Question of the day

Posted in:

* Via the Progressive Grocer, here’s a recent Numerator online survey

Consumers who don’t plan to get the vaccine were twice as likely to say that they’re ready to celebrate holidays on a larger scale, and 57% said that they’re ready to celebrate holidays normally. In contrast, fully vaccinated consumers are the most cautious group, with 36% saying that they’ll ease back into normal celebrations, and 16% planning to stick to small-scale celebrations for the foreseeable future, even after restrictions are lifted.

* Chart

* The Question: Using the list above, what is the first holiday that you expect will be (or already was) “normal” for you and yours? Explain. Also, let us know your vaccination status.

  2. True, but let’s stick to the question.

  3. 4th of July, only with small family. No plans for indoor dining yet. Both fully vaccinated.

Comment by Stix Hix Monday, May 10, 21 @ 2:51 pm

  4. My family and I are now fully vaccinated, but probably won’t do anything large until Thanksgiving or Christmas. My son is immunocompromised and I’d like to see if the vaccine produces a helpful level of antibodies for him before we starting having any large scale celebrations.

Comment by Phil Monday, May 10, 21 @ 2:53 pm

  5. $th here too, but just with immediate family who are all vaccinated. No big crowds (which I already started to stay away from the last four or five years) anytime in the foreseeable future.

Comment by JS Mill Monday, May 10, 21 @ 2:58 pm

  6. Seeing as Memorial Day & Fathers Day are already typically small for us, 4th of July. We’ve got a larger-scale family celebration we are planning on attending later in the summer.

Comment by Peanut Gallery Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:00 pm

  7. vaccinated. 4th of July will be close to normal with friends and family, but hitting the concert scene…hoping for summer fun…. I will be masked.

Comment by Amalia Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:01 pm

  8. Memorial Day. Household is all fully vaccinated and half of it is back traveling for work.

But half the family tree was back to normal by last summer. I just avoided large indoor events with them (but I was usually avoiding larger family events way before Covid tbh).

Comment by ChicagoBars Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:03 pm

  9. The 4th of July, in my backyard. We’ll all be fully vaccinated by then, as am I.

Comment by Wensicia Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:07 pm

  10. Thanksgiving, but that is really only because it is the first holiday on the list where we do anything big.

    Comment by ;) Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:08 pm

  11. Vaccinated.

Maybe 4th of July depending on a lot of specifics. Other family functions will be attended with a lot of trepidation as extended family members have refused vaccines due to handful of conspiracy theories and some family members are likely to make a show of ignoring any effort to meet safely.

Normal won’t be back until after 2022.

Comment by Candy Dogood Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:09 pm

  12. Easter was the first holiday missed in 2020 and the first one that was back to normal in 2021. My parents were fully vaccinated at that point, as were all my siblings (except me, I had my first shot a week and a half before). It has been pretty much been 2019 business as usual since then (but with masks on in public, of course).

Comment by Ducky LaMoore Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:10 pm

  13. Cinco de Mayo. At home. Small invited group all adult. Fully vaccinated. No one who was invited declined. Started out on the deck and moved inside to eat as temp cooled. It was wonderful.

Comment by Responsa Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:12 pm

  14. Memorial Day with eight family members from three states but all are fully vaccinated.

Comment by don the legend Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:13 pm

  15. We’ve already been having some family get togethers, as we are lucky enough to have everyone of age vaccinated. If I had to peg it to a holiday, I suppose it would be Memorial Day, but that’s generally pretty low-key.

It will take (quite?) a bit longer to feel comfortable eating and drinking among strangers indoors. Family/friend gatherings where I know others’ status is much higher on my list of acceptable risk than visiting restaurants.

Comment by Cassie Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:16 pm

  16. 4th of July, mainly because we can be ‘normal’ outside. We’ll keep it small though (no fireworks shows) for the foreseeable future. Whole family is fully vaccinated.

