conclusion, and review by a panel under Fed. law. Right now it does not appear to meet the unable requirement.

Nonsense. Section IV of the 25th Amendment only requires that Vice President Pence shows us he has a spine. The clock is ticking for Republicans. Decide today, right now. Condemn this now or forever be tarred with the stain of insurrection.
Kinzinger made his choice. Mary Miller made hers. Now it’s up to the rest of the Republican Congressional enablers. The Joint Session will reconvene tonight to finish its work. You have until then to pick a side.

I want to start by saying I always considered myself an Independent. Until recently I never even paid attention to whether someone was a Republican, Democrat, or Spotted Moose. I have always voted for who I thought was best. Or who scared me the least. But I had CNN playing while organizing my filing today and was absolutely appalled by what went down. It actually scared me. All I kept thinking was “Is this what the Republican Party is coming to?”
I did come to the realization that, just as there were Raunerites, there are Trumpians. They are not true Republicans; at least, I hope not. I would like to have hope that the Party can redeem itself in the next 4 years once it is free of Trump. But I fear the people who follow someone just because of what Party they represent, never questioning what they say. The people who stormed the Capitol were not Republicans. They were something else, and I refuse to believe we can’t all improve.

No one is required to be a member of the Republican Party.
Any member could have left the GOP after Trump secured their party’s nomination for the presidency.

Lincoln - what do think the people caught in the middle of these city riots had to do? Today was bad, but so was every other riot this year. Now all of the sudden some of you people don’t like it anymore.
As bad as today was, Congress is already back in session. If this was some sort of coup attempt, there is no way they would be back in session a couple of hours later.
