Musical interlude: Safety Dance

* We talked about this yesterday…

I firmly believe in following the science and will revise my executive orders in line with @CDCgov guidelines lifting additional mitigations for vaccinated people.

The scientists’ message is clear: if you are vaccinated, you can safely do much more. #VaxUpIL #allinillinois https://t.co/grWJQCn9SV

  1. Of all the songs in the ’80’s.

I try to tell my kids how great that decade was for music, pop culture in general.

    Then this song comes on.

  2. Not in Springfield city limits, however. Mayor Langfelder said the city will be keeping the mask mandate and enforcement, even for the fully vaxxed, until at least the end of May. I also don’t see anything changing regarding Mask mandates in open state buildings either. Which is fine by me.

That would be awful. I hate the fact that every year (well, except last year) the park gets trashed and off-limits to those of us who actually live here.

I believe the science. Alas, it’s what the past 14 months has taught me about my fellow humans that gives me pause.

  7. I am interested to see how this will impact the behavior of COVIDIOTS and if we’ll see that in the over all numbers of cases as they may have been making decisions about wearing masks in public in order to comply with requests made by businesses instead of trying to make it an issue.

I hope that we’re near the end of it, but we should all at least mentally prepare ourselves for another wave this fall or winter.

  11. As outside of the box as this maybe, if I were Pritzker’s team I’d start running ads that don’t sugar coat what happened at LaSalle and then end with him accepting responsibility for the failings and then a second set of ads highlighting what steps he’s taking to make it better. The bus is going to hit him… does he want to be the one driving it or allow his opponent to be the one doing. Also don’t drag out settlement talks with the families, get it done quickly.

  13. Given the state of openness I’ve been seeing the last couple of weeks, I think people will continue to ignore Langfelder. Some places will continue to enforce masks, others won’t.

  16. Rich, no, just observations. But I’ve ate out one or more times every day for the past two weeks, and done more in store shopping than normal, so I do have a small sample of firsthand observations.

  18. Mayor Langfelder called in to Sam Madonia’s show this morning and said he would follow the Governor’s lead as he revises his executive order on masks, etc. Allowing that individual businesses may retain mask requirements.

  19. =Fully Vaccinated People Can Stop Wearing Masks=

And how, exactly, do they differentiate the vaccinated from the unvaccinated since they all look the same?
If the unvaccinated unmask, the virus might spread among them, mutate, and possibly infect the vaccinated.
    This is just dumb.

    Comment by TinyDancer(FKASue) Friday, May 14, 21 @ 10:40 am

  20. I wondered about how we tell which of the unmasked people are actually fully vaxxed as well. Are we going to be carding everyone, and is that legal?

  22. TinyDancer,

The variant risk is aggravated at the global level, not really our local level of anti-social anti-vaccine folk. What you need to get an escape variant is lots of infections. Which IL conditions are showing not much of. I’m going to figure that the anti-vaxx lot and the anti-mask lot overlap each other a lot on the venn diagram. And that many of those folks carry some immunity from having had the virus. So allowing everyone to not wear masks might tick up the infection rate a little but I’m guessing not a lot. The big thing the CDC now knows is the vaccinated aren’t going to make non-vaccinated people sick. That’s huge.

But run away infections in Brazil, India, Nepal, Iran… can and have caused variants. Because of the sheer number of transmissions.

  25. For the needing lots of infections to get a sustainable variant of interest I would choose this one: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/31/health/coronavirus-variant-transmission.html it explains that: “Each infected person is a crucible, offering opportunities for the virus to mutate as it multiplies.” it also explains how some mutations actually hurt the virus ability to infect. So by multiplying the numbers of people infected you multiply the change that the virus can mutate in a worrying way.

For my comment about anti-mask anti-vax these two pictures are gold: fask mask map https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/07/17/upshot/coronavirus-face-mask-map.html

Covid, but a fascinating thing is that I see crazy right wing sites quoting Robert Kennedy Jr. sites and guests.

If the Russians wanted to throw doubt on the mRNA vaccines though, they would use right wing channels since they are able to more easily infiltrate there (the left is more ideologically dissimilar with in it right now).

Sorry - my question was specifically referring to this statement:

“The variant risk is aggravated at the global level…What you need to get an escape variant is lots of infections.”

The only relevant line I could find in the N.Y. Times link was:

“Each infected person is a crucible, offering opportunities for the virus to mutate as it multiplies,” which suggests that every transmission risks generating a mutation.
