Death number is high but not unusual for mid-week reporting. Positivity rate headed in right direction as moving average of cases decline. It seems we are past the holiday get-together surge. Let’s hope Super Bowl parties and Valentine’s Day don’t send us back in wrong direction.

Does the vaccine have any substantial effect on the current numbers or is it still too early?

Any potential future will judge our pandemic response…so poorly…as an abject and shameful failure.

I think it’s too early to say vaccines have had a substantial effect. Health care workers are in process (or have just received) their 2nd dose. After that, I believe it takes a few weeks to a month to build up all antibodies. Not entirely sure on timeline though.

Roughly 50% of vaccine effectiveness comes from first dose, but only after a few weeks for the body to produce significant quantities of antibody.
1 million doses should have a 4% effect on cases, if all other things are equal. That’s not that much. And that’s only 2-3 weeks after the shot.
Still, as immunity takes hold, it should have an outsized effect on deaths, since early vaccination is clustered in the vulnerable population. 2 of my 5 living senior relatives have completed their dosage, one has had the first shot, and my mom gets her first tomorrow. A month from now our family’s death risk will have plummeted.