    Comment by Leslie K Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:16 pm

  17. I have been fully vaccinated for a while and celebrated Mother’s Day with fully vaccinated family members and household members who very recently got their second shots. Went to restaurants in the last few weeks and followed guidelines. According to studies so far, the vaccines offer very good protection.

But there’s no way I’m going into crowds and indoor settings with mass gatherings where restrictions are not followed.

Comment by Grandson of Man Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:18 pm

  18. Fully vaccinated. I expect Christmas to be normal (kids coming home on airplanes, shopping in stores — with masks - and getting together with friends in small to medium indoor groups.) We’ll see

Comment by Soccermom Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:19 pm

  19. I had 10 members of my family at my place yesterday…
When I control the “venue” I have no worries…

Comment by Loop Lady Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:19 pm

  20. I’ll be two shots plus two weeks tomorrow, but my answer is maybe never.

My family has 1) young children who cannot be vaccinated, and 2) people who’s doctors say they cannot be safely vaccinated.

So barring some big change, either continuing to do what were doing now is our new normal or we’ll never be normal again.

    Comment by @misterjayem Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:22 pm

  21. Just did Mother’s Day in a very small group, all vaccinated. We’ll be good to go for more by Thanksgiving, I hope.

Comment by walker Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:34 pm

  22. 4th of July but it will be a little smaller than normal. We’re vaccinated but both of our kids are under 12 and not eligible for the vaccines. Given the entire lack of understanding of how this operates in children and what, if any, lasting effects might be, I’m just not willing to jeopardize my kids’ long-term health so we can have a party. It will be families we’ve podded with mostly.

Normal doesn’t come for us until the kids are protected too

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:40 pm

  23. The whole family is fully vaccinated, and the 4th will be the first “normal” holiday. Most activities will be outdoors. Memorial Day is never a big deal in my family because the weather is so unpredictable.

Comment by Bourbon Street Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:40 pm

  24. Fully vaccinated, 4th of July. We are going to visit family we haven’t seen in two years that weekend.

    Comment by wildcat12 Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:43 pm

  25. Vaccinated - Planning a wedding with 150 people later this summer.

Comment by Chicagonk Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:45 pm

  26. Fully vaccinated and looking forward to 2022. Until then a gradual return to holiday normalcy with others who are vaccinated.

Comment by SSL Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:53 pm

  27. July 4, but it will be family only (3 generations, under 20 people), almost entirely outside, and fireworks will be watched from a boat. I’m fully vaccinated.

Comment by RIJ Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:53 pm

  28. Mother’s Day - but just immediate family: both of us plus sons & daughters-in-law. The 6 of us (minus the babies) are fully vaccinated.
We’re hoping to include close friends to celebrate the 4th of July. -hoping-

Comment by Diogenes in DuPage Monday, May 10, 21 @ 3:54 pm

  29. Vaxed, Mother’s Day. It was great.

Comment by Chicago Cynic Monday, May 10, 21 @ 4:02 pm

  30. Memorial day, not vaccinated, Wife is, son and daughter in law both have had it.

we are largely back to normal and plan on getting together with friends and family some vaxed some not.

Comment by Todd Monday, May 10, 21 @ 4:03 pm

  31. My family got together for Mother’s Day. Everyone there is fully vaccinated except for the grandkids, but felt safe enough since all adults are vaxxed. First time in a year. Felt great.

Comment by Bruce( no not him) Monday, May 10, 21 @ 4:15 pm

  32. Fully Vaxed at the end of the month, really looking forward to outdoor concerts again, with lots of people. Summer Camp in August, cant wait.

Comment by BluegrassBoy Monday, May 10, 21 @ 4:18 pm

  33. Fully vaccinated. Attending a wedding in the city next weekend. Required to submit proof of both vaccines, although it’s only as good as the paper it’s printed on. Already had Covid so I’m full of the antibodies. I just hope others are honest about it.

Comment by Joe Schmoe Monday, May 10, 21 @ 4:18 pm

  34. Fully vaccinated.

Won’t be eating inside a restaurant until winter at the earliest and will probably never go to a large concert or sporting event again. Not interested in being around strangers any more than is necessary.

