So apparently some state buildings are going to be moving around in Springfield other than the mall move.
Probably time to follow the money on these moves because the state isn’t saving money by doing it.

How is everyone doing in the snow? so far, not as much as expected and perhaps more wet than the weather talking heads predicted. snowblower had to be refreshed multiple times so far today.

We haven’t gotten a lot of snow yet. This is northside Chicago, not quite on the lakefront but close enough the lake effects the weather.

Read this morning a school system near Galesburg is having a snow day, even though they’re doing remote learning. Good for them.

Up here in northwest Illinois it is blowing hard. Accumulation between zero and thirty inches. Going to be fun plowing through the drifts. I’ll probably wait until tomorrow.

We have a skim of ice with snow on top of it here in the woods in central IL. I just salted the sidewalk.

Nothing like a good shovel in the morning to get the juices going and some exercise. Still snowing but most of it may be over.

My phone started blowing up at 5:30am with texts and a robo call telling me my kids school was going to be open today. Seems to me a better approach would need to do nothing if school is happening and sound the alarm bells if they are not going to have school. Between that and shoveling, my morning is off to a crummy start.
For the weather nerds, we have 4-5 inches on the ground in my neighborhood.
Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Jan 26, 21 @ 8:48 am
We have an inch or two. It’s gorgeous…for those who don’t have to go out. The Ask An Expert post yesterday was great. Thanks to all for the pension education class.

yesterday there were criticisms of some of my comments regarding the increase of teenage carjackings. Today its reported that a 73 year old man was carjacked at 2 am. I was accused of trolling. So which is it people, teenagers off on a frolic with no weapons or an emerging menace to society? 5 children, (presumably) who will be remanded to the care of their parents in juvenile court or a roving band threatening violent acts against the elderly. A property crime covered by insurance or the loss of a vital lifeline to work, food, medicine. We must decide who we are as a society. Either these children are in need of intervention, support and guidance (up to age 25) or they are old enough to know better and should be held accountable up to and including criminal punishment. There are two paradigms at war with each other and one must prevail.
Comment by depressed in politics Tuesday, Jan 26, 21 @ 9:02 am
depressed in politics - if these kids carjack in the Commonwealth of Virginia, they are looking at 8-10 years in prison as juvenile carjackers can be tried as adults. I am not suggesting that Illinois adopt the same policies, but given the seriousness of the crime, in no way depressed in politics should be accused of trolling. If you want to see how this works, read Dwayne Betts book about his incarceration at age 16 for carjacking in Virginia Dwayne is not at Yale Law School, and it is rare to have so much into serious juvenile crime.

Still snowing in north DuPage this morning. I have nowhere to be so am drinking coffee and appreciating the beauty of it all. Until it’s time to shovel the driveway.

Today is saddest, one year anniversary of the devastating plane crash taking the lives of Kobe, his daughter and six others. Take a moment for them today.

whoa, now the snow is going. @depressed in politics, yes, the crime should be take more seriously. per TR’s link to the Tribune editorial yesterday, Sen. Cunningham’s legislation should get another look. use a gun in a carjack, I’m not feeling sorry for you, kid.

Adams tollroad was partially snow-packed. Kennedy was salted and plowed down to water. Thanks IDOT.
Comment by DEE Tuesday, Jan 26, 21 @ 9:32 am
To the snow; 2-3 inches in Dolton/Riverdale/Harvey area as of 9:41 am. Not snowing now. To the carjacking posts: I can only hope some of these budding Rhodes Scholars doing the crime video themselves being shot by a law-abiding citizen defending themselves against a forcible felony (not merely a property crime; it’s a form of armed robbery). But that goes against the Social Justic narrative of “it’s only a vehicle”. Not if you threaten someone with a weapon; it’s a crime against a person.

Reading what it cost to rent the BOS for House session reminds me there is a great state owned building that is across the street from the Statehouse and Stratton Offices that is big enough to hold session and would be rent free.
If only the State Armoury hadn’t been allowed to fall into an absolute shameful state of repair and neglect.
Comment by Give Me A Break Tuesday, Jan 26, 21 @ 9:47 am
== what it cost to rent the BOS ==
Yes … but us Springfield / Sangamon County residents that voted against building the convention center appreciate the subsidy to its operating budget.

Was standing at end of driveway, having just finished clearing the windrow of snow at the end of my driveway this morning with city snow plow driver plowed me in again. The lazy driver didn’t have the courtesy god gave a turnip to reach down to adjust the angle of the plow. Made 3 calls to municipality. Have yet to have a response.
Comment by Huh? Tuesday, Jan 26, 21 @ 10:11 am
Look deeper at the BOS rental numbers - much of that money was spent on the electronics and video support for session. Not on the rental of the building.

About 41/2″ up here in Fox Lake area. Local plows haven’t been out yet which is unseal as they are better then the county or state about removal. Anyway, finished the reading of papers/blogs and coffee so guess I will be going out to shovel. Then out on the trails with the snowmobile to meet up with some friends and dinner since some reopening has happen.

I’ve heard that EPA in the old Sangamo Electric building (next to Lanphier High) will eventually be moving due to the building being in the path of the Railroad relocation project in Springfield (moving 3rd street tracks to 10th).
I also wonder if Iles Park Place (near 6th and Ash) is also going to be affected as the building is near the 10th street corridor.
Are those the bulidings you’ve heard will have agency moves, or are there others you have heard about?
