I still don’t know how “gender-bending, death-zombie fungus” isn’t the pull quote here.

What’s on your brain today?

  1. Hopefully the squirrels will have their bellies so full of cicadas that they leave my tomatoes alone.

Comment by Blue Dog Tuesday, May 18, 21 @ 3:41 am

  2. Deer in the garden is the trouble here. The squirrels won’t leave the house and other things alone, though.

    Think sunny thoughts.

  3. Sox continue to win despite a rash of injuries to key players. If we can get some of those guys back before the end of the season this could be our year.

Comment by Stones Tuesday, May 18, 21 @ 8:25 am

  4. DL, we’ve got deer in the cemeteries up here. The current theory is they’re walking from the north shore along commuter train right of ways. No one knows why though.

    Comment by Cheryl44 Tuesday, May 18, 21 @ 9:08 am

  5. The squirrels don’t bother my tomatoes, it’s those d&#n chipmunks that chow down on mine.

Comment by Steve Rogers Tuesday, May 18, 21 @ 9:11 am

  6. ==DL, we’ve got deer in the cemeteries up here. ==

Not sure which cemeteries you’re referring to, but Rosehill has permanent residents, and they’ll occasionally go strolling through the surrounding neighborhoods

  7. Now I’m disappointed that this area isn’t getting the Brood X cicadas. Guess I gotta go on a road trip.

Comment by Bruce( no not him) Tuesday, May 18, 21 @ 9:47 am

  8. Madrigal and Mercedes each just a triple away from the cycle last night. Sox crushing Minnesota is so heartwarming.

Comment by Amalia Tuesday, May 18, 21 @ 9:51 am

  9. The Sox are a joy to watch so far this season. When Madrigal and Mendick both hit home runs, you know they are on a roll.

  10. === Sox crushing Minnesota is so heartwarming===

It’s all I care about this year.

Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, May 18, 21 @ 10:05 am

  11. I’ve given up trying to grow tomatoes or other produce, thanks to all the rats in the neighborhood. They take one or two bites then spit it out. Anyone know how to keep rats away other than cats or traps?

Comment by BigLou Tuesday, May 18, 21 @ 10:22 am

  12. “Death Zombie Fungus” would be a cool band name.

Comment by The Ford Lawyer Tuesday, May 18, 21 @ 10:25 am

  13. Joe, Rosehill and St Boniface. There’s also chickens in St Boniface, but those are probably escapees from people’s backyards.

    Comment by Cheryl44 Tuesday, May 18, 21 @ 10:26 am

  14. There’s a whole family of deer in Waldheim Cemetery in Forest Park. Including one with only 1 antler (left side if I recall). I feel there’s a story to that circumstance (or maybe he just shed one before the other).

  15. Was Mercedes HR last night wrong?

  16. Wonder if there will be any fireworks at the Senate Education Committee hearing at 1:00 today. House Bill 234 is scheduled to heard. This is a Media Literacy bill requiring high schools to teach students about making good choices for information in our world of the web and dubious resources. Other states that recently passed similar bills had Republican lawmakers accusing Democrats of trying to manipulate students, engaging in cancel culture etc. Sen. Bailey is a member of this committee.

  17. A federal issue that brings Illinois into a battle. Guess it happens at all levels.

Bill Introduced to Designate Illinois Wilderness
    by Utah Legislators

The decades long, and often antagonistic, battle over Utah’s red rocks is rearing its head again. Sen. Mitt Romney, R-UT, and Rep. John Curtis, R-UT, introduced legislation Thursday to designate 289,000 acres of land in Illinois as federally protected wilderness.

It’s an attempt to troll Sen. Dick Durbin, D-IL, who introduced America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act Monday that would designate 8.4 million acres in Utah as federally-protected wilderness areas. Democrats have run some version of Durbin’s bill for 30 years, and this is at least the third time Utah Republicans have introduced a retaliatory bill.

  18. ” how to keep rats away other than cats or traps?” Certain dog breeds make excellent rat hunters as well. Rat Terriers is the obvious one, but there are others.

  19. ==introduced legislation Thursday to designate 289,000 acres of land in Illinois as federally protected wilderness.==

Where in Illinois does this mass wilderness exist? I don’t think Midewin prairie preserve even approaches 289k acres. Is this the 100 miles or so of Prairie Preserve that there’s a sign for on I-55 near the Atlanta exit? Running from basically all of Logan, Sangamon, and Macoupin and Montgomery counties along 55?

  20. “Was Mercedes HR last night wrong?”

I just heard Tony calling Mercedes out. What a joke of a manager. I don’t care what the score is, players should be giving 100% every moment. If you don’t want a guy to hit the ball, then don’t throw a hittable pitch. Fire Tony now, please. He is going to be a huge distraction to a winning team.