Comment by Larry Bowa Jr. Monday, May 10, 21 @ 4:50 pm

  35. Not big on large gatherings even pre-pandemic. Labor Day is the earliest I see “normal.”

May have small family gatherings before then with vaccinated people.

Comment by Last Bull Moose Monday, May 10, 21 @ 5:10 pm

  36. Will be fully vaccinated in the whole family by July 4, so celebrations will be normal with small family group. Doubtful for anything more like concerts or travel until we see how things are going, maybe fall.

Comment by Jibba Monday, May 10, 21 @ 5:15 pm

  37. Fully vaxed. Probably 4th of July - my friends are not “vaccine hesitant” and by then hopeful that new cases will be at historic low levels.

Comment by lake county democrat Monday, May 10, 21 @ 5:18 pm

  38. Mid June… so July 4th

By that time all who will be attending, including myself, will be fully vaccinated.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, May 10, 21 @ 5:21 pm

  39. Fully vaccinated.
Can’t see returning to normal until next year.
Hoping for a 4th of July dock “party” of maybe one other fully vaccinated couple……….which I do not consider even close to normal. Waiting for all the shoes to drop.
Maybe 2 two other couples by New Year’s.

    Comment by TinyDancer(FKASue) Monday, May 10, 21 @ 5:41 pm

  40. memorial day family reunion. everyone is vaccinated. We’re still renting a tent and getting together only outside.

Comment by park Monday, May 10, 21 @ 6:22 pm

  41. 4th of July. Already have travel plans for an extended visit with family in Omaha and barbecues, fireworks, dining and several family birthday parties. School will be out, my wife and I are vaccinated and the kids won’t have to miss school due to a trip to a (COVID) red state.

We’ve been playing it safe because of our school situation, but once summer break begins, we’re ready to get back to normal for a couple of months. Travel, pool time, camp for the kids, lake trip to MN, lots of things we’ve put off for a year. Looking forward to it.

    Comment by 47th Ward Monday, May 10, 21 @ 6:40 pm

  42. It is not a holiday, but Super Bowl Sunday we were with a large group None of us were vaccinated at the time, so I wasn’t thrilled with the idea.

Going forward, I’m not limiting behavior at all related to Covid other than wearing a mask when required.

I’m fully vaccinated. My wife is not, but I’m trying to get her to do so ASAP.

Comment by Crash Monday, May 10, 21 @ 6:44 pm

  43. Vaccinated. Mother’s Day was normal in that I ate dinner with my mom. The next hurdle is large gathering indoors. I am hopeful that will come soon, but folks do need to get vaccinated more for that to happen.

Comment by Three Dimensional Checkers Monday, May 10, 21 @ 7:12 pm

  44. We will be having the annual black raspberry picking and ice cream making party for the grandkids. Somewhere around the 4th of July. All vaccinated and ready to go.

Comment by Reelpro Monday, May 10, 21 @ 8:39 pm

  45. ===How’s the basement? Fully vaxxed people still hiding away? Huh????===

Just this past weekend I was talking to a friend who has a parent that has cancer. The friend is vaccinated.

For the safety of the parent, they are still very leery and cautious.

Your lack of compassion for others is compelling.

Comment by Oswego Willy Monday, May 10, 21 @ 9:33 pm

  46. I have celebrated with my families on both sides, albeit small scale.

    Fully vaccinated.

Comment by Justin Tuesday, May 11, 21 @ 3:01 am

  47. Vacation scheduled for July. As of yesterday, the entire family is vaxxed up. Need some away time as we had no vacation last year. Travel is good for the soul.

Comment by Jake From Elwood Tuesday, May 11, 21 @ 3:07 pm

  48. I was vaccinated in February & second shot in march.

Mom got both shots in April.

One of my brothers has his first shot.

Got together for my birthday with Mom, two brothers, one sister, and most of their families. Total of 11 people.

Expect to do the same for Memorial Day and 4th of July.
